We had a kid song when I was a kid, and I think my parents had it too, of which the extent of my knowledge is

Oh I'd rather suck on a lemon drop
Than to try my luck with a lollipop,
'Cause I always drop my lollipop,
And it gets all over icky.

Oh it makes me sick how the way it smears
And it gets all over your hair and ears,
And I always drop my lollipop,
And it gets all over icky.

I've tried and tried, but never could find
A lollipop that's halfway refined,

So I'd rather, etc.

Google found it in a couple of places, but even less of it than I know, and no attribution. Does anybody know more about it?

I don't believe I have ever heard that one, but I once named a 60's band after what I found in a coat pocket--a year after I left it in said pocket! Give up?
    "Hairy Peppermint Candy!!"

This was a song from my mother's day. Until now, I am the only one who knew it that I knew of. My mother is still alive, if you have any specific question about it. You have one more verse than I did, I think.

Others she taught me include:
Today is the day they give babies away with half a pound of tea.
If you know any ladies who want any babies just send them up to me.

We sang the lollipop song over and over again in the back of the school bus, day after day after day in my foolish youth.

Mehitabel, This thread (click) has a great discussion on that song, including some wonderful information by our own Jean Ritchie (kytrad)!

Animaterra, thank you for that link. It would be here if it would be anywhere.

Back to the lollypop-I quizzed mom, she first heard it in perhaps junior high - 1920s or 30s in Tacoma, Washington. She only ever heard one verse. As I said, it was no longer around in my worldwide Army brat childhood. I found 10 good links on google, all of them say it is a camp song. I will put it here - the links I followed all included advertising.

Lollipop

Oh I'd rather suck on a lemon drop
then try my luck with a lollipop,
cause a lollipop I always drop
and it gets all over icky.

Oh it makes me sick the way it sticks
and gets all over my hair and ick,
with a jelly bean I'm always clean
with a lollipop all icky.

I've tried and tried, but still I can't find,
a lollipop *pop* thats half way refined.
So, I'd rather suck on a lemon drop
then try my luck with a lollipop
cause a lollipop I always drop
and it gets all over icky, icky, icky, icky, icky, BLAH!!!

The others are remarkably similar, one calls it a 1970s song, so in some areas it must still be common.

Subject: Lyr Add: WHEN YOU COME TO THE END OF A LOLLIPOP
From: Nigel Parsons

All I could think of was...

WHEN YOU COME TO THE END OF A LOLLIPOP
As recorded by Max Bygraves

When you come to the end of a lollipop,
To the end, to the end, of a lollipop,
When you come to the end of a lollipop,
Plop goes your heart!

Gilly Oh golly, Oh I love my lolly,
Oh, down to the very last lick,
But when you are through with it, what can you do with it?
All you have left is the stick.

When you come to the end of a lollipop,
To the end, to the end, of a lollipop,
When you come to the end of a lollipop,
Plop goes your heart!

Gilly Oh golly, Oh I love my lolly,
Oh, winter and summer and spring.
But when you are done it's about as much fun,
As a yoyo without any string.

When you come to the end of a lollipop,
To the end, to the end, of a lollipop,
When you come to the end of a lollipop,
Plop goes your heart!

Plop goes your heart!

Sang that song for many years at camp (although I never heard the "It makes me sick" verse) now I sing it at school along with Lollipop Tree, L-O-double L-I P-O-P, and a different version of When You Come To The End of A Lollipop. (That's why some of the kids refer to me as the "Singing Substitute")

When You come to the end of a lollipop,
There's nothing left to lick.
When you come to the end of a lollipop,
You sit all alone with a stick.
When you come to the end of a lollipop,
You stop.

"With a jelly bean I'm always clean" does ring a bell.

George Grandee apparently does the voice of Otto, the dummy, in the 1929 "The Great Gabbo". (Gabbo is a ventriloquist.)

Icky

L-O double L- I P-O-P spells lollipop
that's the only decent kind of candy
the man who made it must have been a dandy
L-O double L-I P-O-P you see
it's a lick on a stick
guaranteed to make you sick
a lollipop for me

I've tried and tried but never could find
a lollipop that was half way refined
so I'd rather suck on a lemon drop
than try my luck with a lollipop
I always drop my lollipop
and it gets all over icky, oo icky, oo icky icky icki

that's how my mom used to sing it to me in the 70s

The earliest record of the song is from the movie The Great Gabbo (1929)
