Nutty, congratulations! Brava!

One of the pivotal moments in my smoking life came when my sister told me that I had a "smoker's voice". For some reason that struck home to me. I didn't like that thought at all, mostly because I knew exactly what she meant.

In addition, since I quit, my vocal range, even though it is still not phenomenal by any means, has definitely broadened and every little bit helps.

The part that I will always regret is that I smoked all during the years my daughter lived at home, much as she hated the habit. I think it's true that you can quit only for yourself, not because someone else wants you to, but I do wish I had given her that gift.

I am thrilled for you, and for all you others who know that your day is coming...

Ebbie

Fantastic, nutty - I've been wanting to ask but didn't dare in case you'd weakened.

You should now start to lose the characteristic look of a smoker that shows in the complexion and the eyes - it's apparently just been discovered that there's some enzyme that causes it - so you can expect to start to look healthier.

Then you can start working on becoming a really intolerant ex-smoker ........... (smug grin)

Cheers, Terry

Way to go! Best wishes for the next 25 years or so ... it gets easier after that! ;-)

I never smoked long, but since I quit so long ago, I cannot imagine taking it up again, ever. Don't kjnow what I saw in it in the first place!

Inspired by Nutty's original post (dec.13) I resolved to quit on Jan. 1st. I had quit using patches a couple of years ago and thought "I can do this any old time" 2nd time around even with patches it wasn't so easy.

I started using zyban on 11th Jan, and stopped smoking on 16th Jan. I had a couple in the first week or two but it was hard work. I can't honestly remember the last ciggy I had, but took my last pill on Fri.9th March.

I am told that I'm really lucky my doctor believed in prescribing zyban, many in the UK think it's too expensive.

There was a thread recently about 2nd chances, this is mine, I don't think I'll get a third. jeffp good luck, make it work for you too, but you have to go halfway to help it.

I was really s p a c e d out during the course and could happily watch paint dry, or muse on the beauty of doorknobs, I haven't taken a pill for nearly 3 weeks, so it should be waring off soon shouldn't it (?)

Anyway, I'll be away with the fairies now,

cheers

bill

As quitting smoking is considered by some to be more difficult than kicking a heroin addiction, you can proudly say you have the will power to achieve whatever you set your mind to, even in the unfortunate event that you resume the habit (but have faith that you won't)...aside from all the health benefits, that's probably the most important lesson to be learned.

It's truly an accomplishment that you can be proud of. You learn so much about yourself when you surmount a seemingly insurmountable obstacle.

Good on ya, Nutty! From experience, I know that the first few months are the most difficult. After that, you start noticing things- like "Hey, my lungs didn't fall out when I climbed the stairs." and " Yikes, those smokers smell bad."

Keep it up, this is a good gift you've given yourself.
Cheers, Bardford

Thanks, nutty. I've also got some friends here who have quit by using the Zyban. It's going to seem weird after 30 years, though. We've got a bunch of craft-type things lined up to occupy our hands in the evenings. I'll probably be practicing a lot more, too.

BTW, one friend says his voice has gone up in pitch since he quit smoking. Perhaps I'll regain some notes at the top of my range.

Congratulations, Nutty! The drug is called Zyban here in the US, too. I started taking it the Monday after St. Patricks Day and my wife and I have set a quit date of April 1. Success stories like yours are making me feel much better about the whole thing. Thanks so much.

Well done, Nutty, from another smoker who is supportive of those who give up.

I trust you will continue to feel sorry for those of us still addicted, and not become another intolerant ex-smoker.

Nowadays I only smoke 100pc tobacco cigars, on the basis that a chum of mine who worked in cancer research told me that there was a school of thought that considered that the additives in cigarettes and especially the paper used are more carcinogenic than the tobacco itself.

That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it!

Someone once said to me, "You don't always feel better when you give up smoking, but you feel a damned sight bloody worse when you start again!

And take it from one who's given up several times, but this time for good - Ain't that the truth!

Cheers

Well done, Nutty. Best thing for me after stopping (25 years down the line) was the ability to shrug off coughs and colds without them developing into a full blown 2 weeks off work chest infection. Sounds daft coz you need to be ill to experience it! You'll see what I mean though.

Hangovers don't seem half as bad either....;-)

I can now admit that I was smoking at least 40 cigarettes a day so the extra £200+ a month in my bank account is also a powerful reason to stay smoke free

Sorcha - there's a new drug on the market. In the UK it's called ZYBAN and it subdues the area of the brain that causes addiction

It hasn't made giving up totally pain free but has kept it at a level where I can cope

Although it would be easy to say yes to a cigarette , it's just as easy to say no

Congratulations! I smoked for almost thirty years, so I know first hand how hard it is. You'll find that every day is a little bit easier than the day before.

To all smokers: PLEASE do what ever you can to quit as soon as possible. It will be one of the best things you ever do. For yourself, and for the people that love you.

I posted a thread on Dec13th to say that I was giving up smoking and was really overwhelmed by the response I got from Mudcatters

Your encouragement and good wishes was so important in getting me through the hard times and I am pleased to report that I AM STILL A NON SMOKER

No one is more surprised that me - I had tried everything in the past with no sucess

SO - many thanks to all of you - I wouldn't dare start again now {:-)
