Subject: Lyr Add: ISLIP (parody of KILKELLY)
From: GUEST, Anon strikes again.
Date: 16 Mar 00 - 09:08 AM

Firstly, I had to do it. The risk of a song being parodied is directly proportional to the emotional seriousness of the original. It's why we make jokes about death, injury, and in-laws.

Secondly, I don't think anybody's ever gonna sing it, but it might be amusing to see once.
-------------------------------------------------

ISLIP, LONG ISLAND

Islip Long Island, 19 and 60. My dear loving daughter Estelle:
I hope that this small, insignificant letter finds you happy and well.
I hope San Francisco is all that you dreamed of, although it's a long way from here.
I hope that you watch out for bad boys and beatniks. There's a lot in this world you should fear.
Your brother's moved close to his girlfriend, so he says, but I fear they are living in sin.
Please don't concern yourself. I'm doing splendid but I can't wait to see you again.

Islip Long Island, 19 and 70. My dear loving daughter Estelle:
Say hi to Moondog. He looks like a nice boy, but with all that hair I can't tell.
Does his mother know that he has hair like a hippy? I hope you have checked him for lice.
Oh well, never mind. I'm just being a mother. I'm sure that he's really quite nice.
And the wife of your brother, I don't think she likes me. She wants him to move to Bayonne.
Your room is exactly the same way you left it. Anytime you want, you could move home.

Islip, Long Island, 19 and 80. Dear daughter Estelle and son John:
I'm sorry to give you the very sad news that your father, that bastard, is gone.
He moved out last weekend to live with some floozy. She's skinny and has curly blond hair.
I'm a shame he decided to trade you poor mother for a pretty young head filled with air.
But please, not to worry. I'm sure I'll recover. At least that's what my doctor has said,
But I hope you're still planning to move back to Islip Before your dear mother is dead.

Islip, Long Island, 19 and 90. My dear loving daughter Estelle:
I'll be fifty-one this coming Sunday and my colon is giving me hell.
I just mentioned my birthday in case you'd forgotten. I know you're too busy to call.
Thanks for the pictures. It's the only reason I know what the kids look like at all.
Except for the clothes from the Salvation Army, they're lovely young women and men.
Are you thinking you might bring them here for a visit? It would be nice to see you again.

Islip, Long Island, 19 and 92. This is your dear brother John.
I'm sorry that I didn't write sooner to tell you that mother has moved on.
She was living with some guy she met in college. I think he is just thirty three.
She sold the house and closed all the accounts and they're off on a traveling spree.
And she sent us a letter from a country in Europe, and some photos they took on a cruise.
If you ask me, she has lost it completely and the young man's affection's a ruse.
And it's funny the way she kept talking about you. She said something to you at the end.
She said, "Tell Estelle you get one chance at life. Maybe someday I'll see her again."^^

Dear Anon,

It's fun.

Of all the threads on Mudcat, this is the one that I knew I had to print off immediately and show my wife.

And I expect we'll probably sing it through, once.

It's not a dumb parody, it's wonderful. And actually moving, if I may be so bold as to say so. Thanks for doing it. And it will be sung...by me, for one, at next week's Singtime Frolics in Oregon.

Uhm, Jeri, one quibble. I thought I'd make 51 into 61 at least, since otherwise

1990
- 51
______
1939 DOB
and if she gets married at 16, that makes it
+16
------
1955
and that will give her a daughter leaving home for the wilds of SF in 1960 at the age of 5.
Sixty-one works about right, tho maybe not for doing the continent with a 33yr old student. At least she dies happy, right?
Blessings,
Barbara

Thanks for the compliments. Please print, sing, and share. And Alison - I'm imagining you, a woman raised in Ireland, living in Oz, doing a Long Island accent...

Cheers!

Jeri. Great parody! I've recorded Kilkelly, and sing it in shows, and I'd love to start doing this one. I do parodies of Country Roads, and the Streets of London, and as I get older I find myself losing track of whether I'm singing the original or the parody, and once or twice I've jumped back and forth between them until the "Huh?" from the audience brought me back to where I was supposed to be. All the best. Seamus

I actually don't write much - usually just one-verse sillty things like:

For two years now I've tried to grow a lawn that's lush and green
But though I tried, my grass just died 'till only sand was seen
But there's something new this year to view, if you know what I mean
Oh the crabgrass looks like hell, but it's growing

Parodies are wonderfully valuable for giving us glimpses into ourselves and the culture. This one's a GEM, Jeri!
Hey Barbara, are you thinking what I'm thinking that this would be a great addition to the San Francisco Folk Music Club's newsletter song page?
Jeri, do you want to have it submitted?

I gave it to Faith for Sing Out, Ray, and shipped it to both you and Kay, I thought, back in March. Kay liked it but said that the tune was not familiar enough, so we needed to run it too. One of you said that we probably couldn't get permission to run the tune to Killkelly. Does any of this sound familiar?
What's the name of that herb that helps with memory?
I think Jeri's parody would be great on the song pages.
Blessings,
Barbara

Well, I finally have my fifteen minutes of fame. MaryMac reported last night on Mudcat Radio that the song is in the current issue of SingOut!

Interesting - someone on a newsgroup I read pointed out that the tune to Kilkelly (at least I may be spelling it right now!) is virtually the same as Old Maui, done in 3/4 time.

Charlie - when did you see my lawn!?! I wish there were a lush, flowering variety of crabgrass.

I ought to go over to the songwriting thread. This was just going to be a silly song with not much of a point. The last verse sort of wrote itself. Said "Hey, I'm turning out just as sad as the original. Poor old lady, all by herself...DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!"

He and I will be at the press room tomorrow night. Email me if you don't get your own copy of Sing Out! and I'll pick one up at Bookland for you.

Obligatory shout... CHARLIE! JOIN UP!

And Roll & Go is looking for someone with a great voice, commitment and who should probably be committed. I think, Jeri, you would qualify for some of that.

You are right, Jeri, it was a good session. Too bad you had to leave early. And about your comment last night that you only know three songs. You are hereby assigned a task to learn a fourth song for next session! And another song for the next session etc. Now, I don't make it every Friday so you can cheat and only learn a song for those sessions that I will attend but you'll never know which ones those are will you? Thus, you'll have to keep learning. *BG*

For those 'catters who don't know, Jeri has a strong clear voice that is just right for unaccompanied singing. We need to help her learn more songs and even find someone to play along with her so we can hear what she sounds like with an accompanist. I believe she'll be great there too. Any volunteers?

Thanks Brett. I feel like crap today, but I'm glad I went. Sometimes they have accompanied me - usually on acapella songs. ;-) I know more than 3 songs, but either they're not suitable for a session or I'm in danger of killing them with over-singing. Maybe I ought to start a thread asking for suggestions...

Hey, Jeri, it was such fun to see your name in Singout! I haven't had much time for Mudcatting so I missed this thread- both times!
Another song you've shared, but didn't write, is Martha Stewart Doesn't Live Here. I've been having some fun with that one.

Hey, my Sing Out! didn't arrive until today. I have to say I was duly impressed to see that Faith put TWO Mudcatter songs in her column. Steve Suffet is relatively new here, but if you click on his name, you can see he's made a significant contribution to the information posted at the 'Cat. His song in Sing Out! is an inspiring variation of "Wasn't That a Time."
