Subject: RE: Deb Cowan/John Roberts at SINSULL's Feb 26 From: Siochain Date: 28 Feb 11 - 09:19 AM Time spent with convivial company through the wee hours of the night is one of life's pleasures. I am ready to head off for a full week of work feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Thank you, Mary, for once again bringing together good company, good music, good food and good drink, and for opening the warmth of your heart and home to others. Thank you, Jacqui for dinner (loved the parsnips!), and thank you John and Deb for the music. -Siochain |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan/John Roberts at SINSULL's Feb 26 From: kendall Date: 27 Feb 11 - 07:51 PM It was 80 degrees when I left Tampa and cold as a witches tit here! Such a pleasure to see/hear Deb and John. Come back real soon. Doryman, we have more experiences to share as we didn't even scratch the surface. |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan/John Roberts at SINSULL's Feb 26 From: adventure Date: 27 Feb 11 - 07:28 PM John and Debra....absolutely wonderful evening of songs, ballads and fun. Thank you for your selections and fine presentations.....WOW. Mary and Jacqui.....Joanne, Rose and I truly enjoyed the entire weekend....from supper to concert to breakfast and all. Kendall...so glad you made it back and we got to spend some time together. For the five souls who saw 5 a.m. arrive this morning....discussions, banter and diversity of songs was more than overpowering...guitar, voice, flute, melodian, concertina and banjo selections from all eras and authors. Really liked Debra's work ballads and super presentations entertwined with John's diverse song repertoire and instrument prowess on concertina, banjo and guitar. Life just can't get much better than what we experienced this weekend with so very many of our good friends. All concert attendees truly got to see two very fine performers in a very intimate setting. Thanks to each and all for such a wonderful weekend. Doryman |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan/John Roberts at SINSULL's Feb 26 From: Cuilionn Date: 27 Feb 11 - 07:15 PM Sue and I had a wonderful time, even if it did take a series of three semi-functional vehicles to get us there! Yes, SINSULL, the envelope is likely mine. I was still rattled from the logistical strain of the evening! We regret our departure before the song circle commenced, but after joining Deb on a song I *never* imagined I'd sing in public, I had to run home and finish--for real--writing a sermon for a guest preaching gig at a U.C.C. church the next morning! Got home at midnight, happy and tired and full of music, wrote for an hour, got up again at 6 AM and finished it. Whew. I especially appreciated all of Deb & John's "working folk" songs. You've inspired me to go "dig" out a recording of "The World Turned Upside Down" so I can wrap myself in the courage and power of that story. --Cuilionn |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan/John Roberts at SINSULL's Feb 26 From: Jeri Date: 27 Feb 11 - 06:33 PM "Hamlet in one minute" is "OOR HAMLET" by Scotland's Adam McNaughtan. I have a friend who had him for a school teacher and had no clue he was involved with music. Of course, John's version is anglicized. There's a take on the summed-up Hamlet (less humorous, IMO) in one of the Sigmund Spaeth "Weep" books. I didn't do a lot of socializing at all, but I had a great time. I ended up heating some freezer chicken stew. I'm trying to remember something I made last summer. Ground beef, garlic and thyme fried, then add cherry tomatoes just long enough to make the skin pucker. Add some truffle oil and serve over pasta. I think I may have even let it cool to "warm". This would be perfect for the grass-fed ground beef and the black trumpet mushrooms. I wouldn't need the truffle oil. I'll save that for one day soon when I'm more conscious. Mary, I don't think it was the red wine. I usually don't have a problem, but I only had one glass and I think I was having "issues" with the head before I even got there. Lack of sleep, OTOH, is a somewhat reliable way for me to get a headache. |

