Subject: Song Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 03 Mar 02 - 11:57 AM Following the success of the "non-Dilbert" workout, I thought there might be room for a short quiz. Please think before posting answers, give others thinking time. You can PM me if you're stuck and want a quick(er) answer, or post to the list to claim 50% or 75% success (or100%). or to say which questions are really bugging you. But Please don't give it all away too soon. Dependant upon response, I will either post the full answers in 2-3 days, or (if people are still trying) will post the names of the performing acts. Most of these should be known on both sides of the big pond, but I am writing from Wales. (Now, hoping i've got these line breaks right) All questions have been set as descriptions, rather than questions. At my local club someone got 17/20 in half an hour. I may occasionally take liberties with spellings! *G*
1, The day before this. Enjoy!

Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: DMcG Date: 03 Mar 02 - 12:03 PM How about 10 in 2 minutes? Of Course, the other 10 will take a lifetime. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Paul from Hull Date: 03 Mar 02 - 01:01 PM Hmmmm....didnt do as well as DMcG....either in time or in answers |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: The Pooka Date: 03 Mar 02 - 01:15 PM Only 8 or so right away; bah. Many, I get the phrase or idea but not sure of the song. This is hard. Good game. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Sorcha Date: 03 Mar 02 - 01:27 PM I think I've got half of them; not sure about 5 and 14. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Paul from Hull Date: 03 Mar 02 - 01:36 PM Ah, I got those..or THINK I did. Think what colour EMERALD actually is.... & 14 is just a maths problem, unless you just make a guess like I did... *S* |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Mickey191 Date: 03 Mar 02 - 01:37 PM Got 9 in a minute. Sorcha, 5 is the easiest one there. This is fun! |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Mickey191 Date: 03 Mar 02 - 01:39 PM What's the punishment if you don't do well? |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Sorcha Date: 03 Mar 02 - 01:39 PM About 5--are we talking an opening, or a round "port"? |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Mickey191 Date: 03 Mar 02 - 01:43 PM An Opening to a ----- |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: DMcG Date: 03 Mar 02 - 01:46 PM 5 is one of those I didn't get. Or rather, I'm pretty sure I know the answer - I'm just not sure if its a song! |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Sorcha Date: 03 Mar 02 - 01:50 PM With Kate's help, we now have 14, maybe. 11 I'm sure of. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: KT Date: 03 Mar 02 - 02:14 PM Twelve for sure.....guessing at a couple others....I have to admit, I had to use a dictionery on #3.......
|
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 03 Mar 02 - 02:30 PM No 3 Requests the result, so not Orbison's or Aerosmiths, or Don McLean's or Vixen's Just in case it was too easy ! |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Jeri Date: 03 Mar 02 - 02:41 PM Got 14 in about 10 minutes. Of course some of them are wild guesses. (Probably means they're more likely to be right than the ones I'm sure of.) |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: KT Date: 03 Mar 02 - 02:45 PM Oops! I should have used the dictionary on dictionery!
|
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 03 Mar 02 - 02:55 PM Further: no 3 has 3 possible correct answers (all very similar, but different titles) 19: I have been given a second valid answer to as well. 9: This is not a song from Les Mis. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 03 Mar 02 - 03:49 PM No.3 seems to be self perpetuating, in the frustration it is causing. 3 Possible one word answers, all similar, Anyone remember Ken Dodd ? Womack & Womack ? Shakin' Stevens ? Frankie Knuckles ? |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Jeri Date: 03 Mar 02 - 04:50 PM DMcG, I'll bet you got #5. I seem to remember a fairly early rock song. And a movie. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Sorcha Date: 03 Mar 02 - 05:22 PM OK, I am NOT going to get 4,6,7,12,15,16,and 20. You win, Nigel. Fun game. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: alison Date: 03 Mar 02 - 07:13 PM 12 1st tiem through... fun slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Jeri Date: 03 Mar 02 - 07:13 PM Sorcha, you're missing nearly the same ones as I am, I'm sure you can get 15 and 19 though. 15: Ignore "Cindy" (It may be a UK thing and doesn't make sense to other folks) and think "Barbie." As for 19, I'm not sure how to hint without giving it away, and it's Nigel's job anyway I'm still sure you CAN get it. Oh jeez - I think I may have just figured out #16. Sometimes all it takes is getting half of the answer, and the rest fills itself in. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Sorcha Date: 03 Mar 02 - 07:20 PM I got 19 (2 correct answers for that one) and doh! 20 hit me like a brick a while ago....... |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Jeri Date: 03 Mar 02 - 07:25 PM What's frustrating is thinking you've got one and subsequent hints prove you're wrong. My #3 (I had the Orbison one) and #9 got shot down a while ago. I have a replacement #9, but I'm giving up on #3. