Happy Birthday, Sandy!

I haven't forgotten about those Southern-style beans, either. You and Caroline come and get them anytime. Well, maybe I COULD bring a crockpot to the next Getaway.... Was that WITH fatback, or WITHOUT?

With best wishes for many more celebrations,

Thanks, youngsters! That's WITH, Dani. They ain't southern without the fat. Karen, I bet you'd even like brocolli, if Dani fixed it like southern green beans get fixed.

Where is Kansas, Lin? Y'know I used to live in Salina? Worked the harvest from Larned up to Russell and Hayes. First guy I ever met who played guitar was a harvest stiff from Henrietta, Oklahoma, with whom I worked and sang.

You kids do realize, don'tcha, that folks my age try to FORGET birthdays, rather than remember 'em, but I truly do appreciate your kind words. Y'all shoulda heard the musical greeting left on our answering machine while we were out playing taxi driver for a grandchild. Rick even got Heather ("Duckboots") to sing along. Top forty potential! Give Maggie a hug for me, Animaterra.

It's mutual, Karen, from me and from Caroline. Never forget that. See you soon?

Stay well, good people, and warm.

Sandy

Sandy,

It is simple. I goes like this. I love you. In a very short time you have become one of the most important people in my life. I love the life you have lived and still live every day, I love the person you are, I love what you do for others, I love the friends you keep (are you listening KarenK, Kath, Rick, et al, I love what you have done for our music, and I damn sure love with all my heart the woman you had the good sense to marry. When I speak with people about this legacy that we keep and carry on, it is with every bit of pride that I am allowed to possess that I tell people that you and Caroline are my friends.

Now bring on the chicken fried steak and let's get this party on the road.

Mick

Well damn......Here I am late as usual. 'Course I notice its not THE day yet so at least I ain't a day late and a dollar short........uh, check that......I mean like I'm always a dollar short!

I'd like to say that you're not getting older, you're getting better, but the plus side is that I can't imagine you gettin' much better....... so that leaves the down side as bein' that you're just gettin' older! This is goin' pretty bad so far ain't it? Geeziz......lemmee see here................

They say though that old wine just gets better with age and that's true unless its been mishandled and had to go through the everyday cycles of things in which case it may have gone flat and turned bitter. You have faced the best and worst of all that life has given you and now like that mishandled wine.................. well hell, this still ain't workin' out!.............wait a minute....wait a minute.......I got it now.................

Sandy, on this special day I want you to look back over all the people you've touched with the blessings of folk music and the freedom of thought that comes from the mingling of the old and the new; to see how far things have come in folk and the arts as well. Now you can look forward to the continued growth of the arts, of folk, and of that freedom which...................aw damn.......I forgot........ We got at least 4 years of the friggin' "shrub" who'd like to put freedom in a cod-lock..........'course on the other hand, it might help folk music a bit..................Well anyway this ain't what I wanted to say either.....................

I guess the real problem here is that the wonderful karen k. has summed it up beautifully in the first post and I can't think of a way it could have been better said:

Sandy, my wish for you is that you have a great day and many, many more years to come. I wish you good health, good friends, great family and thank you for recording and sharing the most amazing music...................She done good didn't she?

Happy Birthday Sandy.....and a hug for Caroline too.

All The Best

Spaw

Sandy, dear --
Echoing what Karen, Spaw, Mick, Rick, and others have said so well, Happy, happy birthday to someone who has made -- and continues to make -- a world of difference in this girl's life and in the world at large. Personally, I'm glad you and Caroline rescued me from the Calvinists, introduced me to the big bad world of folk music, and offered your friendship and a place in your wonderful circle of friends. The world at large is a better place because you work so hard to make the music we love accessible to everybody (not only through Folk-Legacy, but in your performances), go out of your way to be friendly and inclusive with strangers and beginners, care about social justice, and generally live what you believe. You have my thanks, my admiration, and especially my love. Happy Birthday to You! Kathy

