Does anybody have any experience with seagull guitars? Would anyone recomend them or not recomend them? As always, help is appreciated. I've recenty been seduced into almost purchasing one, and am wondering whether I should yield to my desires.

Tradsteve,

We did a little guitar review a year or so ago. CLICK HERE to get the one on Seagulls. You have to wade through several posts of BS (including my own), but you will get some strong opinions.

I don't know what you are looking for in a guitar. Price and quality do not always go hand-in-hand. The general concensus is you get your money's worth with Seagull.

Finally, play the guitar you are thinking about buying. Take a buddy along and have him or her play it some (so you can listen out front). There is variablity within models for all brands, more in some than in others. I say, buy what you like and you can afford.

Good luck on resisting the urge to spend money on music. If you get more than three guitars you become a collector.

Yeah, check out what we babbled on about on that thread..but...even though most are pretty good, Peter T. brought his to one of his lessons, wondering why he couldn't tune it. Half an hour later we discovered it was mis-fretted. The POPE wouldn't be able to tune it! He left it with me, and downstairs it sits, unplayable except as a slide guitar (which he doesn't do yet)

Hi hi,
Well, even Martin has bad days, ya know.
Fact is, Seagull is one of the cheaper line of solid wood guitars from the Lasido Company in Quebec, Canada. (for those who didn't know). They also make Normand, Simon and Patrick, and Godin. I think Tradition might be theirs as well, but I'm not 100 percent sure without going to the website.
Simon and Patrick are generally quite lovely sounding solid wood acoustics, and the Godins are tres cool solid and hollow body electrics. Traditions are cheapoid.
I find Seagull necks a little clunky, and I prefer a glossy finish, but for the money, at least in Canada, it's hard to get a better sounding new guitar. The tops are solid wood, they put sealed tuners on them, the glueing is fairly good, and the finishing is good.
This is, of course, subjective, and slightly nationalistic, but my opinion is that you could do worse.
The smaller body "folk style" is pretty comfy for someone my size (compact) to play, and it's got a nice, funky, woodsy, chunky, sound to it.
Then again, go find one and play it. Try different models, since they make them with cedar, maple, apruce, and birch.
There.
I'm done.
For now.
Cheers and bananas
Owl/Mart

I have a Seagull 6 string. I have had it for 10 years or so, and I must tell you that it plays very nicely, has a lovely tone, and was a real value for the money. The finish has aged in a way that gives it a lot of character. I have been more than satisfied.

Peter T. and Rick,

My experience with La Si Do has been that they will stand by their product 100% when it is a manufacturing problem. Obviously misplaced frets is a manufacturing problem. Mine was way outside the warranty period, like 6 years outside of it, when a glue problem became apparent. Even though they were under no obligation to do so, they paid Elderly to do the repairs. I should think they would make some kind of adjustment on Peter's guitar.

All the best,

Mick

SEAGULL PLAYERS!!! YAAAA!! I was thinking I was the only one!! I've got 2.. An S6 from about 15 years ago, abck before the LaSiDo days even I think... Plays great, looks way cool with the colour of the finish now dark and the scratches and the dings in it lighter... The only problem is that it needs a fret job so bad it hurts... Been playing it alot lately capo'd up to the 5th... LOL!!

The 2nd is a cut away model with an L.R. baggs pickup in it... it lives in DADGAD and sounds fantastic when plugged it... The body is slimmer, so it doesn't have BIG balls when accoustic, but I rarely play accoustic anywhere outside my living room...

After the St. Pats Day winfall, I'll be retiring the old S6 and picking up one of the "Folk" models with L.R. Baggs guts...

Love Seagull... The necks are quick, the tones are rich, the headstocks look a little, ummm, "Calista Flockhart", but I never really cared how it looked, as long as it plays nice...

And affordable! HELL!!

;-)

(I aughta get paid for this! LOL!!)

I tried three Seagulls in a local shop. A 12 string, a 6 string cutaway and an S6 folk with L.R.Baggs pickup. All the necks were slightly different, so it pays to try a few if you get the chance.

I fell in love with the small-bodied folk guitar. Nice tone, looks beautiful and plays really well. Sounds nice through a PA, too. The matt lacquer finish is already picking up a shine on the back of the instrument after 12 months, and it won't offer any protection against dings and scratches. On the other hand, it won't kill the guitar's tone either!

