Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: Amos Date: 10 Dec 06 - 10:29 AM Oy, Jacqui!! The day K has to force himself to have somp'n to say will be a cold day in hell!! He has a one-liner for every situation, and his attention is so lively the situation changes every few seconds. A |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: jacqui.c Date: 10 Dec 06 - 09:45 AM Spaw - believe. :0) Dave- we didn't want to say anything until the surgery was over and the surgeon was happy with the result. We're still really just holding our breath to see if there is any improvement. We can't fault the hospital at all - the staff were all so helpful and kind. When we discussed getting Kendall discharged the nurse did say that sometimes the doctors have to be chased up to sign the forms but I explained that we would have a five hour drive back to Maine and, by 8.00am, I'd had a phone call to say that he was being let out at 10.00am. That wa a complete contrast to the Boston hospital where he had the laser surgery two years ago - I couldn't even get an update on his condition the day after surgery from the very rude person on the other end of the phone. Mary had to ring back and use her New York accent to get the info! Kendall is being very good about not talking and now thinks that when the time comes for him to try to talk he will have to force himself to do it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: NH Dave Date: 10 Dec 06 - 09:25 AM Kendal, you have to remember that hospitals pay poorly, and hire cheap, so that the real nurses we were accustomed to in our youth have been replaced by a group of people just off the street, supervised by one real nurse for the entire floor. In this respect, hospital care has gone way, way down. On the other hand medical science has progressed so far and fast that even the cheap help can't totally diminish the miracles that can be achieved in medicine these days. Get well soon, but don't push things too much. Good effects come from small steps forward, not giant attempts at leaps. Mary - And you never said a word! Bad Mary. Dave |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: kendall Date: 10 Dec 06 - 08:51 AM Bert, right now I'd settle for Daffy Duck's voice! Bernie reminded me of something that happened to me on a previous visit to the hospital. I'm lying there and the nurse, a very young, inexperienced nurse came in with a foot long needle to draw blood. Being somewhat intimidated by this old salt she said "I'm sorry, but I have to give you a little prick." To which I replied, "That's ok, then I'll have a matched pair." It took her a while to hit my vein, and it is the size of a mop handle. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: Tinker Date: 10 Dec 06 - 08:06 AM Okay I've just about cleaned up the energy here and will send out some good stuff to the Far North. I know Jacqui and Mary can keep you under control if we just supply a little bit of patient energy to sustain them. Keep writing and keep quite one day down two to go.... Big hugs and lovin' tink |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: John MacKenzie Date: 10 Dec 06 - 06:24 AM I am reminded of a harmony group that I met at Sidmouth who at that time were calling themselves 'Four Chords Sake' So Kendall, for chords sake, look after yourself. Giok "Oi Jacqui, I've got problems with this ear throat o' mine!" I'll get my coat. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: bfdk Date: 10 Dec 06 - 06:23 AM gnu, I'm not implying (Heaven forbid!!!) that the Capt'n doesn't know Morse code. I'm merely saying that the combination of squeaky toys and Morse code might take a bit of getting used to - for all concerned :o)) Best wishes, Bente |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: gnu Date: 10 Dec 06 - 06:12 AM Morse code? I dare say the Cap'n is long familiar. But, what if Seamus sees this? I wonder what he will squeak when he learns the code too. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: bfdk Date: 10 Dec 06 - 04:15 AM Becca, I think that with a bit of practice, you could even Morse using squeaky toys; short-long long-short-long-long short etc... :o))) Best wishes, Bente |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: Dan Schatz Date: 09 Dec 06 - 11:15 PM Mostly quiet for how long? We'll see about that.... Kendall, if good wishes from a minister can help, you have mine. If not, go with Geeta's - she's a scientist. Either way, you're covered. And don't worry about not having quite the singing voice when it's all over. This is FOLK music. Keep well, my friend, and good luck. Dan Schatz |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: frogprince Date: 09 Dec 06 - 09:39 PM Wishing the Captain the best of outcomes. For what it's worth: we knew an older gentleman who, in the process of acquiring a very distinguished service record in WWII, was wounded severely in the throat. The doctors told him outright he would never talk again. He worked his way, by sheer determination, back to a strong, clear, if slightly raspy, speaking voice; I don't know that he was ever a singer, but he could have so far as his rehabilitated voice was concerned. Hope some day to hear you sing. Dean. