Where's these pictures then? Noreen, if I'm coming to Yorkshire, I sure would like to share a tent with you! I promise to wash my feet. I'll check the finances tomorrow and let you all know. Though I don't know about taking the Friday ferry, maybe the Thursday one and spend a day in York (there's a bus to York). Someone might be able to collect me in York on Saturday morning... Ah, now I'm getting excited!

I have been thoroughly enjoying these stories of what must count as one of the best posible gatherings ever. I've wanted to jump in and comment about each post at times, but it's been far better to read and enjoy. Ya' know I too was touched at the story of the cathedral stones and in a way, all of you are the "Cathedral Stones" yourselves........A wondeful meeting and exchange of old friends, many just met, bridging boundaries and history..... a meeting of musical minds.

I'm sure Max never had any of this in mind but what a wonderful by-product. Great pix arrived yesterday from Mooman and one look will tell anyone the tale. My absolute best to all of you.

Oh NO, Greg... the lovely Alfa! It survived my driving halfway across Europe at high speed on the wrong side of the road :0) and across the middle of roundabouts, AND Eric's driving three times round the Muenster one way system in the early hours of the morning, only to come to grief in your own backyard! Bummer! Hope you get it fixed up soon- I was looking forward to tearing up Chapel Haddlesey High Street in it....

More snippety memories of the trip:

Playing the grand piano on the high seas (think I may have mentioned that before!) in a pleasant swell, which caused the piano, in its golden boots, to move independently of me- weird sensation. It's ok for those who are attached to their instruments!

Eric experimenting with his favourite positions (for having his hair plaited)

Sophie's delight (now there's a name for a tune, Sam!) at being given her own Mudcat badge, like the rest of us were wearing, and watching her trying to read her name in the logo

Meeting up on the return ferry with a singing duo from Wigan who had been over in Paderborn for the weekend, entertaining the troops. We played together and they entertained us with Saw Doctors songs!

I went down to the Sloop in Barton last night, to make the few Catters in there wildly jealous, but some arse reversed their rust bucket into Alfa at high velocity, and buggered off. Now I'm spending all day in Leeds trying to get it fixed up.

At least the Sloopers were dead jealous of our junket. Played Going to the Well, Bill, which went down well. Thanks for that one.

The Ballad of Muenster.

(Roughly to the tune of "Dick Darby".)

We set sail in fine spring time evening.
Though late, we got there in time.
And the cars were packed with belongings.
Of seven, but we could have squeezed nine.

A woman with ankles so pretty,
you could see them, her trousers were short.
Held us up for another five minutes,
for she had control of that port

We sat in the bar all relaxing,
and laughing and talking with glee.
Then somebody said, "I feel seasick."
For the ship had started to sea.

A peaceful and quite easy passage,
no gales, but ales did flow.
Then Skipjack, (for he is quite clever).
Said ,"people I've blagged you a show".

We sat near the old grand piano.
Playing and singing our songs.
We emptied the bar in ten minutes.
I knew it wouldn't take long.

There was noise and a loud cacophony,
and somebody bought us a round.
He said, "can you sing the, "wild rover?"
So we did and we charged him a pound.

As the dawn came up we were still singing,
though some few had turned into bed.
At five thirty I was awoken,
by Cobble banging his head.

With Skipjack, his eyes like red sunsets.
And Bill still needing his tea,
we drove like we were greased lightening,
but we stopped 'cos we needed a wee

Two drinks and a hot toasted sandwich.
Took over an hour to arrive.
We sat there already quite knackered,
with plenty more miles to drive.

Now pat had a bad nervous breakdown,
though we hadn't gone far.
Her feet up and down, like tap dancing.
Every time Bill got quite near a car.

At last we landed in Muenster.
And met Wolfgang and his charming fam'ly.
Old and new friends all gathered,
and thought what fun that this time will be.

There was Wolfgang and Susan and Letty.
The Mcmoo's and giant Mudguard.
There was bodies and 'struments all over.
Between us we left one square yard. (Not metric!)

We walked round the old town of Muenster.
Some old ones now feeling their age.
On the church there were cures for poor playing,
they still hung you up in a cage.

We went to a local bistro place.
To play and eat up our tea.
Said someone, "you'll be here 'till doomsday".
We found out how right it would be.

There was Bill with banjo and Mcmoo
Who played a real mean guitar.
And Susan's real broad Scottish accent,
though we knew that she hadn't come far.

We played and we sung all the evening.
Stopping for something to eat.
That had been ordered a few hours earlier,
It was veggie, they'd run out of meat.

