I'm looking to travel from London (last minute idea!) to the festival & don't want to be ripped off - I'm very generous & nice with strangers (new friends!) & want to stay/camp somewhere nice (preferabl with showers & no b*llsh*t). If I have to buy a tent on route, I'm happy to share (or share yours lol) I'm also happy to give anyone a lift! I'm an actor/writer driving alone & want to connect with other lone travellers. I'm very open & love sharing! contact me: filmfund800 at gmail dot com

Just got back from Whitby last night, we stayed at the community college site (Moor & Coast). A great site with good facilities and decent folks running the show.

We'll be back there next year.

My thanks to those running the site.

John

The festival's Stakesby School site is cheaper than the M&C one at the Community College - but only available if you have a season ticket for the festival.

I think that Stakesby is a better location, though it is a bit smaller each year. The comparison is a bit daft, though. Chances are that both will be full, particularly as there is almost nowhere else you can pitch a tent.

There is going to be a questionnaire about camping for the festival this year - it'd be great if everyone gave their opinions.

Copy from "Need Camping during Whitby Folk Week"

The Temporary Campsite (run by Moor & Coast Festival)is no more expensive that other sites in the area. We provide a campsite with good clean indoor facilities on a great location. We had the oppotunity to use this site after talking to Malc (Whitby Folk Week) and we thought it would be a great idea to have it as a campsite.

Many people camped at Stoup Cross but that no longer is an option. There is a critical shortage of pitches available for tents, we are trying to provide an alternative...

Just to put the record straight, Moor & Coast Festival is a not for profit organisation. Funds raised from this will be put back into bringing music, song, dance and arts into Whitby and the rural area... No one takes a cut!!!

Moor & Coast

Lets hope Soldier Boy doesn't turn up with his rifle. :-)

The thing is Soldier Boy, if its too expensive for you, then find somewhere else.

Don't criticise the organisers. They are providing a valuable service.

I personally think your comments are unacceptable and best kept to yourself. You old whinger :-)

Regarding hamsters:

I think it depends whether you have them boiled or fried or done in breadcrumbs or batter!

I thought Lord Glen Rogers said there was no food on site? If there is do they do hedgehog pie and badger steaks?

It seems this subject is now moribund (nobody's interested) which I find rather strange as I was in Whitby over the weekend and a totally unreliable source informed me that the Bunny Girls Old Girls Association   had somehow heard that pets were welcome and have made a block application to the honourable Glen for the whole week!

Could this be the rebirth of Fluffy Morris? Derek Elliott would certainly be interested in offering advise and coaching, having starred in the original production in the early eighties (that's 1980s despite what a lot of people think!)

It's been a whole year since we've been around
To stake out our tents upon the hard ground
But we don't ever sleep cuz there's singing and beer
When the folkies go camping at Whitby

We will sing down the moon, the dogs will sing too
And we'll dance 'round the hazards of fresh doggie poo
But with leather leashes, there's lots we could do
When the folkies go camping at Whitby

Oops...forgot to log out to post that.

The official wording from the booking information states:

"Dogs are allowed on site but must be on a leash at all times, under control and cleaned up after. They must not be left unattended at any time during the day or night."

Will this stop the talk of dogs now...

Although other pets will be considered...!!!

I thought this thread was about camping at Whitby, not dogs although I must admit admit that we go to quite a few small 5 van sites and the ones that are top of the list have coarse fishing on site, a singers folk club near and no kids and no dogs - heaven!

And in both cases my experience has been that your first type of dog owner is in the majority. Again I stress, if those people were there without their dogs there would be no problem, but how can you tell one type of owner from another?

And what about the vast majority who fall between both of your definitions? In the smoker analogy, everybody shares the smoke to a greater or lesser extent, depending on whether the smoker is considerate or not. Same with dogs. My problem is that most dog owners are so besotted with their animals that they overlook the fact that others are not so. For me it's not so much being "disturbed" in the sense of the dog being a bit annoying - it's deeper than that. I'm part of a silent very large number who are positively uncomfortable with any animals (unfortunately allergic to cats for example) and to be told "he won't bite" when confronted - as if the dog was doing me a favour by not biting me (!) - is no consolation at all.

Which brings a thought to mind - how often do we hear that said? The fact that dog owners are forever saying "he won't bite" must be an indication that a dog biting you is a distinct possibility in the normal course of events, but that this particular one won't actually bite you on this occasion - just a thought, with tongue only partially in cheek.

No surprise then that I won't be at the festival campsite - I've found a delightful little site only a short bike ride away. NOw don't start me on the dogs versus cyclists issue ...........

cheers, Terry

surely it depends on whether dog owner is responsible & keeps their dog under control / cleans up after them .... or not?

I quite like the smoking analogy but surely, to be accurate...

...a dog owner who lets their dog run loose to come & disturb you and doesn't clean up their poo is like a smoker blowing smoke in your face or smoking close by in an enclosed space, and leaving their ash & tab ends littering the place afterwards. Both of which can cause annoyance and potentially health problems.

... a dog owener who keeps their dog on a leash and cleans up after them is like a smoker who only smokes out of doors and downwind and who clears up their tab ends... neither of which offends in the least, surely?

Which is quite a lot like smokers thinking it's great they can smoke in public places - you need to know that not everyone likes or is comfortable with your dog around them.

I think the point is that it's cheaper per night on the Moor and Coast Whitby Week Temporary Campsite, per night, per tent, per Folkie than it would be to put your Cat in a Cattery per night (reportedly £15 per Cat per Night. I have not got a clue how much more it costs to put a dog in Kennels.)

I don't know if the cheaper price is because those Cats and Dogs would help to keep the Seagull Shiite of the tents or not. As for dogs they are fine if the owner is a responsible dog owner. Dogs are not allowed on the beach on the west side they are allowed on the beaches to the East of Whitby including Robin Hoods Bay and to the East of Sandsend up to the Whitby Beach.