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: SINSULL Date: 09 Dec 06 - 08:50 PM I can't believe that Alice is actually suggesting daily hummings so that Kendall can build up his muscle. Think whom you are addressing, Alice! I can see the dimples and grin from here. |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: Leadfingers Date: 09 Dec 06 - 07:59 PM Having spent eight days on a respirator in an I C ward after parking a motor bike in entirely the wrong place at entirely the wrong speed and only being able to communicate on bits of paper I can at least say I know what its like ! Military Nurses seem to have a bit more common sense than most , 'cos I didnt have any problems like that ! Which is probably a good job , as trying to laugh on a Respirator is HARD work ! Hang in there Cap'n , and I am even sorrier that I missed you this afternoon ! |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: Nancy King Date: 09 Dec 06 - 07:03 PM Glad things seem to have gone well with the surgery, that this particular hospital experience was better than average, and that you're all back home again, with your sense of humor intact! Now don't blow it by trying to talk too soon, Kendall! Good luck with the mending process, and I hope to see (and hear!) you in Maine in February! Hugs to you and Jacqui (and Mary too -- sounds like she's earned her keep...)! Nancy |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: Amos Date: 09 Dec 06 - 06:33 PM Geeze, Skipper, I don't what it's gonna be like, this using pieces of your ear to stitch up your vocal cords with. I have been told by some that you are more usually known to speak through a different part of your anatomy altogether. But I never believed 'em. It's a good thing you don't have a tin ear or trying to sing again would put you on your mettle, I guess. I'll get my coat -- you heal perfectly. A |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: Alice Date: 09 Dec 06 - 05:49 PM My voice teacher has done rehabilitation not only on performer's voice, but on her own, as well. She had a stroke and had to learn to sing and talk again, which included returning to the opera stage in Europe and the US. When you can use the cords again, she says to begin with just humming a short note pitched slightly above the speaking level. Gradually lengthen the hum in duration and build the muscles up again day by day with the single note humming. |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: jacqui.c Date: 09 Dec 06 - 05:09 PM Nurse Ratched? WE don't need no Nurse Ratched here! Trust me, she's a real pussycat compared to the axe murderer (Big Mick's words) that he lives with! |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: Liz the Squeak Date: 09 Dec 06 - 04:45 PM Kendall... you just take care and do what Nurse Ratched says.... Nurse Ratched - that's not where you put the thermometer! LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: Cruiser Date: 09 Dec 06 - 04:29 PM Just be glad it wasn't a "Deep Throat" operation Mr. Kendall! Good luck Sir. Neat nurse stories. Almost makes me want to visit the hospital. "Now we ain't gonna get the Capt'n to shut up 'cause he's got a lot of lost time to make up... He's gonna be non-stop..." And Bobert...some here might suggest that you could use a similar or more drastic throat operation to "shut you up" However, I would strongly disagree. Mudcat would be, uh, well it would be, er...okay it would just not be the same without you. You are an original Mudcat classic. ____________________________________________________________________ |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: jacqui.c Date: 09 Dec 06 - 04:27 PM Right now we're hoping for a speaking voice. There was scarring and rigidity to the right chord and that will probably affect the tone of Kendall's voice. However, knowing the power of the Mudcat - lots of good wishes can't hurt, can they? |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: TRUBRIT Date: 09 Dec 06 - 04:23 PM Can't wait to hear you use that voice again.......; I wish I could be there New Tear's Eve to hear the inaugural concert but -- visitors from overseas who (horror) don't like folk music!!!! Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: Deda Date: 09 Dec 06 - 04:02 PM I've been off mudcat for so long that I'm sure I've been forgotten entirely. But for this thread, I just wanted to add my own wishes for full and fast recovery, and thanks for the great stories. (IMO, Maine is the greatest state in the union, though I don't get back there anymore. I can't imagine anything more valuable, more needed in this world than a Maine folksinger--especially Kendall.) Be well, be well. Deda (Amos' kid sister |
Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: MaineDog Date: 09 Dec 06 - 04:00 PM I understand that nurse's assistant. Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: Stilly River Sage Date: 09 Dec 06 - 03:57 PM Wow! I beat Bill D to a pun. . . The appropriate audience response to Kendall's future performances will be "'ear 'ear!" SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Kendall's had another operation From: catspaw49 Date: 09 Dec 06 - 01:37 PM LOL....Kendall, what makes the first story so funny to me is that the same thing happened to me. My wonderful friend Wayne is about as empathic as a person can get and has been in emergency med for most of his life. When I had the bypass, he stayed with me in recovery while Karen attended to things only she could do. I was on a vent and I awakened with Wayne's hand on mine. I wanted to know where Karen was but obviously could not talk. Both of us know some ASL thru Connie but neither of us is too great. I'm trying to ask him and pointing at my ring finger, etc. HE on the other hand is signing back, also quite badly. The silly part for us was that this went on for about 5 minutes before he heanded me a piece of paper and a pencil. I wrote in large letters, "YOU CAN TALK DUMBASS"............at which point he looked both chagrined and then started to laugh. My problem then was that you can't laugh on a vent and I went into a coughing frenzy. It's become a great piece of family folklore. Spaw |
