Can't find it in the DT. Has anyone the ABC or dots of "Erin's Shore"? Recently re-heard it on an album by "The Corrs" and I would like to play it on my Mandola. Thanks Bev Lawton

There is also Erin's Green Shore which usually starts...

One evening of late as I rambled by the banks of a clear pearling stream
I sat down on a bank of primroses and I quickly fell into a dream

All the best, Dan

Hi,

If it's the one that the Corrs use to start "Forgiven not Forgotten" and as the last instrumental on the CD.. it is "Paddy's green Shamrock shore".

Isn't the one you posted Dan, sung to the tune of "Roisin the Beau"?

Thanks Alison that's the one. Heard years ago and my daughter gave me "Forgiven not Forgotten" for my birthday. It's one of those tunes I've "known" for years but until recently I only played rythem to Irish tunes (Guitar or Bohdran) I now have a tenor mandola and I'm getting into melodies! This is one of those tunes I can only describe as "majestic" if you know what I mean. Bev

Very good, alison. I'm glad Bev got her song. I don't have the Corrs recording and obviously you do.

I have Erin's Green Shore on a 19th century broadside I copied at the British Museum years ago. I've heard it sung twice. Once was an American version by Hedy West of Georgia and I heard the other 2 years ago in Inishowen. Hedy sang it to a unique melody that was a major/minor combination. The Irish version was in major but not to Rosin The Beau as I recall... which doesn't mean that others don't sing it to that melody.

There is an older and fuller version of Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore sung around Inishowen. It's sung in a particularly nice major melody and has a lot of local references. Here's a sample from memory...

From Scene to scene my fond eye roved over mountain, hill and dale
Till resting on dear Walworth grove o'ertopped by Drumnameal.
Greencastle's ancient church and fort made my sad heart sore
Thinking on when Tyrconnell's court did grace the Shamrock Shore.

There is a version of this in the Sam Henry collection.

All the best,
Dan

Judging by some of the recent mail I've been getting I reckon I had better "come out". Not that I'm upset or anything but the last time I looked "Bev Lawton" was DEFINETLY a big hairy bloke!!! I would also like to put it on record (for the zillioneth time in 43 years) that us blokes had the name Beverley first - it means "from the Beaver meadow" Ley being old English for a Water Meadow. Guess this means I'll have to post a picture now - does it have to include a musical instrument? or can I use one of me striking heroic (MANLY!)poses on mountain tops? Bev 'The Bloke' Lawton!

hahahahaha

Sorry Bev, I confess I thought you were a girl. i saw the Corrs in Sydney lst year.. they were great..... and when they swapped from pop to traditional music they were mindblowing.... unfortunately the majority of the audience was there for the pop stuff, so they didn't do much trad.

Dan, do you know any of the other verses?

Ok, Bev. Have it your way.

Hi alison! I put this set of words together from a few different sources. We'll probably put this on the next CD. Once again, the melody is a very nice major one.

From Londonderry we set sail, it was on the eighth day of May
Twixt 9 and 10 the next morning, we arrived at Moville Bay
Fresh water there we took 20 tons for passengers in store
Lest we might run short, going to New York, far away the Shamrock Shore.

At 6 o'clock that evening our anchor we did weigh.
The sunbeams on Benevenagh rocks they splendidly did play.
Greencastle's ancient church and fort they made my sad heart sore
Thinking of when Tyrconnell's court did grace the Shamrock Shore.

From scene to scene my fond eye roved over mountain, hill and dale.
Till resting on dear Walworth grove o'ertopped by Drumnameal.
My agonizing heart did swell, my soul was troubled sore
Viewing those scenes I left behind upon the Shamrock Shore

At 12 o'clock we came in sight of famous Malin Head
Innistrahull far to the right rose out of the ocean's bed
A grander sight now met my eyes than e'er I saw before
The sun going down 'twixt sea and sky far from the Shamrock Shore.

Next morning we were all seasick, not one of us was free.
Quite helpless in my bunk I lay with no one to pity poor me.
No friends were near, but strangers drear, to lift my head when 'twas sore.
None of my own to hear my moan far from the Shamrock Shore

We landed on the other side in 3 and 30 days
And drinking our parting glass, we took our several ways.
We took each comrade by the hand, perhaps to meet no more
And thought on all our absent friends around the Shamrock Shore.

All the best to you both,
Dan

Thanks Dan,

all of those place names bring back very happy memories. I lived up in that part of the country for the last few years I was at home. Used to take my dog for walks on the top of Binevenagh, he used to swim in the lake at the top of the cliffs. Admittedly he did get confused the day we trudged up there, knee deep in snow, and he couldn't swim because the lake was frozen solid........

Thanks again for a lovely song...

Alison I would like the dots if you have them. for some reason I can't find this fairly common tune anywhere else. ABC format by preference but anything else will do. Many Thanks.
