Subject: lyrics to 'Dem Bones'

Does anyone know where I can find the lyrics to the song that I think is entitled "Dem Bones"? I heard a sermon preached on a text from the Bible and it sounded as though the song is based on the text. "Dem bones, dem bones, them dry bones .....Now hear the word of the Lord". Thanks for your help.

There's one "Dry Bones" in DT, but that's not the one you want.

Just in case any of you didn't know, the song refers to a passage in the book of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament; which was also the source of "Turn, turn , turn". It's a good read - just remember it's not supposed to be surreal!

Actually, I am pretty sure it is in the book of Ezekiel, from the poor slob prophet (the original Valley Boy) of the same name, if my Bible reading of my youth ("Remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth") was not completely wasted.

Vanity of vanities! Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. How embarassing, Peter! Well, that's two good reads then. (Three if you include Proverbs)

And here's another:

Lyr. Add: DRY BONES

God called Ezekiel one mornin'
Go down and prophesy.
Ezekiel taught the Zion the powers of God
And the bones begin to rise
We going to walk around with-a dry bones
Why don't you rise and hear the word of the Lord?

Tell me, how did the bones get together with Ezekiel prophesy?
Well, the toe bone connected to the foot bone,
Lawd, the foot bone connected to the anklebone
Now, don't you know the anklebone connected to the leg bone,
They tell me that the leg bone connected to the knee bone
Lawd, Lawd, the knee bone connected to the thigh bone.

We going to walk again with-a dry bones
We going to walk in the valley with-a dry bones.

Tell me how, did the bones get together with Ezekiel, prophesy?
Well, the thigh bone connected to the hip bone,
Lawd, the hip bone connected to the back bone
They tell me the back bone connected to the shoulder bone
Well, the shoulder bone connected to the neck bone
Lawd, the neck bone connected to the head bone
We going to walk around with-a dry bones
We going to hobble in the valley with those dry bones.

A somewhat unexpected rendition: Dry Bones.

Not bad guitar playing (more than yer basic 3 chords). Sure looks like he was playing, but I think they ultimately overdubbed it because there are a couple of strums in the audio that aren't in the video.

Season's greetings!

Obviously, this song was contrived by medical students as a mnemonic in anatomy class.

The phalangeal bones connected to the metacarpal bones,
The metacarpal bones connected to the carpal bones
The carpal bones connected to the radial and ulnar bones....
Now hear the word of Henry Gray.

I now recall that this was one of the first songs I ever heard. Was there a record with a lot of American radio play in the early '50s?

Or maybe it was featured in an Ernie Kovacs skit. I seem to recall puppet bones being connected against a black curtain.

It was so long ago, it's almost as though somebody else was doing the watching and listening....

Like a lot of songs that have been popular for a long time, this one has had different variations of the lyrics. The Delta Rhythm Boys recorded a very familiar version in 1930. but the earliest recorded version cited is from 2 years earlier by the famous Myers Jubilee Singers, which is MUCH DIFFERENT. That one goes out of copyright at the beginning of 2024 and the other more familiar one does not. So I'm starting to wonder: What exactly did James and Rosamond Johnson actually write? And incidentally, what was their actual song title? Anyone?