Subject: RE: Deb Cowan/John Roberts at SINSULL's Feb 26 From: SINSULL Date: 27 Feb 11 - 05:25 PM Jeri, I wonder if it is the red wine that is the problem. Some people find that the high tanni9n causes headaches. But NO, you would not have gotten more sleep here. We laughed and sang until 5AM - which was when I turned the lights out and said that I was going to bed. They all toddled off behond me. It was a really special evening and morning. John sang Carrying Nelson Home and had us all misty-eyed. It was wonderful to see Kathy in tow with Jason and Tami. She lights up a room. TRUBRIT and Tom arrived with Mim and a friend. They couldn't stay long and I think they never signed the wall. I don't remember when we last saw Peter and Joanne - they never change. We are so lucky to have them in our lives - a beautiful pair always with new songs. Jeri and I didn't have much time to catch up while we grabbed packages meat like it was a Blue Light Special at Walmart. The farm is producing abundantly. My egg supply has been replenished. Thank you ladies but did you really mean to leave me that yellow envelope? I will PM you. Rose came up with Peter and Joanne. She glows. It is good to see her happy. And her music just gets better and better. Jack and Marty were welcome newcomers. Jeri and Marty played musical chairs as we tried to find a seating solution - thank you for the help. It seems Jack and John go way back. Hope we see him and Marty again. Oh yes - there was some music. Usually with a chorus. Deb and John genuinely enjoy performing together. The highlight for me was "Hamlet in one minute" and the series of work/mill songs. The concert started at about 7:30 - 8. When it ended at 11:30 I thought they were cutting it short. Just flew by. Thank John. Thank you Deb. |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan/John Roberts at SINSULL's Feb 26 From: Jeri Date: 27 Feb 11 - 03:51 PM Didja ever have one of those days that you just had to get through so you could catch up on sleep? I feel like I have a hangover, but I only had 2 glasses of wine that had worn off by the time I got in my car. I didn't stay up singing, but I drove home and got to sleep a bit after 2:30-3... then I got up about 5 hours later. I've looked outside at the snow and I'm wondering if I have enough food and toilet paper to last until it melts. I might possibly have gotten more sleep if I'd stayed there, and there would have been breakfast. I'd seen John & Deb separately, but this was the first time I'd seen them together. What a lovely choice of songs, and what wonderful harmonies. Carole, SINS requested John sing George Ward's "Boatman's Cure", and he sang it. Thanks for asking for it! |

Subject: RE: Deb Cowan/John Roberts at SINSULL's Feb 26 From: jacqui.c Date: 27 Feb 11 - 01:29 PM We spent the morning at Mary's enjoying breakfast and good company. This weekend was a real treat. John and Deb are more than visiting performers to us - they are good friends and their visits mean a lot. Add to that the other crazy people who shared the experience and you have the makings of a terrific weekend. It was nice to see Marty and to meet Jack Lynch. Here's hoping we see them again. |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan/John Roberts at SINSULL's Feb 26 From: Jeri Date: 27 Feb 11 - 11:44 AM I made it home fine. Wound up with a headache anyway, but it's not a bad one. I e-mailed Deb a link to Roland tHTG. I have beef and a pork roast in my freezer and I have dried black trumpet 'shrooms. While I'm not up to cooking anything requiring any mental stamina, I'm dying to try those 'shrooms. There may be pasta in my future. Umami dearest... |
Subject: RE: Deb Cowan/John Roberts at SINSULL's Feb 26 From: Bupkes Date: 27 Feb 11 - 11:27 AM John was interested in Jon Boden's A Folk Song A Day web site when we briefly talked about it last night. If you're all still there having brunch, let him have a listen to Boden's version of Sir Patrick Spens, which John sang last night. Not as melodious to my ear as John's version, but interesting notes. Warm regards again to the blithe folks at your house on this snowy morning (as it is down here in coastal New Hampster). It's just stopped, about 5", and brightening outside; now to go blow the stuff around, humming tunes from last night. Marty |

Subject: RE: Deb Cowan/John Roberts at SINSULL's Feb 26 From: Bupkes Date: 27 Feb 11 - 02:31 AM Thanks for hosting a warm-hearted evening, Mary! Lots of banter and jokes, and of course good singing, from Deb and John. Some pretty risqué material, not quite PG-13 — maybe PG-50? I haven't listened to my recording yet. Also very good to visit with Jack Lynch, my old Cambridge buddy and Pinewoods roommate from camps in the 70s! Home by 1:30 after driving through thick snowfall after reaching the NH crossing. It's slippery over the solid ice, and I barely made it into the driveway. Marty |
