About 20 degrees. In the 70s - 80s instead of the 90s - low-digit 100s.

So, roughly, what would the difference in temperature be (on average)now that the festival is in early May?:)

It's coming up again - North Texas Scottish Festival. It was moved from June to May to avoid the extreme heat that usually plagued the event. Still at University of Texas at Arlington in the Maverick stadium.

May 3-4-5, 2013

5:00 p.m. to midnight on Friday
9:00 a.m. to midnight on Saturday
9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday

Texas Scottish Festival and Games

June 4, 5, and 6, 2010 at the UT Arlington stadium. Map. They charge for parking in the lot (lot 26), but if it isn't too hot, I park at a friends house a couple of blocks from here and walk over.

Thanks Phil - since I'm not really likely to be booked for it, it's not going to be a problem, but hey, you never know, and if I was, I'd just get in there and do it. I'd maybe melt a bit at the edges, but there's plenty of edges anyway. :)

Now I'm sorry that I missed Teribus, but it's hard to see everyone.

Bob, the Dallas-Fort Worth area doesn't have a temperate climate. Pleistocene climate is more like it. Temps near 0F or over 110F both occur. It's miserable when the temperature and humidity both get up near 100 like last weekend, but it's not usually that bad. Crowds turn out for things like the Scottish festival and have great fun.

Teribus are a treat! They went over big at TSF this year. I wound up switching some stage times to accommodate their schedule - my friend EJ plays with Teribus and with Clandestine. Great band. Nice folks.

This is a festival I'm never likely to be able to attend, but I had to put in a good word for Teribus. If this is the same trio, I would give much to see them live. I was given a copy of their album How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bombard for Christmas by some friends who'd seen them at an SCA event, and I love love LOVE this album - I love me some free reed, I do, but this is a wonderful album with pipes and bombard, very danceable, wonderful energy music.

Well now, there's the thing - I don't drink.(alcohol that is) Coming from what is laughingly known as a "temperate" climate, where the highs are never very high and the lows are never really low - I'm used to a uniform chill, except for maybe 20-30 days per annum, when it can get as high as nearly 80F. With low humidity. :)

It was just a bit milder this year. We are not too bad beneath the cover of the shady tents. It is still hot, but you bake rather then broil and that is a bit nicer!

Sat AM was not too hot and Sunday was a bit milder then Saturday - and Sat afternoon wasn't as bad as last year - a nice breeze kept things livable.

Of course a nice cool Guinness or Bellhaven's helped out more then a few attendees!

Well it should--though the heat isn't as bad if the humidity is way low. Right now it is misery around here with high heat and high humidity. Means sweating is more or less out as a way to stay cool. Bummer. . .

Uncle Phil - thanks for the nice photos. My favorite one is of the caber (sp?) toss guy. Change your mind set for a moment and you can look at that photo as a man levitating a GIANT well-used bodhran tipper to the joy of all.

GUEST, newbie - if your husband fell in love with Rachael of the band Tullamore, one can surely understand - happens all the time.
One of the joys of Celtic music is the abundance of female players, and many of them so very pretty. Yet another nice thing about Celtic music is that the females do not "have" to be pretty to be accepted and respected. Cheers,............................mwh

SRS- We did fine. The weather was hot in middle of the afternoon, but not horrible under the tents with a breeze coming through. The thing that surprized me was no traffic problems Saturday given that the new Cowboy Stadium is so close to UTD.
MWH - Enjoyed seeing Smithfield Fair last weekend. They were playing as a Trio again -- sans percussion.

SRS - mwh here, formerly "Tx Guest." I have never played the Texas Scottish Festival, and I believe it's the only local Celtic festival I haven't. My known ancestry is Irish, although Scottish, and/or Scots-Irish is under much suspect from my mother's side. The bottom line for me is that I don't do enough Scottish songs to get through a weekend without a whole lot of repeats - and I'd rather not do that. I will be opening for Smithfield Fair at a coffeehouse in Arlington on August 28th; maybe we'll see you there. Who knows though, there may come a time when I know enough Scottish songs and I'll throw my hat into the ring. Thanks for asking, though....mwh

I enjoyed the festival. It was my first. The heat wasn't bad when the wind was blowing. We went Saturday afternoon then stayed for the jam sessions. Thanks for the tip! That was the best thing that I saw. My husband enjoyed all the music and fell in love with a (female) fiddle player.

Wish I could have gone myself. grumble grumble. Child support was late again this month. . .

It got pretty hot and muggy out there in the afternoons. How did you do?

It sounded like the new stadium was packed full of people willing to pay really high ticket prices for a concert with iffy services.

