From: GUEST,Jennifer Date: 21 Mar 01 - 08:39 PM Get on the web NOW & beg, borrow, or buy anything you can find by Tommy Emmanuel, the best guitarist this old gray haired guitar picker ever heard, & I've heard most of 'em! He is from Australia, there are at least 2 websites for him, and his cd's are rare & hard to find but well worth it. Even moreso his performances. You can catch him this coming Sept at the Walnut Valley Music Festival in Winfield, Kansas, USA. There the paid performers will line up around the stage to hear him! I especially love the albumn he made with his hero, Chet Atkins-the track "Ode to Mel Bay". Happy hunting! |

Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: LR Mole Date: 21 Mar 01 - 08:56 AM This probably wants its own thread but I'm in a hurry: Louis Prima was, in his time, HUGE. (Never mind what Nick Tosches says, though I suppose it agrees, in a way...) He was a cultural presence deserving of a musical Master's Thesis. Plus, he wrote "Sing, Sing, Sing". |
Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: GUEST,Matt_R Date: 21 Mar 01 - 08:47 AM Cool! Everyone of the songs is loaded with great melodies...you can sing along even on the first listen. And in usual Green Day style, it's got those killer harmonies... |
Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: Steve Latimer Date: 21 Mar 01 - 08:38 AM Matt, My girlfriend bought that Green Day CD. She loves that song, and to tell the truth, I kinda like it myself. Reminds me a bit of The Pogues. |
Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: GUEST,Matt_R Date: 21 Mar 01 - 08:31 AM I can't believe it! Chanteyranger likes Green Day! California punk YEAH!! Nimrod also has "Hitching A Ride" and "Redundant" which are favorites of mine to play. Have you heard the new album, Warning? It's more of a happy, pop-punk kind of sound. And a lot of it is very folky-sounding. "Minority" even has accordions and folk-like acoustic flatpicking. Check it out. And what could be more of a folkie anthem?

Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: Peter Kasin Date: 21 Mar 01 - 02:09 AM "The NexTradition" - Alison Kelley and Ken Schatz. Riveting performances of traditional material. Incredible. I play this CD over and over, and take my commute to work with "Byker Hill" and "Sinnerman" running through my head. "The Temptations Sing Smokey." Another one that gets inside of me, and has me singing "My Girl" and "The Way You Do The Things You Do" to myself. Their legendary 1st album, and what a great soul singer David Ruffin was! "Nimrod" -a CD by the Berkeley rock band "Green Day." The song, "The Time Of Your Life" is a treasure. IMHO, one of the finest rock songs to come around in a long time. Another one that's gotten alot of time on my CD player lately. -chanteyranger |
Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: Shouter Date: 21 Mar 01 - 01:57 AM Hey all, I've got a 24-disc changer I inherited from my dad when he upgraded to a 200-discer a while back. Being a blues guitarist I leave the first 20 slots stocked with country blues masters like Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson, Big Joe Williams, Miss. Fred McDowell, Blind Willie McTell, Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Lemon, Leadbelly, Mance Lipscomb, Robert Pete Williams to name a few. But the last four slots are for circulating discs and here are some of its usual tenants: Bob Dylan: from "Bob Dylan" to "Blonde on Blonde" Woody Guthrie: "Asch recordings Vols. 1 & 2 Ramblin' Jack Elliot: "The Essential..." (Vanguard) Odetta: "The Essential..." (Vanguard) Koerner, Ray, and Glover: "Blues, Rags, and Hollers" and "Lots More Blues,..." Lightnin' Hopkins: "Lightnin' Hopkins" (Smithsonian) Rev. Gary Davis: "Pure Religion and Bad Company" (Smithsonian) Miss. John Hurt: "Best of..." (Vanguard) Dave Van Ronk: "Inside Dave Van Ronk" (Fantasy) Anyone else share similar? |

From: BanjoRay Date: 20 Mar 01 - 07:23 PM Gandydancers - a cracking string band from West Virginia with Dave Bing and Gerry Milnes on fiddle, Ron Mullenex on banjo, Mark Payne on guitar and Jim Martin on bass. We just had them at the Gainsborough Old Time festival, and they knocked everybody out, and I've been playing the CD ever since. Lots of good old tunes and some lovely harmony singing as well - Piney Mountain is a really moving acapella song about the rundown of a logging industry, and its effect on a worker - sends shivers up my back every time I hear it, which is often. Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: BEK Date: 20 Mar 01 - 01:56 PM Just came back from NTIF where I got a fix: MacAlias - Highwired Two British ladies with amazing harmony and playing. "Wild West Romance" is a waltz time tune whose intertwined playing and harmonies had the car CD on repeat for about 100 miles of I-35 traffic jams. "John C. Clark" is an amazing song about 'real' love. Brian McNeill - Back of the North Wind I happen to think this is McNeill's best CD so far. I've had the distinct pleasure of hearing the man live three times and he just keeps getting better. Marc Cohn - I can't seem to get him OFF my turntable! Ed Miller - Scottish Songs and none too Serious. This was recorded at Austin's own Cactus Cafe. I've heard it enough to know most of the lyrics and I still listen whenever I need to cheer up. Jed Marum - Streets of Fall River. For those of you who don't know, Jed's a 'catter. I didn't get to hear him at NTIF, but his CD is good enough to make me want to brave I-35 one more time just to catch one of his Dallas gigs.
Cry Cry Cry - Okay, I can't seem to get past Track 2, Richard Shindell's version of "Cold Missouri Waters", but really, the rest of the collection is good, too. At least, I think it is.

Now my CD collection resides there and entertains me all day long. I set Windows Media Player on All Audio, Sort the list by alphabet, hit shuffle and play. There's no predicting what will come up next and it's all good. I would have a tough time picking out a favorite. Subject: RE: What's on your CD player lately ?? From: Art Thieme Date: 20 Mar 01 - 12:34 PM Funny you should ask right at this moment !? The mail just arrived with a CD of U. Utah Phillips #77 LOAFER'S GLORY radio show in which Bruce used interview tape recordings I made in 1961 of the 93 year old Wobbly (I.W.W. union member) PAUL DURST. I just heard it the first time and I've got tears in my eyes. That's for real. I've always known it was a valuable interview, but Mr. Phillips used tapes of friends of his doing ths songs Paul sang interspersed with the actual captured dialoge and song snippets of Paul Durst singing and fiddling. It was obviously a labor of love for Utah and I'm honored by his attention to those long ago interviews I did with this historically important gentleman when I was 20 years old. If you go to a U. Utah Phillips site, I'm sure you can hear it too. If it's not archived there yet, I'm sure it will be soon. All the best, Art Thieme |
