Subject: ADD: Casabianca/boy stood on the burning deck ^^
From: wildlone
Date: 16 Sep 00 - 05:15 PM

We have all heard the various verses of this, how many know the true story of:

CASABIANCA
(Felicia Hemans)

The boy stood on the burning deck
  Whence all but he had fled;
The flame that lit the battle's wreck
Shone round him o'er the dead.

Yet beautiful and bright he stood,
  As born to rule the storm;
A creature of heroic blood,
  A proud, though child-like form.

The flames rolled on -- he would not go
  Without his Father's word;
That father, faint in death below,
  His voice no longer heard.

He called aloud -- 'say, Father, say
If yet my task is done?'
He knew not that the chieftain lay
  Unconscious of his son.

'Speak, father!' once again he cried,
'If I may yet be gone!'
And but the booming shots replied,
And fast the flames rolled on.

Upon his brow he felt their breath,
  And in his waving hair,
And looked from that lone post of death
  In still yet brave despair.

And shouted but once more aloud,
  'My father! must I stay?'
While o'er him fast, through sail and shroud,
  The wreathing fires made way.

They wrapt the ship in splendour wild,
They caught the flag on high,
And streamed above the gallant child,
  Like banners in the sky.

There came a burst of thunder sound --
The boy -- oh! where was he?
Ask of the winds that far around
With fragments strewed the sea! --

With mast, and helm, and pennon fair,
That well had borne their part --
But the noblest thing which perished there
  Was that young faithful heart.

FELICIA HEMANS (1793-1835)

[Young Casabianca, a boy about thirteen years old, son of the Admiral of l'Orient flagship of the French fleet,(in the Battle of the Nile) remained at his post after the ship had taken fire and all the guns had been abandoned, and perished in the explosion of the vessel, when the flames had reached the powder.]

And, of course, there's the parody of this, which I only vaguely remember, but it went something like:

The boy stood on the burning deck
Whence all but he had fled
Shouting out the battle-cry of freedom
And when his feet were burned away he stood upon his head
Shouting out the battle-cry of freedom
So hurrah for Mary
And hurrah for the lamb
And hurrah for the little boy who didn't give a [chord]

The boy stood on the burning deck
He must have been quite silly.
A spark went up his trouser leg
And burned his little knee.

The boy stood on the burning deck
His feet were full of blisters
He tore his trousers on a nail
And now he wears his sister's.

I believe my posting of this earlier this week inspired this thread. I learned the parody from my father before I was ever exposed to the poem in school. Sorry, if I offended you, Wildlone.

SINSULL, no I am not offended, I am a re-enactor of the life and times of the British Army in the peninsular campiagn and your post struck a chord that it was a real event that was turned into the poem. A search later I turned up this so I thought I would share it.

He dare not move a single inch till bummer Jake had past. etc etc

Is anyone else familiar with a poem (I think it was written by Elizabeth Browning) that has the same first line? It is about the boy, and love... also contains the line, which might be paraphrased, "loves the ____, and (something else) and love's the burning boy."

It's driving me crazy.

Yeah, but it's Elizabeth Bishop.

Casabianca

Love's the boy stood on the burning deck
trying to recite "The boy stood on
the burning deck." Love's the son
stood stammering elocution
while the poor ship in flames went down.

Love's the obstinate boy, the ship,
even the swimming sailors, who
would like a schoolroom platform, too,
or an excuse to stay
on deck. And love's the burning boy.

-Elizabeth Bishop, 1946

The boy stood on the burning deck
When all but he had fled.
A seagull laid a hard-boiled egg
And dropped it on his head.

This was one verse of a comic song on some ancient 3/8ths inch thick Edison records my grandparents had with a wonderful, huge (about 3 foot by two by two, on two-foot legs) phonograph.

Oh the boy stood on the burning deck
His feet were burnt to blisters
The flames reached up and burnt his pants
So now he wears his sister's

Oh it ain't gonna rain no more
It ain't gonna rain no more
So how in the heck will I wash my neck
If it ain't gonna rain no more.

Talking of noses, does anyone remember the monologue the Victor Borge used to do about his conk?

Did 'e 'eck.

The boy stood on the burning deck
his feet were full of blisters

The boy stood on the burning deck,
His heart was a all a-twitter,
He stood 'till he could stand no more,
And became a crispy critter.

His heroic ashes blown about,
His shipmates all in gloom,
Hailed his courage, one and all,
'Ere breaking out the broom.

And now, collected, in the pan,
Now committed to the jar,
They placed him on the mantle high,
Inside of Paddy's bar.

And, now and then, when back on shore,
They raise their glasses high,
And 'toast' the lad above the fire,
Sayin' "better him than I!"

and shouted give me half a peck
and he drunk till he was fu'

And by the time that he lay drunk
the good ship sank and then it sunk
But he climbed up an elephants trunk
and whistled for the crew

And then there was an awful thud
that froze each sailors noble blood
for someone threw a rotten spud
and knocked off the captains wig

The captain in a rage he flew
blew up the ship and sacked the crew

I looked this string up since my mum(90) remembers some of the verse and wants to find the full version.

The boy stood on the burning deck,
He stood upon his head,
Because his arms and legs were off,
So he waved his arms and said.......(or possibly "instead"....)

She then has forgotten the rest but knows it was a parody of many poems. It apparently ends
"For I'm to be Queen of the May, mother, I'm to be Queen of the May."

She thinks the "Village Blacksmith, a mighty man was he" appears in it it as well.

Any offers?

I remember this from a book my father had (about 60 years ago):

The boy stood on the burning deck,
He stood upon his head,
Because his arms and legs were off,
He waved his hands and said,

My name is Norval
On the Grampian hills the village smithy stands,
The smith a mighty man
Was wrecked on the pitiless Goodwin sands,

And by him sported on the green,
His little grandchild Wilhemene,

And we rushed to the signal rockets,
Lets fire them quick we cried,

And the good Abbot of Atherbrethock
Plunged headlong into the tide.

Now who will stand on either hand and guard the bridge with me,
Aboard the schooner Hesperus that sails the wintry sea,

I and two more to help me,
Will keep the foe in play,

For I'm to be Queen of May mother,
I'm to be Queen of May.

Has anyone read the entire poem by Felicia Hemans (1827)?

Worthy of ridicule. Worthy of Jessie Pope too.

My father's version...

The boy stood on the burning deck,
The lifeboat honked it's horn,
But alas the poor boy could not move,
For the fire had popped his corns.

He was a captain in the merchant marines during WW2

The boy stood on the burning deck,
Waving to passing ducks.
"I wish I'd joined the RAF
This being a sailor sucks!"

The boy stood on the burning deck
Selling peas a penny a peck
Did he wash his dirty neck?
No did he heck.

Anyone else heard this version:

The boy stood on the burning deck
Shelling red-hot peas.
One fell down his trouser leg
And paralysed his knees

The boy stood on the burning deck,
He stood upon his head,
Because his arms and legs were off,
“It’s rather hot”, he said.

The boy stood on the railroad track,
The train approaching fast --
The boy stepped off the railroad track
And let the train go past

----

The boy stood on the burning deck,
His ass toward the mast,
And vowed he wouldn't budge an inch
Till Oscar Wilde has passed.
