I associate this great oldie with Porter Waggoner. The tablature is reversed, no? "How many times, etc." starts in the 4-chord, then 5, then 1...right?

Campfire, you're thinking of "Wild Side of Life" (Hank Thompson), which was a remake of "Great Speckled Bird", which I think was in turn a remake of "I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes". Great tunes never die.

I have this in a book somewhere. I'm afraid its at my father's, tho, 6 hours north. I've been through all my music books here and didn't find it (altho I found lots of other stuff I'd forgotten I had. Ended up playing 'stead of computering)

I take it you don't have the RUS teaching tapes? I tried playing it from the RUS chords and trying to pick it out note by note but wasn't completely happy with it. I'll keep working on it. I'd like to learn the guitar for it anyway. We sing it quite often at camp, but I don't play it...yet.

Ooops - missed your message, Campfire. I transcribed the lyrics and chords from Rise Up Singing, but I often don't like the chord suggestions in that book and don't know music well enough to come up with my own. I was hoping somebody could post a MIDI for inclusion in the database.

I'm not satisfied with the information we have on this song. I learned it from a performance by John McCutcheon. He accompanied himself on autoharp, and the song sounded timeless - not a commercial production from 1955. Isn't there somebody who can tell us something wonderful about this song?
