Subject: RE: folk day at the crayford arms crayford From: Girl Friday Date: 17 Oct 08 - 07:49 PM Pete - the way to deal with Hooded rude people is to give them the evil eye from under one's pointy hat. |
Subject: RE: folk day at the crayford arms crayford From: GUEST,Pete The Hat Date: 17 Oct 08 - 03:51 PM Well done to Lisa from the Hood Iam pleased you are coming I do not go to the Hood no more. In all respects most folk at the Hood are ok and nice people but you always find one or two who are not and rude to boot. Put me off going. |

Subject: RE: folk day at the crayford arms crayford From: growler Date: 16 Oct 08 - 03:21 PM If Melodeon Boy isn't busy collecting coconuts, Ruff and Reddy should be there |
Subject: RE: folk day at the crayford arms crayford From: Kev The Clogs Date: 16 Oct 08 - 03:03 PM Melodeon Boy - that was a truely wonderous tale - I will learn it and regale others with it's wise words on future occasions, probably when large amounts of alcohol have been consumed!! Still waiting to see if Gundulf's are able to get a side together(!) Still, you will certainly have Dilligaf and me. |
Subject: RE: folk day at the crayford arms crayford From: VirginiaTam Date: 16 Oct 08 - 01:43 PM Say what? fiddleborg? Googling this word produced only 2 hits. This thread and someone's freenet site (in German). |
Subject: RE: folk day at the crayford arms crayford From: Richard Bridge Date: 16 Oct 08 - 01:23 PM But against the fiddleborg, resistance is futile. |
Subject: RE: folk day at the crayford arms crayford From: GUEST,Girl Friday Date: 16 Oct 08 - 12:56 PM Magical as this story is. Melodeon Boy obviously has nothing better to do with himself. Man Friday's drumming is a defence mechanism against melodeon players with loud shirts which can, as you know, deafen and blind people in one foul swoop from 500 yards. This is the real explanation of why I'm GF. I have run Orpington FRIDAY Folk since 1987. However, Tam's has a ring of truth, in that I do try to help you all, and for some reason people think that I am the person to ask about anything and everything folk in Kent. |
Subject: RE: folk day at the crayford arms crayford From: melodeonboy Date: 16 Oct 08 - 09:30 AM "That's Girl Friday... give credit where it is due. Clue is in the name. Girl "Friday" = allusion to Robinson Crusoe's "Man Friday" so regarded as an assistant known for getting the job (any job) done." The true story is somewhat different: Robinson Crusoe was rather partial to coconuts. He enjoyed both the flesh and the milk, and would sometimes use coconut in the curries that he made for gourmet evenings where he and and Man Friday would sit and eat good food and discuss the finer things in life as the sun set over the open sea. Man Friday therefore spent a not inconsiderable amount of time up in the coconut trees, where he would cut the coconuts from the trees and let them fall to the ground. After a while Man Friday came to love the random beats that the coconuts made when they hit the ground, and he had an idea! He thought that if he made a wooden frame from the plentiful supply of wood on the island and then killed one of the island goats and took its skin, he could pull the skin over the frame and when he hit it it would make a percussive sound just like that of the coconuts hitting the ground randomly. He would be able to reproduce the sound he loved without having to bust a gut shinning up a coconut tree! And so it was that Man Friday became what we now refer to as a drummer, although he was destined to produce only beats of a completely random nature. This did not greatly please Robinson Crusoe as it distracted him from his melodic lap steel playing, and he would often huff and puff and take his instrument to the other side of the island. Man Friday's drumming style did, however, have its disciples, and even today, in deepest Kent (especially in the Orpington area), it is still possible to hear exponents of the Man Friday drumming style. |
Subject: RE: folk day at the crayford arms crayford From: GUEST,Motley Muso Date: 16 Oct 08 - 09:10 AM Motley have almost definitely got a side for this - will confirm next week Lisa (One of the "surely shower from the Hood" who WILL be coming !!!!) |
Subject: RE: folk day at the crayford arms crayford From: GUEST,Pete the Hat Date: 16 Oct 08 - 07:26 AM Edward. Thanks for the above advice. What that Landlord needs to learn is that there are other pubs then the British Oak its quite apparent to me that The Oak just turns over like any other pub so whats he on his high horse about ? personally I do not think much of the pub myself or the staff for that matter. I did not fly Blackheath in the end but I did fly The Tudor Barn Home of Folkmob, and will do other venues. |
Subject: RE: folk day at the crayford arms crayford From: romany man Date: 16 Oct 08 - 04:27 AM oh far to confusing for me, then anything confuses me, seems dead horse are coming we are awiting confermation from two other sides, so we will have singing playing as well as dancing sounding good, |
Subject: RE: folk day at the crayford arms crayford From: VirginiaTam Date: 14 Oct 08 - 02:34 PM That's Girl Friday... give credit where it is due. Clue is in the name. Girl "Friday" = allusion to Robinson Crusoe's "Man Friday" so regarded as an assistant known for getting the job (any job) done. |
Subject: RE: folk day at the crayford arms crayford From: GUEST,Edward Date: 14 Oct 08 - 01:55 PM Pete - watch out for the ignorant prat at the Oak tonight he doesn't like people putting flyers out in his pub "advertising other pubs" is what he says. |
Subject: RE: folk day at the crayford arms crayford From: romany man Date: 14 Oct 08 - 11:10 AM OK mate, just hope we get good day out of it, not just your flyers, i mean the whole thing, its not often a pub turns itself over to an unknown entity, essex girl you know too much about this area, worries me. ha ha |
