OK.

I have a clear recollection of hearing a version of the song TWO MAGICIANS, sung a capella, at the Feast at Renn Fayre in the early 80s (maybe 1984?). About the only thing that is clear, for various reasons.....

Lyrics were similar, though not identical, to those posted in the database for this song. Also included something about: "he became the cold cold clay and smothered her all around...."

Tune nothing like the database, which sounds like a dirge.

Anyway, any info about this song (or if you happened to have been there.... ) please let me know.

Kevin

PS: a street musician in Boulder also played me a version, quite like the one I recalled, in summer '96.

Kevin, If you're merely looking for another version, Steeleye Span does one on their "Now We Are Six" album. You mentioned the line--"he became the cold clay..." That's the version they use. The tempo and melody are rather more lively.

-Joe Offer-

Two Magicians

Maddy Prior: vocal;
Tim Hart: vocal;
Peter Knight: violin, vocal;
Robert Johnson: electric guitar;
Rick Kemp: bass and acoustic guitar;
Nigel Pegrum: drums

She looked out of the window as white as any milk
And he looked in at the window as black as any silk

Chorus:
Hello, hello, hello, hello you coal black smith
You have done me no harm
You never shall have my maidenhead
That I have kept so long
I'd rather die a maid
Ah, but then she said and be buried all in my grave
Than to have such a nasty, husky, dusky, fusky, musky
Coal black smith
A maiden I will die

Chorus

She became a duck, a duck all on the stream
And he became a water dog and fetched her back again

Chorus

She became a star, a star all in the night
And he became a thundercloud and muffled her out of sight

Chorus

She became a rose, a rose all in the wood
And he became a bumble bee and kissed her where she stood

Chorus

She became a nun, a nun all dressed in white
And he became a canting priest and prayed for her by night

Chorus

She became a trout, a trout all in the brook
And he became a feathered fly and catched her with his hook

Chorus

She became a corpse, a corpse all in the ground
And he became a the cold clay and smothered her all around

Chorus

Kevin Stork,

'Twas I whom you recall from the Reed Renn Fayre, probably 1983 or 1984. I used to run around in a tunic made from an old burlap sack with a black hood crudely stitched on it.

The fact that my performance persisted through the Renn Fayre haze and all these years gladdens my heart. Thanks. Made my day.

Joe, and Kevin Ryan: yes, that is the version I learned as a lad, when the commercial FM band was still more like community and college radio. The station I listened to had put Alison Gross into their 'rotation' which captivated me (what is it about sex and sorcery that mezmerizes the male pubescent imagination?)

I still perform this song, most recently, last night at the Elephant & Castle (SW Second at Washington in Portland) where I occasionally chime in with Spinnaker, and cover their breaks. I just happened to be poking around digitrad looking for these lyrics (so I didn't have to type them up myself). I'm teaching my wife to play autoharp, and this is one of the songs she said she wanted to learn.

My working repertoire includes numerous other songs rendered by Steeleye Span, chiefly from Parcel of Rogues, Below the Salt, and Now We Are Six.

Cheers,

Broadside Johnnie
