Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: Deckman Date: 02 Jul 03 - 05:03 PM Rick ... More CHEERS from the West Coast! Bob(deckman)Nelson ... By the way, I just got home from the Doctors clinic where they had the audacity to stick a needle into my right hip socket and shoot it full of some horrible medice. Right now, I hurt worse than I did this morning. I thought about it, and realized that I probably brought the pain on myself ... I remember trying to hit the Doctor at one very painful moment, and then I went for the nurse! And then there was the Police, and all those damned papers to sign (jail food is lousy), but now I'm home again ... looking for a new Doctor! ((I hope I gave you a chuckle)). |

Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: kytrad (Jean Ritchie) Date: 02 Jul 03 - 01:48 PM Rick- George, Jon and I send love and wishes for the best- we're just home from a month away, so I found this thread a sad surprise, but we're all impressed with your endurance and your bright spirit. A bit of positive news: George's brother-in-law finished his chemo a couple of months ago and is now "good as new," out playing golf, hiking and biking- and he's approaching 80. You'll do even better, so keep laughing (who was the famous editor who actually DID cure himself with laughter? He wrote a fine article-or book?- about it, but my aging memory won't give me his name- just now!) Some other Mudcatter will know, I'm sure. Love and blessings, Jean |
Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: Rick Fielding Date: 02 Jul 03 - 10:41 AM I spent a few days in the dreaded hospital last week and once again hooked up with a room-mate from hell (dementia AND snoring!). Feeling pretty good this week and will probably go back on the chemo...yuchhh. Glad to see Peter and also Marion, who's embarking on her cross North America journey shortly. Thanks so much for all the well-wishes. Rick |

Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 12 Jun 03 - 02:27 AM Rick, I don't wish to conduct business on your health thread, so here's a joke I didn't steal from Kendall or Amos. Murphy's about to go to Spain on vacation, and he's worried because he doesn't speak the language. So he's in the pub telling O'Brien: "Look, I'm going on vacation to Spain next week, and I don't know how I'll communicate. I don't speak the language." O'Brien says: "It's easy. When you get to Spain, just....speak....slowly. They'll understand everything." SO Murphy flies to Spain, checks into his hotel, puts his luggage in his room, and then he goes down into the lounge bar. A waiter comes over to his table, and Murphy says, "I'd....like....a....beer....please." The waiter goes and gets it. Murphy says, "Thank....you." The waiter says, "You're ....welcome. Where ....are ....you ....from?" Murphy says, "I'm ....from ....Ireland." The waiter says, "Really? .....I'm ....from ....Ireland ....too." Murphy says, "Then ......why ......are .....we .....speaking ....Spanish?" Keep at it, Rick. Seamus |
Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: hesperis Date: 11 Jun 03 - 07:48 PM Hey, about Apple's iTunes thing? CD Baby is trying to get a deal with them for featuring independent artists from CD Baby in iTunes. Not sure what the details are yet, but this could be a good thing for folk and independent artists. Oh and Rick - *hug* (and give one to Duckboots for me too) |

Subject: RE: BS: The Apple Music Store From: GUEST,Richard Date: 11 Jun 03 - 02:50 AM Art, In searching the new Apple Music Store and being able to find many old tunes the bits and pieces of which kept knocking round in my head, I couldn't find the song about the Hobo's Last Ride. Ultimately, my search lead me to you. The apple site is great way to get the music you want, if it is there. It seems the folk section is a little thin, especially when it comes to railroad songs. Could you or some of your friends link up Apple with whoever they need to get your recordings on the web site. I would buy some. Thanks, RD Foley 32 years on the SP |

Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: Art Thieme Date: 10 Jun 03 - 03:06 PM Uh, Rick, the catheter sure beat waking up in four inches of warm liquid sunk inside a swail in the middle of the bed. THAT is hard to take at age 62. Now there is medication, and thank God for the catheters. I now put a big smiley face on my stomach and hope not to explode. Yeah, MS can be a bitch and a half----but with MS, like insanity, once you get used to it, insanity can be the most normally sane thing in the world ;-) Fight on!!!!!!!!! Art |
Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: MMario Date: 10 Jun 03 - 02:26 PM God help me if I ever go on chemo - I drink about 4 quarts or more of water a day under normal conditions - it's not unusual for me to polish off 4 quarts with a meal...(especially if I have been working outdoors) |

Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: dick greenhaus Date: 09 Jun 03 - 07:32 PM Let's see- 8 glasses is 64 fluid ounces, or a half-a-glass more than 3 imperial pints. I've been known to meet or exceed that. Unless, of course, they're imperial glasses... |
Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: Walking Eagle Date: 09 Jun 03 - 06:05 PM Ain't it though? My wizard ( chemo doc ) told me that anything is acceptable to drink as long as it has no caffein and agrees with me. Thank gawd I'm on a chemo regimen that is very specific and has no real bad side effects. But my friend, I have BTDT with the side effects crap. I KNOW how it is Rick! I SEE you, my friend. If you ever want to vent to someone who knows the chemo lingo and has had the 2:00AM frights, feel free to send me a PM and we'll get through it. Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: Rick Fielding Date: 09 Jun 03 - 10:59 AM Good grief Art! Bag? Yellow liquid? Smiley Face? Did I get something confused here?! What I'm dealing with is bad enough, but if it comes down to a catheter to remove stuff, I'll be ready for the gas pipe, Ha ha! I went through that for a few days last year when I was in the hospital, and it is SERIOUSLY unpleasant. Boy, this is a drag, but I sure appreciate the support. Cheers Rick |
Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: black walnut Date: 09 Jun 03 - 08:46 AM Drink it straight from the lake, Rick. No sugar....lots of flavour! ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: Marion Date: 09 Jun 03 - 02:10 AM If the amount of sugar you're consuming by drinking that much juice is a concern (and I have no idea if it is or not, I'm just saying IF), another thing you could try is making dilute ice tea (herbal or decaf). I use one teabag for a 2L bottle of water and find that this subtle flavouring makes it easier for me to drink lots of water. Marion |
Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: Art Thieme Date: 09 Jun 03 - 12:08 AM Rick, When your bag gets sort of full, just take a permanent marker and draw a smiley face on it. The yellow liquid behind the smile is certain to intrigue and fascinate children and adults of all ages----especially if the bag is one of those round ones. I did this in St. Mary's Hospital at Mayo Clinic and gained a certain fame around there. ;-) Art |

Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: Annie Date: 08 Jun 03 - 05:23 PM Rickster and Heather: Whoa!! Big job taking those treatments. We gotcha covered with prayers and thoughts for licking this. Eight glasses a day, huh? They (who are 'they' anyway?) used to tell us women to do that, and we all did, - for at least a week! I start drinking 8 glasses every day. I just forget to finish. I'll make it through 8 tomorrow so I can remember just how much water that is!! Love ya, Annie |

Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: katlaughing Date: 08 Jun 03 - 12:22 AM I do two quarts a day, at least, Rick, but that's all I drink and I like water.:-) I load up a quart sippie with ice and water, keep adding water and just sip throughout the day. Seems to work better than trying to down one 8 ounce glass at a time, physically and psychologically. fwiw*bg* |
Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: GUEST,Arnie Date: 07 Jun 03 - 11:15 PM 8 glasses of water! there's a song in that. You'd better keep the banjo by the toilet just in case. Get well my friend |
Subject: RE: BS: Rick's health Update From: Rick Fielding Date: 07 Jun 03 - 10:23 PM One of the more irritating little things is that while I'm on the chemo I HAVE to drink 8 glasses of water a day. I have not been a good boy about this, starting to gag by about the fifth one. Seem to have solved the problem today.....it's Welch's grape juice and a third water.....much more palatable, and surprise surprise, I had twice the amount of energy today than I've had in the last month. Hope it keeps up. Cheers Rick |
