Hi, I wanted to know if anyone knew the chords to this wonderful song. I plan on singing it with my daughters second grade class, but need the chords. (I;ll also see if I can figure them out) My sister has been singing this for years with us, what a great song. Reminds of my childhood at camp!!!!!!!! thanks Hummingbird

Hi, Hummingbird - of course, you know that the lyrics from the database are here (click).
Chords from Rise Up Singing are:

G - C G / D - - G / G - C G / C G D G

(chorus)
/ " / D - G - / " / C G C G / C G D G

I hope that notation make sense to you. A dash following a chord means to repeat the previous chord again. An empty space between two slashes means to repeat the previous chord group again. Quotation marks mean same as the chords directly above.

A nice "history" is found here Dr. Suess' My Uncle Terwilliger

However, and in the "SPIRIT OF A more than a THREE CHORD SONG"

Obviously, being a WALTZ it is 3/4 time
the "dots" are spacing they ARE NOT beats......((for the critical idjets out there!))

G.........................C.............G
I went to his room in the middle of the night.
..D.......................G
I crept to his side and I turned on the light.
....G.....................C..........Em
And to my surprise he was nowhere in sight,
.......C........G...........D...........G
'Cause my Uncle Walter goes waltzing at night.

CHORUS

........G.................C.............G
He goes wa-wa wa-wa wa-wa waltzing with bears,
D.........................G......C/G....G
Raggy bears, baggy bears, shaggy bears, too.
........G......................C............Em
There's nothing on earth Uncle Walter won't do
G............C.........G.........C
So he can go waltzing, wa-wa-wa- waltzing,
...C.........G............D.............G
So he can go waltzing, go waltzing with bears.

Chorus

G........................C...........G
We bought Uncle Walter a new coat to wear
D.....................G...................C
But when he came home it was covered with hair.
....G...................C...........Em
And lately I've noticed several new tears;
....C..........G.............D.............G
I'm sure Uncle Walter's been waltzing with bears.

CHORUS

G.........................C............G
We told Uncle Walter that he should be good
....D.........................G
And do all the things that we said that he should
......G.......................C..........Em
But I know he would rather be off in the woods,
......C.............G..........D..........G
I'm afraid we might lose Uncle Walter for good.

CHORUS ...G..........................C................G
We begged and we pleaded, "Oh please won't you stay?"
D.........................G
We managed to keep him at home for a day.
........G............................C........Em
But the bears all barged in and they took him away.
..........C...........G.............C..........G
Now he's dancing with pandas and he won't understand us;
........C...........G.............D...........G
And the bears all demand at least one dance a day.
G................................C..............G
Last night when the moon rose we crept down the stairs;
...D..........................G
He took me to dance where the bears have their lair.
...G.........................C......Em
We danced in a bear hug with nary a care.
.......C..............G...............C.........G
And it all feels like flying, there's just no denying,
....C........G.........D............G
And now my pajamas are covered with hair!
Chorus twice

I got tired of hearing the song some time ago (hmmm... we still lived in Virginia, and we moved here to Maryland in 1990, so it's ten years at least), so one day I was working around the house and came up with this:

My Uncle Walter's not right in the head;
He's been that way all his life, my Momma said.
It's not that he's violent, or falls down the stairs,
It's just he goes waltzing, waltzing with bears.

I makes a good first verse, functioning as an intro. And it lets you sneak up on folk who dislike the original, 'cause they won't be sure it's "WWB" you're starting until the second verse.

There is a song called "Waltzing With Bears", only it's about Uncle Walter. I think there is more than one version out there, but I have access to at least one of them. It's in a song book that we use in jam sessions around here. I don't have the title right now, but I can get it for you later. Check the forum again sometime in the next day or so.
Here is the requests Carol is answering. I moved Carol's answer and other "bear" messages from the other thread.

Hi,

Just the lyrics will do - I don't really expect to get any chords.

1. I require a full version of Childrens song - or is this all of it ?

'On a mountain stands a lady, who she is I do not know. All she wants is gold and silver, all she wants is a fine young man'

2. My dad's been singing a song that appears to be coming straight from his subconcious - i.e. starts to sing it when he is driving. Only words I have are :-

'Old Uncle Albert was dancing with bears, dancing with bears, dancing with bears'

Thanks,

Sean MacRuaraidh.

Thanks for the tip - maybe this is the one - I wonder where my Dad would have heard this?

Verse 1
I went upstairs in the middle of the night,
I tiptoed in and I turned on the light,
And to my surprise, there was no one in sight,
My Uncle Walter goes waltzing at night!

Chorus
He goes wa-wa-wa-wa, wa-waltzing with bears,
Raggy bears, shaggy bears, baggy bears too.
There's nothing on earth Uncle Walter won't do,
So he can go waltzing, wa-wa-wa-waltzing,
So he can go waltzing, waltzing with bears!

Verse 2
I gave Uncle Walter a new coat to wear,
When he came home, he was covered with hair,
And lately I've noticed several new tears,
I'm sure Uncle Walter goes waltzing with bears!

[Repeat Chorus]

Verse 3
We told Uncle Walter that he should be good,
And do all the things that we said he should,
But I know that he'd rather be out in the wood,
I'm afraid we might lose Uncle Walter for good!

[Repeat Chorus]

Verse 4
We begged and we pleaded, "Oh please won't you stay!"
We managed to keep him at home for a day,
But the bears all barged in, and they took him away!
Now he's waltzing with pandas, and he can't understand us,
And the bears all demand at least one dance a day!

[Repeat Chorus]

Those lyrics (Waltzing With Bears) sound about right. The book I have is called "Rise Up Singing" by Peter Blood and Annie Patterson (A Sing Out Publication - Sing Out Corporation, PO Box 5253, Bethlehem, PA 18015-0253 (215)-865-5366 ISBN 09626704-7-2) According to the book, the song was originally written by Dr. Seuss and Eugene Poddany and published by Random House, Inc. (1967) The original title was "My Uncle Walter Waltzes With Bears" and it appeared in the "Cat in the Hat Songbook". The adaptation in the Rise Up Singing Songbook is being called an original composition by Dale Marxen (1986), Tomorrow Music PO Box 165, Madison, WI 53701. It's a great song, especially for me because I have an Uncle Walter who is a bit eccentric and who might be the sort who would waltz with bears.

A "Digitrad and Forum Search" for Waltzing with Bears brings up one DT entry and quite a lot of references in the Forum.  The song has also been discussed quite a bit on the newsgroups, too; a search at Dejacom's  Usenet Discussion Service will find you a number of variant lyrics.

Don't have the chords - but the ABC above can be cut and pasted into the convertor at Concertina.net and give you midi or sheet music.

Or you could get Pavane's program which will take the ABC and put chords to it for you.
