Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: katlaughing Date: 22 Sep 06 - 12:50 AM You're welcome, vl. I think it was Amos who first told us about that site. I have about 10 "stations" now.:-) |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: GUEST,SouthernCelt Date: 21 Sep 06 - 10:45 PM All of Ian Tyson's stuff since the early 70s is definitely "western" music but if you're talking about old classics and traditional cowboy songs, his "Old Corrals and Sagebrush & Other Cowboy Culture Classics" on Vanguard Records, #151/52 - 2, released 1994. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: van lingle Date: 21 Sep 06 - 10:12 PM Lin, I really like Buck Ramsey on your link. Thanks.vl |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: van lingle Date: 21 Sep 06 - 10:10 PM kat, that is so cool. Thanks.vl |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: katlaughing Date: 21 Sep 06 - 09:49 PM If you go to www.pandora.com and "make" your own radio station using any of the names above, you ought to be able to get a fair representation/mix, for instance I put in "Don Edwards" and the first song up was My Blue Heaven. Following that will be songs in a similar vein. kat |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: van lingle Date: 21 Sep 06 - 09:10 PM Guest Dale, I finally got on to the Cowboy Cultural Society. Great stuff, I'm listening to Woody singing Billy the Kid, thanks.vl |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: Lin in Kansas Date: 21 Sep 06 - 12:58 AM Try Frankie McWhorter or anything by the Ranch Dance Fiddle Band. Click here Great cowboy music, and an interesting fiddler to boot. Lin |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: van lingle Date: 20 Sep 06 - 09:15 PM Thanks for the Blue Sage Trio link, Mike. That is some fine playing and singing.vl |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: BlueSage Date: 20 Sep 06 - 06:04 PM I'd highly recommend two CDs by Brenn Hill; "Trail Through Yesterday" and "Deeper Than Mud" both of which can be purchased here. If you're interested in a more folk/bluegrass approach to cowboy music, you can check out some sample files of my CD by clicking here. I'd also second the recommendations of Don Edwards, Skip Gorman and Sourdough Slim... Mike Iverson |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: GUEST,Jim Date: 20 Sep 06 - 05:02 PM Merrick Jarret had a great old album (vinyl) of cowboy songs. I can't find it - I must've lent it to someone, but if you can find a copy it sounds like what you need. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: GUEST,Dale Date: 20 Sep 06 - 03:42 PM Ah, right you are Sean. I started to list them but since they are more than cowboy singers, I did not, but SHOULD have. You are just as likely to get Carter Family or other old time songs. And don't forget Gail's fiddle playing ~ most enjoyable, both of them. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: Sean Belt Date: 20 Sep 06 - 03:31 PM You can't go wrong with CDs by Gail Heil and Bob Bovee. Personally, Bob is my favorite singer of cowboy songs and a fine old-time style guitarist. Check them out here. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: Ernest Date: 20 Sep 06 - 07:21 AM John Shreve has a really good cd called "From Texas to Montana" (a second one is coming up). His website is great too: www.john-shreve.de Sorry, couldn`t produce a blue clicky... Best wishes Ernest |

Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: Midchuck Date: 19 Sep 06 - 03:11 PM Barry said: I'm surprised that Skip Gorman's name hasn't come up. I believe he has 3 CD's out 2 of which I play often & as far as true cowboy songs he's gotta be one of the best. His research into the music is invaluable & it shows through in his singing, he's also I believe a champion fiddler in this style & yoddler/singer. Ahh...he dabbles in mandolin in some small way, also, I believe.... Peter. (PS. That was nasty sarcasm. He's also a near-master of that instrument.) |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: GUEST,Arkie Date: 19 Sep 06 - 01:09 PM The Texas Trailhands, though I've not seen them in several years are still winning recognitions from fans of western music. They have a website. Red Stegall - I did not see mention of him but he deserves a listen. Gillette Brothers - Ditto what Dale said, and you really should see them live if you get the chance. Same goes for the Texas Trailhands. The Gillettes don't blow you away with theatrics but their music is carefully chosen and well done and put into historical perspective. Bob Campbell - has written some great western songs including one about Arbuckle Coffee and other artists are doing many of his songs. |

Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: curmudgeon Date: 19 Sep 06 - 12:15 PM I have to agree with Barry about the glaring ommission of Skip Gorman. Maybe becausehe's semi-local and has stopped by for a few of our sessions, he's better known arround here. But check it out for yourselves at his website, http://www.skipgorman.com/index.cfm The blue clickifier is not working at present -- Tom |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: RangerSteve Date: 19 Sep 06 - 11:48 AM Shanachie Records has a two-CD set called "When I Was a Cowboy", which I highly recommend. All the cuts are taken from 78RPM records, most are traditional Western songs and some of the artists were real cowboys. Also, try Glenn Ohrlin's CD on Rounder. |

Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: van lingle Date: 17 Sep 06 - 10:21 PM I might mention Utah Phillips who wrote one of my favorites, "The Goodnight Loving Trail". |

Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: katlaughing Date: 17 Sep 06 - 08:22 PM Mudcat's own Rex Rudeout's new "Jack Thorpe's Songs of the Cowboy" which is available with the book of the same name at THIS SITE and I see the first recommendation is by Don Edwards: Mark Gardner and Rex Rideout have done a masterful job in their major contribution to the history of cowboy music and cowboy culture. There is also a thread about it which you may read by clicking here. I might have a couple of these left. If you are interested let me know by PM. Be sure to read down in the thread where Mudcatters helped to identify some of the original artists. It was a wonderful experience. I second Chris LeDeux, esp. his early stuff. It's the pure-D authentic stuff of Wyoming. He used to bring his albums to the radio station where we worked when he was first starting out and needed airplay. Also, Rex Allen and Rex Allen Jr. Maybe more country but still very cowboy, at least in my family's opinion.:-) Beautiful voices, both of them. Have fun! kat |

Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 17 Sep 06 - 08:07 PM Regarding Around the Campfire, it is heard live on Saturday morning at 7am central time...I guess that's important if I piqued your interest. Saddle Songs is a 24 hour stream. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 17 Sep 06 - 07:56 PM I strongly endorse Fred McCormack's choice of "Back in the Saddle Again." This is a terrific introductory compilation of Cowboy Songs. Another one is "Vintage Country & Western" on Gallerie GALE450, distributed out of the UK by Demon Music. I checked the website for Demon, and it seems this may be out of print. It has a lot of cowboy, and some western swing and bluegrass. Highly recommended if you can find it. My all time favorite cowboy music is (early) Sons of the Pioneers, 1930s and early 1940s, and Tex Ritter who was a collector of this music as well as singer and western movie star. I also like the Sons of the San Jouquin, Brenn Hill, as well as the earlier noted Don Edwards (my current favorite) and Michael Marrtin Murphy. And definitely Ian Tyson. For those who have internet access--and, duh, I guess that's all of us--I recommend two sites: Saddle Songs at live365.com; and Around the Campfire at classicheartland.com heard live at 7am cental time USA, and repeated several times during the week. Both will give a great introductory variety of Cowboy Songs, old and new. Welcome to my world...this IS my favorite type of music. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: GUEST,Bardford Date: 17 Sep 06 - 07:21 PM Also check out Alberta's Corb Lund |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: pdq Date: 17 Sep 06 - 07:06 PM One more suggestion for folkies who want to get into cowbwoy music: Ramblin' Jack Elliot's recent (1999) "The Long Ride". About half Western themed, it has a few songs like "Dust In The Wind" which I have never heard before. Also Jack's "Diamond Joe" with the line "and the fleas to...". That song has been hard to find for years. