Subject: RE: Whitby singing/club sessions? From: Les from Hull Date: 23 Jul 12 - 10:35 AM Maggie and I run the Endeavour evening singarounds Sunday onwards and usually have Tuesday evening as a Mudcat Gathering. So if you are looking to meet up with other 'catters pop along. |
Subject: RE: Whitby singing/club sessions? From: GeoffLawes Date: 23 Jul 12 - 10:06 AM The Ballad session at the Conservative Club from 1pm - 3pm everyday except Saturday is usually a "particpation sandwich". It starts with two songs from the 4-5 booked singers and then singers are invited from the floor then back to the booked singers and so on. Occasionally the booked singer leading the session doesn't know the format and so floor singers are not invited to contribute but that is unusual. Wonderful singers and a highlight of the festival if you like ballads. |
Subject: RE: Whitby singing/club sessions? From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 23 Jul 12 - 09:20 AM I can echo cujimmy's posting. Taking it from the Robin Hoods Bay side of Whitby starting on Church Street:- The Middle Earth has sessions, sometimes just music, occasionally just singing. The Fleece in past years used to have 2 or 3 seesions all day, however current licensees do not appear to have much regard for folk music but that might change for folk week and that tune beloved by landlords "The Old Rattlin' Till" The Endeavour, programmed event of Maritime singing 1-3ish everyday then a free and easy session late afternoon and evening Black Horse, one sometimes two sessions, very much a jump in session afternoon and evening, small venue which can easily be monopolised by a small group. Friendship Rowing Club, free and easy sessions in an evening, big venue, cheap beer. The Board, not always used but they do not mind someone starting in there. The Dolphin, newly refurbished, folk friendly licensees but not used before, could be a good venue this year. Baxtergate:- Black Swan, used by folkies each year, sessions vary, depending very much on who gets in Wellington, has been used in years past, dependent on people actually usung it. Victoria Square The Station, used all day music in the main bar and singing in the small room to the right of the front door. The same team use the small room each year and it is often difficult to get a seat never mind a song. New Quay Road, the Ship, mainly music sessions all week, great for the diddly diddly lovers Flowergate, the Elsinore has a session every week on a Tuesday night, that will probably be engulfed by folk week though, friendly enough pub that welcomes folkies. York Place, bit off the beaten track up behind the hospital but there should be good sessions up there afternoons and evenings There may be other session that I've overlooked, apologies to their afficionado's. A cracking way to get into Whitby is down the coastal path from the Bay, lovely walk, cliffs on one side of the path and beautiful rolling countryside inland. |
Subject: RE: Whitby singing/club sessions? From: cujimmy Date: 23 Jul 12 - 08:21 AM Last year I walked down along the disused railway track to the "Half day at the bay", in The Dolphin, where Ray Hearne was among the guests. I was asked if I would like to do a floor spot which I did along with others. Then when the concert was over I caught a bus back to Whitby - it was a lovely walk, the concert was excellent and it was one of the highlights of my week. The First in Last Out session is on again this year, the singing at the friendship Rowing club is usually goo, the beer in there is a good and reasonably priced and there is plenty of room. The Black Horse was very good last year as well. To put things in a nutshell - You cant Go Wrong, youve come to the right festival. |

From: Surreysinger Date: 22 Jul 12 - 01:06 PM The event in Robin Hood Bay each day is the Half Day at the Bay ... a freebie with various guests from the Festival each afternoon in the Dolphin. Subject: RE: Whitby singing/club sessions? From: Tyke Date: 22 Jul 12 - 11:45 AM You need to look in this years Whitby Folk Week Program, I can tell you that there is usualy a day at the Bay event run by the festival every day. Warning DO NOT DECIDE TO WALK ALONG THE SANDS TO WHITBY as there is a good chance of you getting cut off by the tide. Use the disused Railway track it's 6 miles to Whitby but probably less via the Railway Track. |
