I just wanted to let people know that the Open Meeting will be held on Monday June 25th at the Old Bridge in Holmfirth at 8.00.
If you have any helpful comments about this year's festival and suggestions for next year we would love to hear them.
Please come along if you can.

I know in my last post I suggested that this thread should get back to being about Holmfirth and all things folky therein but I just had to write in to say that I have now just topped £300 without the Gift Aid. It comes to just over £390 with Gift Aid.

Thanks ever so to those who have helped me achieve such a wonderful sum of money for Cystic Fibrosis Research.

Oh and by the way I did the walk last Sunday. Those who came to the festival are likely to remember Jenny who was I/C stewards - well she did it as well and raised money for Alzheimers but I don't know how much. The weather was a lot better than it was the previous Sunday at the Festival but it would have been a very miserable walk if it had been raining.

Thanks to Bryony (shouldn't you be in a tent at Shepley?) I've made my £300 if you include the tax back through gift aid.

Tyke's story is pretty harrowing but I can tell you that most families afflicted by CF are just the same as any other but with the knowledge that any slight cold or chest infection can be serious.

Most kids can live a reasonably healthy life thanks to the advances in science brought about in part by the CF Trust and the research they are able to fund. A breakthrough is so close now so any help is most gratefully received.

I want to try to ensure that my grandchildren can have their father around until long after they are grown up.

Thanks to all.

Now maybe this thread should get back to what it was set up for.

Come you lot this is for a very good cause The Cystic Fibrosis Trust!

Ok I'll tell you about just one Family that was not just devastated but destroyed through this terrible illness. As mother of two boys she had to over most of their lives travel down to London for treatments and tests. The boys missed a lot of school time and never really caught up with the lesson that they had missed. Dad well he did his best but inevitably the strain took its toil. He would go out on a bender when things went from bad to worse. The woman he loved the mother of his son's had just a slim chance of survival. It was very difficult for him to hold down a regular job having to take time off work to travel down to London with his wife for her treatments.

A long wait for a heart and lung donor that would be a suitable match to save her life or at least extend it so that she could live to see her sons grow up. Try to imagine how that family managed as the years of waiting went by. How would you feel if it were you daughter and your grandchildren?

Then at last a Donor Heart and Lung becomes available so once more the long journey down to London one last chance for life and happiness. Sadly a common cold put an end to all her hope and dreams the transplant could not take place.

After her death Dad tried to keep the family together but having gone into debt and no regular job and feeling. Well I can't tell you how he felt only family's who have gone through this traumatic experience could. I can't tell you how the two boys have coped when their Dad committed suicide. All I can tell you is that this is a very good opportunity to sponsor Cath so that she can help The Cystic Fibrosis Trust do there work. Click Here

Thanks for all the appreciative and supportive comments that have appeared on here.

Now for something completely different.

Tyke has posted some pretty naff links on here (oh yes you have!) but one that links to my Justgiving site is deadly serious. I am doing a 6.8 walk on Sunday in aid of Cystic Fibrosis. I set off with a target of 100, quickly raised that to 200 because of some very generous sponsors and have now gone up to 300. If anyone would like to add a few quid to that it would be wonderful.

I haven't had much time for training over the past few weeks and 6.8 miles doesn't sound too far if you say if quickly but it's a damn site further than I've walked in a long time although I must have clocked up a few over the weekend dashing from venue to venue.

Anyway I'm off to the gym now to pound the treadmill. Thanks in anticipation? (I can't do the link but I know someone who can.)

That could be why the crowd in the park decided to weather the rain and stay rooted Sue!!
Seriously though, all the morris teams were magnificent to put up with the showers and keep on dancing and I'm sure the crowd really appreciated that and wanted to show their appreciation.

30 morris teams over the weekend must have made this one of the biggest gatherings of morris sides in the UK this year.
That's some achievement by the organisers.

Yes - many thanks to Cath and everyone involved.
I was particularly impressed by the large number of people who stood in the rain in the park to watch the dancing after the procession. I'm not sure what the Morris equivalent is of a 'wet T-shirt competition' - but I reckon we could all have entered.

Thanks again to Cath and the team.
I was only there for the sunday - but it was a packed day, with three performances and not much time between. Thanks to the many who came to my John Clare performance - and stayed so quiet!
I met up with a few old friends (but didnt have time to talk to them obviously) and while I was doing the guitar workshop, caught sight of the marvellous Coconut Dancers doing their thing in front of the pub, before the rain came down.