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 17 Sep 06 - 06:52 PM many thanks mates.. this is a list to keep and treasure.. so many CDs.. and not enough time or money.. i'm another of those middle aged english kids who grew up watching cowboy films and series on the TV.. the wife dreads me putting a western on while she's in the house.. i like the lot from real authentic singers to roy rogers.. to modern cowpunk and alt-cowboy music.. even the odd metal and techno cowboy stuff that turns up every now and then.. ..but theres no way i'd ever dress up and go ****in' linedancing.. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: Barry Finn Date: 17 Sep 06 - 06:38 PM I'm surprised that Skip Gorman's name hasn't come up. I believe he has 3 CD's out 2 of which I play often & as far as true cowboy songs he's gotta be one of the best. His research into the music is invaluable & it shows through in his singing, he's also I believe a champion fiddler in this style & yoddler/singer. Some of his backup includes Jeff Davis, David Surette, Connie Dover, Ken Sweeney, etc. Anyway I can't recommeend Skip high enough. Another CD to check out is from A. Lomax's collection of "Deep River of Song" on Rounder, this volumn is called "Black Texans-Balladeers & Songsters of the Frontier" Like with shanties Blacks made up anywhere from 10%-20% of the laborers in this trade/field & recieve hardly any recognition or credit for their huge influence in these areas of music. Good Luck Barry |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: GUEST Date: 17 Sep 06 - 05:44 PM If you're into authenticity (along with fine singing) I suggest Slim Critchlow and Glenn Ohrlin. Skip Gorman is fine, too. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: GUEST,Wesley S Date: 17 Sep 06 - 03:35 PM I agree with Jed about Don Edwards. But my favorite CD of his is called "Last of the Troubadours". Just one man and his guitar. Great stuff. A two CD set but well worth it. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: Fred McCormick Date: 17 Sep 06 - 02:48 PM Check Back in the Saddle Again. New World NW 314/315-2. A double CD of authentic cowboy singers with a few dudes mixed in. Somebody also mentioned Cowboy Songs, Ballads & Cattle Calls from Texas. Library of Congress LP AAFS L28. This has been reissued on Rounder ROUN1512, and is about as raw and authentic as they come. The tracklist for Back in the Saddle Again is: Old Chisholm Trail, The Harry "Haywire Mac" McClintock Pot Wrassler, The Harry Jackson Gol-Durned Wheel, The Van Holyoak When the Work's All Done This Fall Carl T Sprague Streets of Laredo The John G Prude Sioux Indians Marc Williams Dying Cowboy, The Jules Vern Allen Tying a Knot in the Devil's Tail Powder River Jack/Kitty Lee Strawberry Roan Arizona Wranglers, The Lone Star Trail The Ken Maynard Ridge Runnin' Roan Glen Rice & His Beverley Hillbillies Whoopee-Ti-Yi-Yo John White Cowhand's Last Ride Jimmie Rodgers Little Old Log Shack I Always Call My Home Wilf Carter (aka Montana Slim) A-Ridin' Old Paint Tex Ritter I Want to be a Cowboy's Sweetheart Patsy Montana Cattle Call Tex Owens One More Ride Sons of the Pioneers Dim Narrow Trail Texas Ruby I Want to Be a Real Cowboy Girl Girls of the Golden West Back in the Saddle Again Gene Autry My Dear Old Arizona Home Rex Allen Cowboy Stomp Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys D-Bar-2 Horse Wrangler Slim Critchlow City Boarders Sam Agins Rusty Spurs Chris Le Doux Cowboy Song Riders in the Sky |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: JedMarum Date: 17 Sep 06 - 02:45 PM I have to voice a strong second for Don Edwards - West Of Yesterday, listed by C. Ham above. A true artist, performer, cowboy poet. He is an absolute "must hear" - if I had just one choice, he'd be it! |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: GUEST,J Date: 17 Sep 06 - 02:27 PM Wow! That was easy. Found a cd on Amazon.com for 7.99US with some additional tracks. Have just ordered one. It's called 'Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs' and was released in 1959. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: pdq Date: 17 Sep 06 - 02:26 PM If you like Grady Martin' guitar work with Marty Robbins, check out Rich O'Brien. He worked with Sons Of The San Joaquin, did one duet record with Norman Blake, and has his own recrords. Part of the Western Jubilee Records stable 'open mike' mentions. