Subject: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Micca Date: 06 Aug 02 - 03:13 AM As you may know Joe will be in London from Monday 12 to Fri 15 August 2002, anyone up for a getogether to meet and welcome??? please PM or otherwise contact me, YES I know it is during the week and not easy to arrange, but if you can "come out to play" let me know and I will arrange something. |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Dave Bryant Date: 06 Aug 02 - 05:45 AM I could definitely be around on Friday evening, but Linda and I will probably be away for the earlier part of the week. I'd definitely like to meet Joe. |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: GUEST Date: 06 Aug 02 - 06:12 AM Why do you Londoners only have four days in work week? |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Micca Date: 06 Aug 02 - 06:30 AM Guest, Because Joe is arriving Monday lunch time and going North on Friday |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: kendall Date: 06 Aug 02 - 06:32 AM Oh, I thought maybe it was because there were so many people there, that there weren't enough days to go around. |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: manitas_at_work Date: 06 Aug 02 - 07:27 AM Micca, Don't forget to bring Joe down to the Old Black Bull in Stratford on Thursday night. It's a local session - only 10 minutes on the bus fom you - Joe will be most welcome and we might even let you sing! You know the pub, it's about 100 yards from the Old Town Hall in Stratford Broadway and used to be called Mulligan's. If you want to set up something for another night the Railway Hotel in Angel Lane would probably be willing to let you use the conservatory. Call Jan on 0208 534 3123. |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: dick greenhaus Date: 06 Aug 02 - 08:58 AM Kendall- It's just that Londoners have Imperial Days (like Imperial gallons) with an extra three hours in each of them them. |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 06 Aug 02 - 08:58 AM Micca, was the guest referring to your typo with the date? (Friday is 16th.) I have a meeting in London on Wednesday. If Joe is out and about that evening, that would suit me best. Otherwise I should be able to stay down there for a day or two, and maybe get to that bash in Stratford. Failing all that, could you enlarge on the "going north" bit? Will he be going anywhere near Sherwood Forest? |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: DougR Date: 06 Aug 02 - 12:15 PM Dick: That's funny. DougR |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Aug 02 - 12:43 PM Well, I'm game for singing any evening, although I suppose I might have jet lag Monday. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are open - I'll leave it to Micca to make arrangements. I'll spend the days wandering London, and then I head to the home of Bill Sables on Friday August 16. Oh, I need a bit of advice: When I'm waiting for a train, what can I do with my suitcase? I thought of traveling with a backpack, but that's a bit too Spartan for a 3-week trip for me. I'm leaving the home of Ian C on Friday, August 30, and staying my last night at Micca's. If I get into London and Micca's not there yet, would the train station or somewhere have a place where I can check my suitcase for a reasonable fee? By my last day, I'm hoping to have that suitcase full of songbooks I expect to find at ridiculously low prices.... -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: kendall Date: 06 Aug 02 - 12:48 PM I was told that Sherwood forest now consists of one tree. |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Micca Date: 06 Aug 02 - 12:55 PM Well, I was hoping to take you to "Sharps" Folk club on Tuesday, Joe and maybe try and meet anyone that is available on Wednesday about 8 p.m. at the Black Lion in Plaistow High St(its a short walk from Plaistow Tube on the District line) and the beer is good even if it is only us,and maybe Manitas might take you to the session on Thursday? |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Aug 02 - 12:57 PM Sounds great, Micca. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: DaveP Date: 06 Aug 02 - 01:01 PM While in London, Denmark Street (also known as Tin Pan Alley) is definately worth a visit. My personal favourite shop is Andy's where my son was allowed to try a vintage gibson gold top and I had the chance to try a rather old and excellent sounding Martin acoustic! (Acoustics on the first floor).

Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 06 Aug 02 - 02:06 PM Joe, the British Library is a two-minute walk from all three of the rail termini serving "the north" - ie Kings Cross, St Pancras and Euston. Why do you need to know this? Well if you get a reader's pass (usually a ten-minute wait; tell them you're researching something) , the music and rare books libraries are phenomenal resources. More important, the building has extensive and well-appointed "facilities" - including free luggage lockers. If you've bought loads of songbooks and need a really huge locker, go to the desk and they'll give you a key; otherwise help yourself to one of normal proportions, for which you'll need a (returnable) deposit coin. (20p or 1GBP I think.) I should be there to say hello, either Wednesday or Thursday. On a couple of occasions they let me leave stuff overnight, but I did ask first (I've got a reader's pass.) BTW there's a curious catholic church in Ogle St (St Charles Borromeo) if you get the time - still Neocatechumenate a year or two ago,in the face of much hostility from parts of the UK hierarchy. (Huge walk-in font etc.) St Ethelreda's (Ely Place) is the oldest, and survived the reformation because it was the private chapel of the Spanish ambassador. |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 06 Aug 02 - 02:10 PM Whoops - inserted the penultimate sentence above in the wrong place! Meant it to be at the end. (So I'm aiming to be at Plaistow or Stratford, not the British Library.) Oh, and you don't need to have a pass or anything to use the BL facilities. Not even to access their catalogues. Only to get into the libraries and get your hands on the books. |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Ed. Date: 06 Aug 02 - 03:57 PM If I get into London and Micca's not there yet, would the train station or somewhere have a place where I can check my suitcase for a reasonable fee? Mmmm, yes Joe! We are reasonably civilised and even have toilets in our stations! *grin* (We've not figured out how to run the trains too well yet, mind) Have a fab time, and be sure to spend at least half a day at the Vaughan Williams library. Ed |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Micca Date: 06 Aug 02 - 04:01 PM Ed, Cecil Sharp House is CLOSED for the whole of August usually!!! the Folk Club moves to its Summer quarters even, |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Fortunato Date: 06 Aug 02 - 04:11 PM Summer quarters even, what about odd? Nodding off again, are we, Micca? |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Noreen Date: 06 Aug 02 - 04:15 PM It was a fair question though, Ed- left luggage facilities at stations were withdrawn for a good while in some places because of the terrorist threat, and in some places haven't been reinstated. Have a good time Joe. |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Linda Kelly Date: 06 Aug 02 - 04:22 PM Have a great time with the gorgeous Micca, and brace yourself for the trip North to God's own country. Bear in mind that you come within breathing distance of the infamous Kingston upon Hull, and if you've seen some of the threads of late -you will know that that comes with a health warning. Hope to see you in Whitby week after next! |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Ed. Date: 06 Aug 02 - 04:54 PM Sorry for any offence. Was only meant to be a light-hearted comment...

Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 07 Aug 02 - 02:01 PM And in my opinion leaving luggage at the mainline stations is more than a reasonable fee. Even the loos (OK, restrooms) cost. Many mainline stations still don't have self-service lockers since the security clampdown, unless that's changed very recently. |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Susanne (skw) Date: 07 Aug 02 - 06:02 PM Safe journey, Joe, and enjoy yourself. How long are you staying in the North? Long enough to meet all the Mudcatters there, I hope! |

Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: pavane Date: 08 Aug 02 - 07:57 AM Manitas, I will try and get there. As we have an office celebration from 5pm, I will have to take the bus/train, but should be in a good mood! (I actually came from East Ham originally, so it is home territory. I can remember the trolley busses at Stratford, and there were still tram lines in the road) |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: manitas_at_work Date: 08 Aug 02 - 08:15 AM Pavane, What do you play? I wonder if we can arrange for you to borrow an instrument? |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 08 Aug 02 - 03:46 PM What sort of music is it at the Old Black Bull? Will you also be there the night Joe's thinking of being there - ie Thursday 15th? |

Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 13 Aug 02 - 05:24 PM They don't have any left-luggage lockers in the London terminals of the sort they have in other countries, allegedly because of the possibility of someone depositing a suitcase with a bomb in ot.
Instead they have Left Luggage offices, with a charge of £5 for every item. Why that is supposed to be in any way safer than coin-in-the-slot lockers is something I haven't been able to work out. They don't have any security procedures or anything like that, it's just done the same way it's been done since Victorian Days. There've been various detective stories over the years involving bodies being deposited in trunks. Maybe the £5 charge is supposed to stop that kind of thing happening...
The British Library sounds a great idea. |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Micca Date: 13 Aug 02 - 08:23 PM Here is the up to date news, Joe arrived on time on Monday and we spent the afternoon at Greenwich looking at the "Cutty Sark" ( the ship not the whiskey!!) today Tuesday, Joe had a day sightseeing in Central London and the evening at "Sharps" at its Summer home in the "Hemmingford Arms " pub, wher he sang some songs and listened to some more, we arrived home just after midnight, we will be in the Black Lion,(back bar next to the arch at the left hand end of the pub) at about 8 o clock tomorrow ,Wednesday August 14, as stated at the beginning of this thread. |
Subject: RE: BS: Joe Offer in London From: Liz the Squeak Date: 15 Aug 02 - 02:26 AM The Black Lion was a bit subdued on the song front, but very lively on the conversation side, and I just want to say here and now for the record that I think Joe is bloody GORGEOUS!!! LTS |

I'll certainly be back at the Old Black Bull (Stratford, London East) if only because it was about ten past midnight before we were politely ushered towards the street. Pubs with that kind of attitude to chucking out time deserve our patronage. (The session was enjoyable too.) |
