TIME HAS MADE A CHANGE

Cho.
Time has made a change (4 times)
Since I bin born.

Songs we used to sing we don't sing no more,
Songs we used to sing we don't sing no more,
Songs we used to sing, Lordy, we don't sing no more,
Time has made a change since I bin born.
Cho.
Prayer we used to pray we don't pray no more, (repeat)
Prayer we used to pray, Lordy, we don't pray no more.
Time has made a change since I bin born.

Sung by Alfred "Helena" Hamilton, aka Ernest Buggs, Arkansas State Prison Farm # 9. John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip.

Time has made a change in the old oak tree,
time has made a change in the things I see,
time has made a change and I must agree,
time has made a change in me.

That's a distorted version of a fragment of a song that Princess Dinizulu (Maglan) used to sing before she went back to Saint Helena. Can anyone remember the proper words?

Thanks Sorcha. These are certainly the words I've heard David Jones and Johnny Collins sing.

I think you're right. The subconscious does funny things, dunnit? That's the heart of the folk process, failing memory.

Was Freye the composer of the song in the DT? When was it composed?

The above now indexed in the African-American Spirituals Permathread. If more lyrics (with titles other than the above) are added in this thread, please help us index them by posting the song title and thread URL to the Permathread. Thanks.