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: GUEST,J Date: 17 Sep 06 - 02:18 PM Marty Robbins released an album w/El Paso, Strawberry Roan, etc. I think it was called 'Gunfighter Ballads'. It's a little 'slick' as it was released in the 'Nashville Sound' era, but the songs are great. Grady Martin's guitar playing is worth whatever it takes to locate and obtain a copy...I'm going to googlesearch right now. I'll post back. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: GUEST,Dale Date: 17 Sep 06 - 02:05 PM Ditto to all of pdq's suggestions -- I should have thought of some of those. I have all of Ian Tyson's stuff except the last couple of albums. Add humorist/poet Baxter Black and rodeo/rancher/performer Chris Ledoux, who left us way too soon. Some of his music is quite authentic, some of it has a bit of a harder rock tinged edge to it. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: C. Ham Date: 17 Sep 06 - 02:05 PM LA's Tom Russell. Tom Russell is 55 years old and hasn't lived in L.A. since he was a kid. He now lives in West Texas. Some of my favorite cowboy albums are: Tom Russell- Cowboy Real Tom Russell- Indians Cowboys Horses Dogs Tom Russell- Song of the West: The Cowboy Collection Ian Tyson- And Stood There Amazed Ian Tyson- Cowboyography Ian Tyson- Eighteen Inches Of Rain Ian Tyson- I Outgrew The Wagon Ian Tyson- Lost Herd Ian Tyson- Old Corrals and Sagebrush & Other Cowboy Culture Classics Don Edwards- West Of Yesterday Peter LaFarge- Songs of the Cowboys / Iron Mountain and Other Songs Katy Moffatt- Cowboy Girl Peter Rowan & Don Edwards- High Lonesome Cowboy Craig Chambers- The Cowboy's Conscience |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: pdq Date: 17 Sep 06 - 01:43 PM Ian Tyson is the 'godfather' of the current Western music revival. The CD "Eighteen Inches Of Rain" is very even. Other vetrans of the craft are Don Edwards, "Red" Steagall (as much a story-teller), The Sons of the San Joaquin, and "Skip" Gorman. Other professional singers like Michael Martin Murphey and Peter Rowan try their hand at 'cowboy music', as do singer-songwriters like LA's Tom Russell. Folkies should try "High Lonesome Cowbay" CD. It's Peter Rowan, but he shares duties with Tony Rice, Norman and Nancy Blake, and Don Edwards. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: GUEST,Dale Date: 17 Sep 06 - 01:37 PM http://www.campstreetcafe.com/ You just can't go wrong with the Gillette Brothers, Guy and Pipp, ranchers and performers from Texas by way of Yonkers, NY, but they are the real deal. They are scholars of the music as well. http://www.thepricklypair.com/ Prickly Pair, Les and Locke Hamilton, a husband and wife team from Wyoming, also ranchers and performers of the highest degree. Both groups have sound files available. Perhaps the most real deal out there is Glenn Ohrlin, rancher and former rodeo rider, but Glenn doesn't do internet so he doesn't have a site, but he is sufficiently well known that information is easy to find. Look around for his book, The Hell-Bound Train. Used copies are fairly easy to find. If you manage to find a copy, you'll be pleased with it, guaranteed. I won't give you links because they are also easy to look up, but do consider Joni Harms and Stephanie Davis. I won't call them less authentic, but their music is a little more middle-of-the road at times. Good though! Which of course reminds me of Bruce "Utah" Phillips, who does quite a bit of stuff that would be considered cowboy music. A couple more easily located performers of interest would be Michael Martin Murphey and Don Edwards,. |

Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: Dave Ruch Date: 17 Sep 06 - 01:20 PM I would go right to the Library of Congress' CD release of Cowboy Songs, Ballads and Cattle Calls. That may not be the exact title, but it should be easy enough to find online. It's a sampling of cowboy songs in the voices of the people who actually did the work in the late 1800's - early 1900's. |
Subject: RE: Cowboy Music CD recommendations From: JedMarum Date: 17 Sep 06 - 01:06 PM You gotta hear these guys The English Brothers, great harmonies, fine yodeling, excellent selection of songs ... |