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: alison Date: 03 Mar 02 - 07:26 PM anyone got 6,7, 11,18 or 19? slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Sorcha Date: 03 Mar 02 - 07:28 PM Yes, alison. I have 11,18 (I think) and 19. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Jeri Date: 03 Mar 02 - 07:32 PM Good one Sorcha - didn't know any of those bricks were loose! Alison, I think I have 11 and 18. There's a high liklihood I'm wrong on 11, though. If it involves knowing about what the song's actually about, it may turn out to be a difficult one. Fine one it is, though! |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 03 Mar 02 - 07:35 PM responding to posts, without "giving it all away" (Gilbert o'Sullivan title) 15: Satchmo, or Sinatra 16: this is one of the ones requiring a misspelling, Clue: Hymn "Feed me now and evermore" 19: Jacko ('83) or Devo ('80) Thanks to everyone for following request not to give too much away, I'm up-to-date with all PMs as at midnight:34 having just got back from my drinking club. Where our usual Sunday evening included a 20 Question quiz. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 03 Mar 02 - 07:49 PM Number 11: the title does include one extra word, maybe the clue should be "An area of Liverpool, apparently somewhere to "pick your own" until Kingdom come" |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 03 Mar 02 - 08:18 PM jeri: you didn't get "shot down", I merely pointed out that your response was not the one I was looking for, and (possibly) it did not quite conform to the question. I am delighted at the amount of response already received. Once the answers are all available, I have no objections to anyone using this locally. If it's for a charity quiz, then so much the better. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Paul from Hull Date: 03 Mar 02 - 08:38 PM Ah, seems I was wrong with 3, if there is no Orbison connection! |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Paul from Hull Date: 03 Mar 02 - 08:44 PM Ah, I THINK I've got 3 now..... & THINK I've got 16 Still there are five of them I cant get though |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Jeri Date: 03 Mar 02 - 08:45 PM Nigel, I wasn't feeling like you shot me down. My airplane just sort of fell out of the sky. It wasn't a personal thing, and I've guessed on quite a few of them. I'll probably find I'm wrong on many. (But I really thought I had 11 and now I'm completely clueless...well, more like 'answerless'.) |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Metchosin Date: 04 Mar 02 - 12:17 AM Well, 4,6 and 16 are causing me problems and I think my answer to number 7 might be a bit of a stretch, I had to dig way, way back for that one. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Elf Date: 04 Mar 02 - 12:34 AM Well, after 20 minutes I've still got only 12 of 'em! |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 04 Mar 02 - 04:11 AM 4,6,7 & 16 causing problems ? 4, Manfred Mann No 1 hit 6, Best selling sheet music of all time 7, St. Cecilia hit, although apparently Tom Jones has requested this practice stop in recent years. 16, The mis-spelt Welsh valley may be distracting, but a very well known Beach Boys number. We're getting there (Slowly) |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Metchosin Date: 04 Mar 02 - 11:52 AM OK, I think I've got them all, but then again not necessarily exactly what you were looking for. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 04 Mar 02 - 01:44 PM Best attempt seen 18½ from "The Walrus at Work" |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 04 Mar 02 - 01:58 PM Metchosin also managed 18 / 18½ and was PMing me his answers while I was sending him the full list.
To speed things up: |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Metchosin Date: 04 Mar 02 - 02:11 PM You mean they don't throw their bras at Tom Jones, damn! I thought "June is Busting Out All Over" was a good shot. Oh well, close but no cigar. Great fun Nigel, thanks and BTW Metchosin is a she. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 05 Mar 02 - 11:52 AM Metchosin, That's the problem with obscure nicknames |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Metchosin Date: 05 Mar 02 - 01:31 PM Your right, unfortunately, my visit to Mudcat, was within the first week of me ever operating a computer or surfing the internet and I wasn't worldly wise at the time. Walrus seems to be the winner so far, as by my reckoning I only managed 17 correct answers, not 18, unless you consider the song I listed for number 3 as correct, it wasn't one on your list. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 06 Mar 02 - 05:24 AM Metchosin, hadn't thought of you answer to no 3, but it fits the requirements of the question! so it counts |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 06 Mar 02 - 06:29 AM To avoid spoiling the fun the answers have been posted to SQ2 |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Madam Gashee Date: 07 Mar 02 - 06:44 AM That was great fun! I'd never have got 4,7,13 0r 19! |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: vectis Date: 07 Mar 02 - 07:37 PM All of them in about five minutes. Mind you there were three of us (2 non-folkies) on a coffee break. Good fun, more please. |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 09 Mar 02 - 09:26 AM Because vectis asked!: Quiz 2 Instru--mental) is "threaded" @ Quiz 2 |
Subject: RE: Song Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Date: 09 Mar 02 - 09:28 AM Because vectis asked!: Quiz 2 Instru--mental) is "threaded" @ Quiz 2 Sorry, try again, I read an ampersand as an '8' in the thread ID |
