Subject: RE: BS: Name That Mudcatter From: Azizi Date: 27 Jun 06 - 02:09 PM I'm putting on my Ruler hat again to say that some folks are forgetting to reference the question that they are answering when they post the answer. Sometimes I can figure it out, but sometimes I can't. Am I the only one confused? Misery likes company ya know. Not to mention that Amos pulled a redsnapper with this post: Subject: RE: BS: Name That Mudcatter From: Amos - PM Date: 27 Jun 06 - 09:52 AM Which mudcatter plays with fire engines, saves lives, sings tenor and mushes huskies all in ONE lifetime!!!??? A **** If you post your name or initial after a question, that might be misconstrued as the answer to the question. Ok, maybe not in this case, but suppose there was/is a Catter named "A". We got one named "Q" ... **** So, Griok [not to pick on you by any means] but, what does this refer to "1 Is Skipjack, correctly answered" and "Correct in every respect Emma B" refer to? And Rapaire, what question does this post refer to: Righto, MMario. Amergin it was". **** Sometimes following the rules help make things easier. Subject: RE: BS: Name That Mudcatter From: Rapparee Date: 27 Jun 06 - 01:53 PM Ha! Lawrenceville is the setting for "The Lawrenceville Stories," a collection of tales about a boys' boarding school in New England. Dink Stover went there before he went to Yale about 1909. See the works of Owen Johnson. Ha! (My brother also has a harpoon. Living in the middle of Illinois he doesn't get to use it very often.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Name That Mudcatter From: Azizi Date: 27 Jun 06 - 01:51 PM Btw, I hate the small 'n' for Negroes in that last excerpt..but that's another subject... Also, the phrase "he was little affected by the foreign music that enslaved those who lived on the seaboard" is ironic. But again, that's a whole 'nother story. |
Subject: RE: BS: Name That Mudcatter From: Azizi Date: 27 Jun 06 - 01:47 PM Actually, Stephen Foster was not born in nor did he ever live in Kentucky. He is a native of Lawrenceville, a section of Pittsburgh that is indeed, a 5 minutes drive from where I live. See this excerpt: "Stephen Collins Foster (July 4, 1826 - January 13, 1864) was the pre-eminent songwriter in the United States of his era. Many of his songs, such as "Oh! Susanna", "Camptown Races" and "Beautiful Dreamer", are still popular over 150 years after their composition. Foster was born in Lawrenceville, which later became part of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and grew up as the youngest of ten children in a relatively well-off family."... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Foster Also, see this excerpt: "To America Foster has meant much. His songs are so native in their character that there need be no hesitation in stating that his was the most national expression that any of our composers has yet achieved. Born and raised here in Pittsburgh, he was little affected by the foreign music that enslaved those who lived on the seaboard. The voices Stephen heard were those of the minstrel shows, the singing and dancing of negroes on the wharves of the Ohio River, and the sentimental songs of midcentury that were carried through the country by the 'singing families' in concert and that were sung by demure young ladies who played the accompaniments on square pianos covered with brocade and lace." Lawrenceville People: Stephen Collins Foster Bottom line is Kentucky can't claim Foster. He was a Pittsburgher. |

The bonus question for the Amos' original question is; Who is the Mudcatter who designed the LFPS logo? BTW, a hint to the original question is: He has a mustachio designed for a 7 foot tall cowboy. Unfortunately it is attached to a 5 foot body. The good news is that he also has the heart of a lion in that body. |

Subject: RE: BS: Name That Mudcatter From: Rapparee Date: 27 Jun 06 - 09:09 AM Okay...I nearly met with Sorcha but we got confused over which truck stop she hung around at. But I have, in the flesh, met ONE other Mudcatter, and this 'Catter has ties to Oz. The question is: Who is the only Mudcatter who has actually met me and knows that I exist? |
Subject: RE: BS: Name That Mudcatter From: MMario Date: 27 Jun 06 - 09:04 AM Which catter owns a harpoon? My guess would be Naemanson. Name at least two 'Catters (besides myself[Rapaire]) who can play trumpet, the instrument of the angels? BARKY is one, Who is the Mudcatter you shouldn't approach with a sword (unless you really know what to do with it) Rapaire is another answer and I can't find the original question - but Rapaire would also be the mudcatter librarian in the hinterlands of the US. |
Subject: RE: BS: Name That Mudcatter From: Azizi Date: 27 Jun 06 - 08:59 AM Redsnapper, the traveler is the best judge of whether he or she is on the right track. But I have to tell you, I like the Mighty One reference. And while on one level "The Great & Mighty Azz" is complimentary, I prefer the "Great & Mighty Z". **** I can't decide whether I like the Kung Fu Grasshopper allusions, or the Wizard of Oz ones. Hey, this is the folk process at work. Mix & match! The Redsnapper meets the Great & Mighty Z!!". So Redsnapper, keep on keepin on. It's your thing. Do what you wanna do. That would be she whom I shamelessly pursue over cyber hill and dale, also know as THE FAIR ONE, also known by her Mudcat handle as alison. |
Subject: RE: BS: Name That Mudcatter From: Azizi Date: 27 Jun 06 - 08:47 AM Lin in Kansas, Your response to the Mudcatter with the one letter name is correct. However, Mo the caller gave the correct answer for "the Mudcatter who lives less than 5 minutes [drive] from Stephen Foster's home". That's little ole me and that rhymes with Z and ...whatever [I haven't figured out the rest of that song and I've even drawn a blank where the heck that ditty comes from... Anyway, few people in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and elsewhere know that Stephen Foster, composer of numerous songs including Camptown Races, and My Ole Kentucky Home lived in Pittsburgh. There is even some dispute if Foster ever traveled to the Southern part of the USA. I had mentioned that tidbit of information on a thread a while ago, and also mentioned it on this current thread that was started by another Pittsburgh area Catter: thread.cfm?threadid=92508&messages=11 |