Hints? Come early. The workshops are in air conditioned rooms under the stadium. Some of the best performances will be Saturday night "Lassies Galore" and "Fiddle Faddle", and especially the finale led by Brian McNeill on Sunday. Avoid the haggis. Drink lots of water and walk real slow.

There are no bad performers in the lineup – the trick is trying to figure out a way to see them all. Look at the schedule and plan to move from stage to stage every few hours and you'll do ok.

I talked to some folks at work today about this weekend. On top of all of the stadium visitors parking on campus we'll have contractors and heavy equipment approaching the library (they're putting in a sprinkler system in the ceiling on two floors along with some other renovations). Saturday is going to look much busier than the campus does on a normal school day. I told them about the approach I suggested here and the concensus of the group is that is the best way to get to campus--sneak in from the southwest. . .   :)

When you back up the time on something like this, with a concert that starts at 5:30, the staff will have to be in place a lot earlier in order to let in the audience. The 3000 VIP folks might arrive late afternoon, but the 5600 others will probably have to be in place way before hand.

What I described is an easy route, not far out of your way. I've calculated it as the best way to entirely avoid the main part of campus. I often drive to work via this route because I sometimes park on a side street over there and take a campus shuttle to the library, I don't pay to park on campus. The Wetzel building on the front end of that lot houses the campus print shop where I spend a fair amount of time. Most days it is easy access, laid back parking. This weekend will be different. :-|

I'm printing your out driving tips now, thanks. The Scottish Festival is all weekend and the other concert is just Saturday evening, so maybe it won't be too much of a nusience. We'll see. I'd hate to see folks miss the Men in Kilts Cartwheel Contest(1) because of traffic congestion.

The long-range weather forecast for Friday through Sunday is mostly clear each day, with the high temperature ranging from 89 - 92. It has been worse. Let's hope the rain from today and predicted tomorrow doesn't turn the field into a quagmire again. Hot and Humid is something they do rather well in North Texas, but hot and dry is more comfortable. And around here, 90 isn't really that hot. I could live with 90 and dry.

There will be 5600 stadium staff cars and 3000 guests' cars parked at UTA on Saturday. That's a lot of parking and shuttle bus traffic. Many of those lots they'll use are on the south and east side of campus, so if you can avoid Collins and Cooper, I'd suggest going over to Bowen and driving north to Pioneer Parkway and head east. When you get to the light at Fielder (there are Kroger, ACE Restaurant supply and a large Baptist church at that intersection), turn north and then turn east again on Mitchell to get to the stadium. There is a city park on the left and an elementary school on the right at the light at the corner of Mitchell and Fielder.

Thanks for the reminder. I guess we'd better take I-20 and skirt the south side of town instead of going through Dallas on I-30. Things have been real busy at work, and I've been spliting my time between work and jury duty so I'm really ready to kick back and enjoy a festival weekend. Now if I can just convince Michelle to do the yard work this week...

Thanks, Phil. I had the thought the other day that I needed to fly this thread and see who salutes.

ALERT to all planning to attend the festival

The new uber-expensive Dallas Cowboys stadium will open on the 6th and has a big event (George Strait concert with Reba McIntire and Julianne Hough at 5:30) the same day, and they will be parking cars for thousands of stadium employees and VIP guests on the UTA campus and shuttling them north to the stadium.

There is parking at the stadium itself for the festival, and they get away with charging people to park there. I park at a friend's home nearby and walk over. I don't know if there is any advice to give except it might be a lot more crowded around campus this year, and there may be traffic jams in town. Be patient.

The picture of Roberta was last year's winner and is a great picture. This year the winner was a picture of a dude in a kilt, cowboy boots, and a ten-gallon hat - am irresistable image for a Scottish festival in Tejas but I liked the picture of Roberta better. Lots of pictures of cute kids in kilts this year, too.

You just can't beat a picture of a pretty girl! The winner was a picture of Roberta Rast of the Kildares, if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah - I love that Brian and mandocello pic!

The one I was talking about must have come from elsewhere - I don't see it on your site for '07 or '08.

If look closely at the SUNDAY ON THE JAR video, you might notice a marked similarity between this pic and the picture of Brian discovering the Almighty having a pint at the Angel Arms.

I think one of the Quebe Sisters is in the McNeill video. I know they asked me about the pics and it was I thought they should use. But - I know there are more videos coming. He said they were going to ask other performers for tracks and pics ... so maybe they're saving the Quebe and other '08 pics.

They posted another vid at the TSF Youtube page. This one is a Brian McNeill video from an earlier album but most of the performance pics are from the last couple of years at TSF - and most taken by Uncle Phil. I don't know who else gave the pics.

Sunday on the Jar!

The video of my song uses a track Travis Ener recorded live, and presumably cleaned up at his studio.
