Remember Brixton Bert's wake there, organised by the late Dave Bryant? A great occasion in a very suitable venue.

Draft letter that anyone can use follows: -

To: Greenwich Council
Town Hall
Wellington Street,
Woolwich,
SE18 6PW

Dear SIrs

I understand that you are the owners of the Tudor Barn in Well Hall Pleasance. It is at present run mostly as a pub.    It is possibly one of the finest medieval buildings still standing in South East London. I am told that you plan to close it entirely and board it up.

That would be a remarkable act of irresponsibility. As the experience of the Cutty Sark shows, it is hard to keep a facility that is not in constant use secure from vandalism. If the Tudor Barn is simply boarded up it will of course at once become a target for dossers and vandals, and sooner or later be burnt down. That would be a huge loss to the amentiy of the neighbourhood.

It is, in practical terms, essential that a sympathetic use is found for the building to preserve it for future generations.

I should be grateful to hear from you wth satisfactory assurances

Yours faithfully

The lease was up and Greenwich just decided that they don't want to renew it! Nothing to do with the current landlord. There were several people in the bidding for the lease. A group of busybodies called "Freinds Of Well Hall" also objected to the building being used as a pub! So now it will be boarded up and probably vandalised.

Are you able to tell us why it is being closed? It might be of help.

The Tudor Barn is to close on 24th February 2008. Greenwich Council are refusing to allow the premises to be used as a pub any longer. This venue has been the home of FOLKMOB for 12 years. This is devestating news to a lot of people who have enjoyed attending/playing at this fantastic venue over the years. The Club was given no advance warning of this we were just casually informed by one of the barstaff. We will not be going down without a fight. So please can anybody who wants to support us, write to your MP, Greenwich council, the press - anything that can help.