In the price range, I honestly couldn't find anything new to touch it.

Thanks for all the help everybody. I tried out the "Folk" model at the store and loved it, that's why I started the thread. There was nothing else that really touched it. Right now I own an Epiphone Hummingbird and a Washburn D10 and the folk model sounded a lot warmer than my Epi. I think I just may make a purchase! Thanks! -Steve-

I have a SeaGull and though I am hardly an expert, I have friends who are, and they feel it is a good guitar with a beautiful tone and it's pretty too. One friend couldn't believe what it cost and went out and bought a bunch to sell in his store in Maine. They have a real good sound.

IMHO, Love, annap

I'm very happy with my Seagull S6 cutaway that I bought last summer. It has a Baggs pick-up, and works well whether plugged in or not. I find the pick-up a tad too sensitive, but with a cover over the sound hole, no problems with feed backs.

It has a very nice, rich sound, and is not easily drowned at sessions or in other noicy places. I also find it easy on my fingers, but then again, I've been playing a twelve-string for the last 15 years!

Price-wise (at least here in Norway), I think you'd have to look long to fnd a better guitar for the same price.

I recently bought a Simon & Patrick spruce-top cutaway elec/acoustic. My brother has had a Seagull for some years. They're both excellent value/quality for money.

For the whole story, go to on your browser. You can read about Godin electrics and Seagull acoustics.

The company, founded by Patrick Godin, also makes S&P, Norman (dearer), Art & Lutherie (cheaper) and La Patrie (classical). S&P apparently are sons of Patrick. Their site is . Cheers!

I'd like to put a word in for Norman guitars, also made by Lasido. They never seem to get a mention. I have a folk-style B20 which to my ears sounds better than many guitars at twice the price and is ideal for finger picking.

Rick. That sounds like it is the dealer's fault as well as Lasido. Didn't they set it up? They must have noticed the defect then.

Anyway, if you do contact Seagull, please report what they do.

What's the scoop with those little "Grand" Seagulls?

I went to the music store in Sydney, Nova Scotia hoping to find a folk-size Seagull to try out, but all they had was the Grand kind (very small bodied).

I liked its sound and feel, but before I go back for another look I want to know: why is it so small? Is it supposed to be for children, or for hiking trips? Are there styles of playing it's supposed to be particularly suited or unsuited to? For anyone who's tried one, do you think it's as good as the dreadnought size or folk size for sound?

Last but not least: will people make fun of me if I show up with a tiny little guitar? And if it's made in Quebec, don't LaSiDo know that grand means big?

Any thoughts on Seagull's "kid brother" guitars marketed under the name, "Art & Lutherie?" Thanks.

I used to have a Seagull. It was the only new guitar I have ever bought. At the time I was planning on spending $700 or $800 on a moderately nice guitar. The $200 Seagull (this was a long time ago, they're now around $400) sounded and played better than the low end Martins and Guilds I was looking at.

Art and Lutherie guitars are also made by LaSiDo (along with Norman, Seagull, Simon and Patrick, and more) and is their very inexpensive, all laminate guitar. I borrowed one to take on vacation with me last year and was very impressed. For a $200 guitar, it played and sounded quite nice. Better than any other manufacturer's guitars I've played on that costs three times as much. If you like the dreadnought style, the Simon and Patrick is very good. They make some models that are just like the Seagull, but with the different body shape. They also make some solid wood ones with a gloss finish that are more expensive.

I have a 12 string seagull which I was actively encouraged to buy by my partner (this from some one surrounded by some sixty asstd instruments)this sort of encouragement is rare ( didn't work when I looked at a 5 string banjo tho)back to the seagull- the action is brilliant, lighter even than my Fylde 6 string easy to fingerpick nice tone. I would recommend Seagull, in fact I guess I am doing. With the proviso already mentioned by other writers - play it yourself before parting with money, even Martins have produced the odd nail.

Thanks for the link Jon. I was also hoping to hear someone's non-commercial assessment of the Grand.

Also, how do the Simon & Patrick guitars compare in price and quality to the Seagulls? It's strange that the LaSiDo website only talks about Seagulls and Godins.