Sandy, do you remember what you and Caroline sang at Fox Hollow the day after Nixon resigned? It was "Only Remembered For What They Have Done." This applies to you and yours as a compliment and a blessing. May you continue to have that happy combination of patience and enthusiasm as you generously share your knowledge and wisdom with both scholarship and entertainment to all. A little verbose, I know, but I wanted to get all the elements in. See you next June at Old Songs. Love, Mary

Whoops, I'm a day late too.. Sandy, seeing you and Caroline perform at Getaway was a rare and fine thing. Seeing your birthday here brought to mind something a friend shared with us several years ago regarding numerology (Okay, it actually took a day to find the book and blow the dust off...) 22 is a master number and indicates a departure from the average mode of human existance. Those who can meet the high frequency of 22 can demonstrate baffling artistic and mental productivity...They are visionary and dreamers and think up big deeds ...they produce beauty inspirationally...expanded into a univeral scope of love for mankind...Sandy thank you for the lives you have touched.

Dear Sandy,

I haven't had a chance to check in for a couple of days, so I missed the birthday party! But it got me to reminiscing. . . .

Weel do I mind in the days of lang syne (Seattle, late summer or early fall of 1954, if my memory serves me) a big party and songfest at the old store-front down on Brooklyn Avenue. I had just traded in my $9.95 plywood guitar on a new Martin 00-18, my first really nice guitar, and this was the first party I took it to. The occasion (as if we needed an "occasion" to get together and sing) was that you were about to return to the East by means of thumb.

The singing was fantastic that night! And then came the sermon.

As a child, Donnie Logsden (at the time, the pearl-diver at The Chalet restaurant, itself the scene of many a song-fest) had been a street-corner preacher. He had long since been defrocked, but he still remembered how to do it. Concerned about your rather slim state of finances for the trip, he delivered an impassioned twenty-minute sermon (so impassioned that he could barely squeak at the end) and passed a collection plate. I remember you, sitting there with your face in your hands, shaking your head. But we couldn't send our brother minstrel out into the world without at least a little traveling money.

You've traveled far and accomplished much since those lean but glorious days!

How far that little candle throws his beams! - William Shakespeare

Happy Birthday, Sandy!

Don Firth

Made it all the way to the Big Apple without having to stop along the way for some pearl diving of my own, too, Don, thanks to the generosity of my considerate friends! Got a ride just east of Spokane with an engineer from Anaconda Copper who wanted to get plastered. First he asked if I had a gun in the guitar case (I didn't -- it was a guitar!). Then he asked if I had a driver's license (I did, Ohio, from my earlier stay in Toledo). Then I took the wheel and we stopped at every bar between Spokane and Butte, Montana, where I poured him into the arms of his loving wife at his own front door. In every bar, he wanted to buy me a drink,. I reminded him that I was driving, so settled on buying me a hamburger. I kept smiling, strumming and singing, and stuffing the burgers into my pack. Ate the damn things all the way to New York!

Amazing how you manage to bring back memories for me, Don. I hadn't thought about that particular trip for years!

Thanks again, folks, for all the good wishes and kind words. I finally told Caroline about this thread, and now she wants me to read it to her. I'm thoroughly embarrassed!

Sandy (the old solivagant)

As they say in the Rugger tradition:

Why was he born so beautiful? ....

Hell, Burl, most of this stuff could have been written by Lie-Hue, if he could write, which is doubtful. He was known to stretch things a bit, you know.

Hurrying to get my Happy Birthday in before the door closes. Not been checking threads lately. Hope it was a great Day with many more to follow.

All the memoirs made me a bit nostalgic. All the songs, the Dictionary games, the Thanksgivings, the good times and old friends. We go back a way.

Much love to you, and hugs for Caroline, too. Joan

This is yet another thread I'm gonna keep on a floppy so when the computer melts down (or California takes all the electricity) I can put a stylus (needle)into the tone arm of a wind-up player and hear all these wondrous sentiments and stuff I never knew before. This is a grand site in a fantastic world---and I say that with all that the root word "fantasy" can conjur up in our mind's eyes and ears too.

Thanks to you for all of it, old friend--on this, your 72nd---am I right ?

Love,

Art
