Subject: Lyrics: Corrina, Corrina From: hartley Date: 30 Jun 97 - 02:23 PM Haven't found any lyrics in DT for this song. I have several versions, but am looking for additional verses. I have version by B. Dylan and S. Hopkins. Any suggestions of web sites? |
Subject: RE: Lyrics: Corrina, Corrina From: Mountain Dog Date: 30 Jun 97 - 04:48 PM Dear Hartley, Taj Mahal does a great version (lots of syncopation) on his album "Recycling the Blues and Other Related Stuff" from Columbia Records, 1972. You can find a complete discography of Taj's work at the following website: http://www.taj-mo-roots.com (...and for another COMPLETELY different take on Corrina, you could also check out the version by Steppenwolf on "Steppenwolf Live", a double album from 1970 (don't recall the label). This is Heavy metal meets the Mississippi Delta; not recommended for the blues purist. I recall my grandfather hearing that album and asking if it might happen to be titled "Train Wreck on the Mississippi"?) |

The arrangement by Bruce Langhorne is very different and Steve and Cindy's vocals and string work is simply beautiful. CORINNA, CORINNA Corinna, Corinna, gal where you been so long? Subject: Lyr Add: CORRINA, CORRINA^^ From: Barbara Date: 20 Jul 00 - 03:18 AM M'self, I like Michael Cooney's version, which I think derives from Hudie Ledbetter's, and includes verses like:
Weepin' willow, and the mournin' dove
Sometimes I think, babe, you're too sweet to die.
I'll chop your wood babe, I'll even tan yo' hide
Goin' down to the river, gonna set down on a log
Is this the same song y'all are talking about? I think it's called "Corinna" or "Sweet Corrina".

Subject: RE: Lyrics: Corrina, Corrina From: Peace Date: 07 Apr 05 - 12:50 AM Yo, Cruiser. I remember that song vividly. Melody is great and so was the 45. The melody was very different compared to Dylan's version of the song (for example). Thanks for posting the lyrics. I recall the tune and likely the chords, but many of the words had slipped into the tunnel of time and were filtering away. Bruce M "I pray at night she'd like to love me too" I remember this as being "I pray every night, she'll learn to love me too". Is that my memory doin' its thang? BM |

Subject: RE: Lyrics: Corrina, Corrina From: Cruiser Date: 07 Apr 05 - 11:23 AM Stewie: Thanks for the link to the most extensive treatise on the song I have seen (and have searched for). For those that have not read this article, I suggest that you do so. brucie: I think you may be correct about the verse you mentioned. I will dig out my 45 rpm or CD and check the lyrics. However, at our ages, we are likely to have misremembered the words, right OLD buddy? Cruiser |
Subject: RE: Lyrics: Corrina, Corrina From: Peace Date: 07 Apr 05 - 11:35 AM LOL Thanks for bringing back that memory. Named my daughter after that song (and no, her name is Corrina, NOT Corrina, Corrina). Thought I'd better make that clear considering the roll yer on. LOL Bruce |
Subject: RE: Lyrics: Corrina, Corrina From: Cruiser Date: 07 Apr 05 - 11:58 AM brucie: you are right about the one verse! I am listening to the song now and it is: "And I pray every night she'll learn to love me too" There is another small correction to the lyrics I copied and pasted above: "I left Corinna way ON across the sea, oh me" I should know better than to copy/paste lyrics from the Web without checking them out! The song I am listening to is from the CD: Good Old Rock & Roll, Vol 1. 28 Great Hits, Original Artists Hyland Music, 1987. This is one of my favorite albums with Jimmy Clanton, Carl Dobkins Jr, Jack Scott, The Impalas, Dobie Gray, Billy Joe Royal, et al. brucie: if I had a daughter I would have named her Corinna. Subject: RE: Lyrics: Corrina, Corrina From: Cruiser Date: 07 Apr 05 - 09:36 PM Now for the origins of the song; here are similar quotes from 2 different web pages: {Quote} Corinna, Corinna" was an old Scottish folk song that had been adapted as "Corine, Corinna" by Red Nichols and his jazz band, and later by Joe Turner, who had a Top 2 rhythm and blues record with it in 1956. Corinna, Corinna" is actually an old song. It first charted in 1931 as "Corinne Corinna" by the Red Nichols Jazz Band, and rode to #2 on the R&B charts in 1956 as recorded by Big Joe Turner. {End Quote} An old Scottish folk song? Now if Masato and/or Q could do some in-depth research to help sort this out. Bruce: No charge. I could never repay you for the laughs and music info you have provided on Mudcat. How neat it is for others to appreciate the same music and have similar musical memories of Oldies and Folk songs. Cruiser |
Subject: RE: Lyrics: Corrina, Corrina From: Cruiser Date: 07 Apr 05 - 09:43 PM A small excerpt from the link Stewie provided: {Quote} The substantive focus of my talk today is a song, the venerable Corrine Corrina. First recorded in 1928 by the Mississippi-born guitarist and singer Bo Chatmon (a.k.a. Bo Carter), Corrina is a blues, in the well-known 12-bar, AAB-texted form. It is also an 'old-timey' country song, with roots in the southern 'common stock' tradition (Russell 1970:28); and a pop tune, carefully crafted to appeal to a extensive and heterogeneous audience. Chatmon's recording was subsequently 'covered' by musicians working in a great variety of genres and stylistic contexts, including Red Nichols, Art Tatum, Muddy Waters, Albert Ammons, Mississippi John Hurt, Jimmy Witherspoon, Bob Wills, Merle Haggard, Floyd Cramer, Freddy Fender, Asleep at the Wheel, the Texas Wanderers and the Tennessee Drifters, cajun music pioneer Leo Soileau, Big Joe Turner, Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Phil Spector, Bobby Vinton, Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal, and (my favorite musical trio) Steppenwolf, Lawrence Welk, and George Winston. My lecture today intercepts the song's complex 70-year trajectory from several angles. In the first part of the talk I locate Bo Chatmon's 1928 recording of Corinne Corinna within a broader musical and social terrain, and attempt to account for the marginal status to which both the song and the musicians who performed it have been relegated in subsequent journalistic and academic writing about American music. In the second half, I present a series of analytical 'snapshots' of subsequent recordings (or 'cover versions') of Corrina, in an attempt to highlight the song's complex and shifting relationship to evolving discourses of racial difference, identity, and commensurability. {End Quote} Cruiser |
Subject: RE: Lyrics: Corrina, Corrina From: Chris in Wheaton Date: 08 Apr 05 - 11:30 AM There is a great version by the 70's band, Redhead. It has a great, understated break by Jethroe Burns. Sure wish Mike Dunbar would re-release it. He also did my favorite version of the Dutchman on that record. Google on Mike and ask him to re-lease it! When I sing the song - I changed the words in the 80's to "...... don't get no letters, not a fax to me....." Any ideas on how to update it? Chris in Wheaton |