Brilliant weekend. Brilliant festival.
The fact that you did'nt feel stressed out and could actually enjoy the weekend Cath is testimony to all the pre-planning and excellent organisation by you and all of the committee.
From my point of view and many others the weekend ran like clockwork.
If there were any glitches they certainly were'nt obvious to everyone attending and I never heard any grumbles or complaints from anyone.
The whole Festival seemed seamless and without fault.
To my knowledge there was also no trouble in pubs etc from the local fraternity who had been drinking all day.
This really is 'The Friendly Festival' that caters for everyone in the folk scene, satisfies and rewards the whole business and social community and really should be the role model and example to other folk festival organisers across the land.
Reading the comments from other contributors on this thread it looks like all are happy bunnies and will go away and will spread the good word about this festival and even more will come to it next year.
Also reading previous comments it seems that 'The Spoon Workshop' on Sunday morning was a resounding success. It just shows that you never know what will attract the punters and be a real winner.
Perhaps next year it will be a 'headliner' event!
It also shows that lots of creativity, inclusion and experimentation by the committee by offering a broad range of events will win out on the day and hit the nerve of a most diverse folk community.
Well done to all the organisers. Sorry I could not offer more to you this year due to personal reasons but my spirit was always with you.
And I still owe Tyke a pint or two and am grateful that my tent was not adorned with tea bags! Thank you.

Kate Bramley at the Cellar.
Saturday and Sunday afternoons at the folk club in the White Hart
Gordon Tyrall's John Clare hour.
Shellbacks (of course)
and that spoons workshop!! So many serious faces as people of all ages concentrated on that classical piece. One of the audience told me that 'There was a point where you were all together and I recognised the tune' Great fun.

Thanks to all the team for everything.

It was a privilege to perform there, and I also enjoyed Dave Aston's pipers' meeting at the White Hart.

From: GUEST,Ian Jackson

I'd just like to say a big big thanks to the organisers of the Holmfirth Festival of folk. My wife Sandra and I had a great time. It's the first time we've been to Yorkshire in 35 years (work has kept me too busy) and it was well worth the wait. Even the rain didn't spoil if for us.

We enjoyed every event we attended. We particularly liked the Friday concert at the Old Bridge. That young duo Gilmore and Roberts were great, I've never seen guitar playing like that. I also really liked the singer that they sang with, Gerry McNeese (I'm not sure if that's the right spelling as I couldn't find him in the programme). His song 'Danger Sign' was a beautiful. Really tasteful and accomplished guitar playing too. He seemed to be everywhere this weekend as I saw him with a couple of morris dancing teams and again singing unaccompanied. He told me he's in Dartmouth next weekend and that's not too far from where we live so we'll be going to see him again then.

The spoons workshop was amazing also. What a sight to see (and hear). And such a variety of dancers and street performers, even the grey clouds couldn't take away the colour of it all.

We'll be coming back next year if we can.

Thanks again

Ian & Sandra Jackson

Well I do hope everyone enjoyed their Holmfirth 2007 experience

The Spoons were very well received!

Craig Morgan and Robson very special

Jamie Smith and Ray Moore well nigh spontaneous collaboration brought Ray's songs with Jamies 'Celtic Collection' of tunes in keys I have never heard of called out made interesting listening

Roberts and Gilmore, well Ok Jamies Roberts is from Barnsley, but what a brilliant innovative, percussive guitar style ~ no not like Nick Jones, need to be seen and heard and will be out on the folk scene full time I believe ~ Just finishing Leeds C M degree course both of em and such talented fiddle from Catriona

Brian Peters and Gordon Tyrall, Shell backs

Dame Patti and Ned Clamp spoons workshop on Sunday Greeeaat!!
If I a have missed anyone I can say I barely left the Old Bridge

Thanks to my mate George Clarke for leading me back to the camp site on Friday

Splotty and I had a wonderful weekend. A great big thank you to Peter at the Picturedrome for booking me. Fate works in mysterious ways. It was a most interesting gig and great fun on Sat night. We have a venue like that in Cardiff. Also to Cath for putting the spoons workshop on in Sid's cafe Sunday morning. I must admit I was a bit dubious about the 10am start but it appears Yorkshire people get up very early on Sundays! We knew it was going to be a good one when we arrived at the campsite Friday night and were offered a cup of tea by our prospective next door neighbours.   We would very much like to visit you all again. Lots of love Ned and the Dame.

Dear Mr Duck and any other campers

This was answered some posts back by Panurus Biarmicus after I had managed to cloud the issue - I forgot that there is a locking post that goes in to prevent vehicular access. I should remember as I'm down there every day but senior moment possibly.

All you need to do is move your vehicle off the field if that is where you have been. It is possible that you may be to the left of the camping field if you are in a caravan/camper van so it won't be an issue to you.

The scouts will have been on round the clock duty from Friday lunchtime and so it is not unreasonable that they want to go home! They have done a brilliant job in organising all the campsite negotiations with the council and all the bookings.

See you in the Postcard tonight

Our other camping query is that you say the sit must be cleared by 4.00pm. and after that time the field access will be locked. At that time we are going to be in a concert in town performing with the Shellback Chorus. A number of others will also have caravans and campers which we will need to removed from the field.
How can we be in two places at the same time?
Will it be possible to make arrangements to leave the field after the concert has finished, or will we have to move our caravan earlier in the day, and if so, where do we put it?
Quack!
Geoff.

In reply to Mrs Duck - there is no problem for caravans etc.

What normally happens is that tents are directed to the field on the right and caravans/camper vans on the left.

The scouts are managing the site extremely well and I'm sure they have it all sussed as to where things will go so don't worry.

I'm down there every day with the dog (I do clean up after her!) and the ground is still very firm despite the recent rain so all should be well.
