Subject: RE: Lyr Req: ...the green grass grew all around From: Abby Sale Date: 12 Jan 02 - 12:09 PM This is a very important and notably pagan religious song. Generally the American versions either drop the final circlular verses (per MMario) or drop them and continue the song to the absurd length per Mrrzy. Point is that originally it reflected the life cycle and was called (and often still called in the UK) "The Everlasting Circle." Jewish and Christian thinking is cyclical, yes, but not circular. That is, Birth/Marriage/Procreation/Death but not Rebirth. We prefer a hierarchical concept, overall. That is, leading from the smallest up to God. This song in America goes to the smallest but that's a detail. Thus, the "EC" ends And from that feather was made a bed And on that bed there lay a maid. And to that maid there came a youth And from that youth there came a seed And from that seed there grew a tree Circular, ye see. I keep posting Circular Song requests. True ones are quite rare but I've built up a short list of them. And a few circular dialogues (Eg "You remind me of a man" from The Batchelor and the Bobbysoxer a favorite movie of mine.) Wait a mo' The Utah Phillips radio show is supposed to be being stream-rebroadcast on KGNU right NOW! Where'd it go? I want my Utah Phillips! |