Now Ranks plays a real loud accordion.
A voice like an angel, Noreen.
And Letty she fiddles for Ireland.
And Bron she plays like a queen.

So off we went all ways, and homeward.
To hotels, and flats and to drink.
Talking orgasms and things like third nipples,
and toes that aren't sexy but stink.

Sunday morning arrived with a headache,
some people wanting to die.
But breakfast was really delicious.
Mein Gott, how the time had passed by.

For dinner we eat like Westphalians,
a massive assortment of food.
With coffee and beer and with water,
and everyone thought it was good.

So homeward we set on our journey,
hugging and saying goodbye.
And saying that we'd meet up sometime,
when another year has gone by.

Noreen drove the Alfa Romeo.
Like Schumakker off down the track.
We took another route quicker,
beat them by an hour or more back.

We sat like a bunch of teenagers,
Laughing, and in cyber space
Putting rubbish and really daft info
And watching the smile on Skip's face.

A first for the Mudcat café bunch.
A first time for Europe indeed.
A pimply youth couldn't hack it,
So he laughed at us all 'till he wee'd.

The boat she was new and real pretty.
We sat in the bar and we played.
One woman said, " sack 'im 'on't piano".
A drunk man said "you're IRA".

About two thirty we finished,
for we were all knackered you see.
The days had flashed by in an instant,
in Muesnter for six more and me.

I know that it's long and quite boring,
I've left out the juiciest bits,
About ******* and ******* and ********.
For those stories will have you in fits.

I hope the line separation works, if not some one clever might please split every 4 lines up, so it still makes a bit of sense.

Today has been dull and boring, flat though busy. I've done this instead of my school work and pehaps the punctuation is a bit crap, but I still have boat lag!

Perhaps there could be a groundhog day (like the film).

That could be heaven or hell depending on your point of view.

(I took my kids to the Scottish restaurant in Bury yesterday, and they appreciated MudGuard's joke. This was after trying to fly a kite with them, on the stillest day we've had for years, even at the top of my hill- lots of cries of Ohhh- Nooooooooo!!!)

He was talking about a Scottish restaurant in Munster, and I asked what it was called.

He's a dry old stick, that one! I think we were outside the shop named after the Irishman who discovered the Silk Road, Marc O'Polo (That's how it's spelt in Munster!)

Letty, I can't access that porn site at work due to anti-filth filter. Where are you taking me? Loved your fiddle playing. Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore is now Midied on my PC at home, and I finally remembered it was the Corrs first record where it is reprised. What key did you play it in, or at least what was the first note?

One of the tunes you asked the name of is Pinch of Snuff, or Four Seasons (like my pizza that wasn't). It's a killer tune. You have it in your book.

Noreen, I suspect someone is having a better time than me now, but it doesn't trouble me any more! Work sucks!

OK, after 12 hours dead to the world, and every joint in my body complaining about a debauched lifestyle at my time of life (shut up and absorb the dose of painkillers), I have a few "flashes" to share.
Noreen driving an Alfa Romeo on the fast lane of the Autobahn, singing, with Skipjack accompaying on the back seat.
The cathedral, with it's soaring architecture, backwards clock,(and the one in Wolfgang's kitchen- thought I'd had a stroke!), and the stone from Coventry cathedral, lest we forget.
The frustration of the traffic jam when we were already late for the ferry home, finally getting there to be told by a boy soldier that the ferry had gone. Ho ho, Dutch humour, had we got any milk products? Hmmm. We didn't mention the chocolate!!!
Eating fresh asparagus in a square in Munster with friends, laughing and talking. We did SO MUCH talking!!!
The spotty youth in charge of the cyber zone trying to work out why a bunch of ageing folkies were crowded around a monitor shouting "ooooh Noooo" and laughing like drains.
There's lots more, and we'll tell you all about it eventually, under the title "do you remember, when we were in Germany..........................?

So Greg- you are now convinced that no-one was having a better time than you....?

Some highlights for me of the too-short Gathering, though I keep remembering more:

Driving Skipjack's Alfa Romeo across Holland and Germany with said person playing guitar in the back seat, while Bron and I harmonised in the front
Watching a helicopter land on the deck of the Pride of Rotterdam just the other side of the sun lounge windows, as the sun went down, and speculating whether Max had arrived
Being accosted by a fellow passenger on the return ferry, who asked if we would be playing later as they had enjoyed our music so much on the outward journey
Watching fellow catters posting to the thread from the cybercafé on the boat … so now we can imagine the little grins, and Greg laughing at his own jokes as he types them in
Driving an Alfa Romeo along the autobahn ...or did I mention that?
Surviving on 3 hrs sleep a night because the company and music was so stimulating
Exploring Muenster with Wolfgang as our personal guide, watching new friends converse animatedly while walking

Will stop e'er sleep o'ertakes me at the keyboard. Grateful thanks to {{{{all involved}}}} in making this happen. :0)

Eric, now I really am shagged! Why I am still awake at this unlikely hour, after a hard days graft reclaiming bricks from rubble, and a long walk with Mrs S along the Humber bank, is beyond me.

