Jean, was that Norman Cousins? Also a movie about the story, Anatomy of an Illness. I loved the movie; Norman's role was played by Lou Grant.

Rick, I was thinking about you Sunday. Don't know why, just enjoying the summer landscape and gardens.

Rick ... More CHEERS from the West Coast! Bob(deckman)Nelson ... By the way, I just got home from the Doctors clinic where they had the audacity to stick a needle into my right hip socket and shoot it full of some horrible medice. Right now, I hurt worse than I did this morning. I thought about it, and realized that I probably brought the pain on myself ... I remember trying to hit the Doctor at one very painful moment, and then I went for the nurse! And then there was the Police, and all those damned papers to sign (jail food is lousy), but now I'm home again ... looking for a new Doctor! ((I hope I gave you a chuckle)).

Rick- George, Jon and I send love and wishes for the best- we're just home from a month away, so I found this thread a sad surprise, but we're all impressed with your endurance and your bright spirit.

A bit of positive news: George's brother-in-law finished his chemo a couple of months ago and is now "good as new," out playing golf, hiking and biking- and he's approaching 80. You'll do even better, so keep laughing (who was the famous editor who actually DID cure himself with laughter? He wrote a fine article-or book?- about it, but my aging memory won't give me his name- just now!) Some other Mudcatter will know, I'm sure.

Love and blessings,   Jean

I spent a few days in the dreaded hospital last week and once again hooked up with a room-mate from hell (dementia AND snoring!). Feeling pretty good this week and will probably go back on the chemo...yuchhh. Glad to see Peter and also Marion, who's embarking on her cross North America journey shortly. Thanks so much for all the well-wishes.

Rick, I don't wish to conduct business on your health thread, so here's a joke I didn't steal from Kendall or Amos.

Murphy's about to go to Spain on vacation, and he's worried because he doesn't speak the language. So he's in the pub telling O'Brien: "Look, I'm going on vacation to Spain next week, and I don't know how I'll communicate. I don't speak the language."
O'Brien says: "It's easy. When you get to Spain, just....speak....slowly. They'll understand everything."
SO Murphy flies to Spain, checks into his hotel, puts his luggage in his room, and then he goes down into the lounge bar.
A waiter comes over to his table, and Murphy says, "I'd....like....a....beer....please."
The waiter goes and gets it.
Murphy says, "Thank....you."
The waiter says, "You're ....welcome. Where ....are ....you ....from?"
Murphy says, "I'm ....from ....Ireland."
The waiter says, "Really? .....I'm ....from ....Ireland ....too."
Murphy says, "Then ......why ......are .....we .....speaking ....Spanish?"

Keep at it, Rick.

Seamus

Hey, about Apple's iTunes thing? CD Baby is trying to get a deal with them for featuring independent artists from CD Baby in iTunes. Not sure what the details are yet, but this could be a good thing for folk and independent artists.

Oh and Rick - *hug* (and give one to Duckboots for me too)

Richard, Hello.

My 2 records for FOLK LEGACY are available as CDs now. You can get them from them at www.folklegacy.com   "The Hobos Last Ride" is on one titled THAT'S THE TICKET.

My latest CD---1998---is available from WATERBUG RECORDS at www.waterbug.com

The 2 LPs I did in the 70s for Kicking Mule are now owned by Fantasy Records and they won't be issuing them until I croak.

A cassette called ON THE RIVER is available from Folk Legacy too.

And one of these days, well, who knows ?

Thanks,

Art Thieme

I'm late in offering my best wishes, though Jennifer did it earlier, but it occurs to me that I'm supposed to get you to make me a guitar strap, for last Christmas, I think it was to have been, so don't go getting too weak to make a nice tooled strap for my fancy guitar!

Seriously, when you get to where you could start on same, let me know, and we'll discuss details (like what to put on it, how long is should be, price, etc.). My email is songuitar@starpower.net, 'cause I can have Mudcat messages waiting months before I ever notice they're there.

Art, In searching the new Apple Music Store and being able to find many old tunes the bits and pieces of which kept knocking round in my head, I couldn't find the song about the Hobo's Last Ride. Ultimately, my search lead me to you. The apple site is great way to get the music you want, if it is there. It seems the folk section is a little thin, especially when it comes to railroad songs. Could you or some of your friends link up Apple with whoever they need to get your recordings on the web site. I would buy some. Thanks, RD Foley 32 years on the SP

"Oh, sure thing," he replies. "Every morning, 7:00 sharp".

"Well, that's very good!" says the doc.

Uh, Rick, the catheter sure beat waking up in four inches of warm liquid sunk inside a swail in the middle of the bed. THAT is hard to take at age 62. Now there is medication, and thank God for the catheters. I now put a big smiley face on my stomach and hope not to explode. Yeah, MS can be a bitch and a half----but with MS, like insanity, once you get used to it, insanity can be the most normally sane thing in the world ;-)

Fight on!!!!!!!!!

Let's see-
8 glasses is 64 fluid ounces, or a half-a-glass more than 3 imperial pints. I've been known to meet or exceed that. Unless, of course, they're imperial glasses...

Ain't it though? My wizard ( chemo doc ) told me that anything is acceptable to drink as long as it has no caffein and agrees with me. Thank gawd I'm on a chemo regimen that is very specific and has no real bad side effects. But my friend, I have BTDT with the side effects crap. I KNOW how it is Rick! I SEE you, my friend.

If you ever want to vent to someone who knows the chemo lingo and has had the 2:00AM frights, feel free to send me a PM and we'll get through it.

Good grief Art! Bag? Yellow liquid? Smiley Face? Did I get something confused here?!

What I'm dealing with is bad enough, but if it comes down to a catheter to remove stuff, I'll be ready for the gas pipe, Ha ha!

I went through that for a few days last year when I was in the hospital, and it is SERIOUSLY unpleasant.

Boy, this is a drag, but I sure appreciate the support.

Cheers

If the amount of sugar you're consuming by drinking that much juice is a concern (and I have no idea if it is or not, I'm just saying IF), another thing you could try is making dilute ice tea (herbal or decaf). I use one teabag for a 2L bottle of water and find that this subtle flavouring makes it easier for me to drink lots of water.

Rick,

When your bag gets sort of full, just take a permanent marker and draw a smiley face on it. The yellow liquid behind the smile is certain to intrigue and fascinate children and adults of all ages----especially if the bag is one of those round ones. I did this in St. Mary's Hospital at Mayo Clinic and gained a certain fame around there.

One of the more irritating little things is that while I'm on the chemo I HAVE to drink 8 glasses of water a day. I have not been a good boy about this, starting to gag by about the fifth one. Seem to have solved the problem today.....it's Welch's grape juice and a third water.....much more palatable, and surprise surprise, I had twice the amount of energy today than I've had in the last month. Hope it keeps up.

Cheers
