At the time the fields of sugar cane were being set on fire prior to being harvested (in order to kill off the rats and snakes) and as I looked down on the scene from the aircraft I thought of these lines from "The Flying Cloud" : "To the burning shores of Africa/Where the sugar cane does grow." OK it wasn't Africa, but it was an image that has remained in my mind for over fifty years, as has those old song lines. |