We looked across at the Pride of Rotterdam, and the strange things Wolfgang did to the space/time continuum came back to me. I really couldn't believe we were aboard her so few earth hours before. I know these are the tricks fatigue plays, but can anyone ever have had so much in such an allegedly short time.

We'll let the nitty gritty seep out as them involved recall it, but my overiding desire is to join my many friends in saying a gargantuan thank you to Wolfgang, Petra and little Sophie for providing the co-ordinates for this wonderful collision.

I appreciate Mudcat is only in it's formative years, but I feel (and fervently hope) it will be with us for many more, and I will feel a great swelling of the chest when I let slip I was in Munster for the very first European gathering.

God bless you all, who came and shared. We have a special bond.

A great big thank you to our host Wolfgang for such a marvellous time, I hope we can get you over to England sometime for some British hospitality and even a visit to the renowned JUG.

Are we the first mudcatters to be online from sea, are we the first mudcatters to have access to a grand piano in the middle of the north sea? I should say so, yes.

What a weekend I dont think they were smuggling Cigarettes the other day, I think they were just trying to fill up the vast ammount of space in that floating palace, what a ship.

To all the weekend revellers I have some good photo's to sort out , Including Bill (pick on the melodean player's) Sables playing? you've guessed it a melodean. To everyone involved thanks for a superb 64 hours.

What a great thing! It is nice to think about Mudcat get togethers in Germany (though not so nice to realise that one couldn't go). I wonder if when Max started this if he ever dreamed he would be spawning trips to Muenster. The story about the stoneswapping between Coventry and Muenster Cathedrals is very moving. I have been in them both, and never dreamed that they would do something so nice. Cheers one up.

Hello everyone, home at last after stopping for lunch at the "in laws" and collecting the kids and all their stuff etc.

Happy birthday mcmoo! you didn't tell us on Saturday, but then you could have done after you got your starter (if you ever got it!!) So belated greetings and we'll see you in a couple of weeks.

Bleary eyed and brain dead I sit here and am still full of it, knowing that I have to start thinking about the work I have to do this evening.

The trip home was great. Cobble has washed his feet, Greg has no doubt looked at the 3rd N page and will start looking for "sexy feet" pages or perhaps others will do so for comparison!!!!!

A great big thankyou to Wolfgang for such excellent organisation, guided tours and making us feel much more than welcome in his home. Another big thankyou to Petra and Sophie for putting up with so many different strangers and sharing their home with us.

Do you know that the staff come on duty to clean the boat at 03.30hrs, I do, I was wandering around having a smoke at that time.I think for us on the boat, the length of the trip seems so much longer as we played into the night, had little sleep and a long time travelling. A week at least packed into about 72 hours

It was an awesome time. Thanks everyone.

I have finally reached home after a 2 hour wait in Shrewsbury for the train to Welshpool.
I have told the neighbours all about it, and I'll tell it all over again, with embellishments, when Jim gets home.
It has been an unique experience, and, when the participants have had some sleep, there is no doubt that there will be plenty of weirdness to go around.

There are many things from this weekend I will never forget. Here's a tiny bit which for a change has nothing to do with music: When we were in Muenster cathedral the local guide hearing the English voices asked me whether I had already shown my guests the stone from Coventry Cathedral. Now it was about my tenth time in Muenster cathedral and I hadn't seen this stone before. Muenster and Coventry cathedral have both been thorougly destroyed by air raids during the last war. They've swapped stones of the destroyed cathedrals after the war and so there is one big stone from Coventry Cathedral that has been used in the rebuilding of Muenster cathedral and vice versa.

Hi everyone - Patrish here at Bills house. I had a wonderful time in Germany and on the boat and in the car. Even though we were only in Germany for 24 hours - it felt like we were all old friends who had sung and talked together for so much longer. I can't think what else to put, except to thank Wolfgang for his warm hospitality and to send my love to all.
I don't know how many brain cells I have left - luckily the one that operates the keyboard still works

Darn! I wish I could have made it to the gathering. I've been hoping to go to Germany for years. Now I have other interests, and my wandering days are over. I'm glad you all had such a good time.
