There are some changes to the programme (all positive, as far as I can tell). Now I have a Sunday concert (sharing bill with Devil's Interval, great!), and the Saturday "Teatime with..." is moved to Monday, plus 1 hour with Lester Simpson and the Songwriters' concert on Monday. But I'll be there from Saturday, and sticking my nose wherever I can. Also, checking the programme for the three days I'll be there, it looks like I'll be running like a headless chicken from venue to venue trying to catch so many wonderful acts.

I am a Sidmouth virgin, and particularly glad to hear it isn't as hilly as Whitby (not many places are, I guess).

What's the water like, Lizzie? Sandy underfoot, rocky or pebbly? Shall I bring my trunks and raise the sea level, or will I come out full of sea urchins and seaweed?

Lizzie

Must remember Sun Cream.

Don't want to swim so won't need me cozzie. And Middlebar people swim and sing in their yellow T shirts anyway.

If it is wet enough for wellies and brollies I'll stay in the pub

I'll be there from Tuesday (working on the campsite or somewhere)

Arriving in Sidmouth on Thursday afternoon, and camping on the main field at Kingsdown Tail.

I usually get into the Bedford for an impromptu session on Thursday evening. Colin, the landlord, is quite keen on having a little get together as a rule.

So if anyone wants to join in, do come along.

I'll be there on Friday too, from 11am, meeting and greeting.

Not long now.

I am digusted by this comment from "GUEST,Guest". If anyone does know who this is I suggest they give this person a good talking to there is no need to be so agressive on a thread about a folk festival. All the back and forth arguments further up this therad are unnecessary and if people want to swear at other please be vaguely polite and use *****. It is not pleasant!

Now I've had my moan.............

I will unfortunately not be able to attend the whole thing this year although wild horses wouldn't stop me from making it for the singing in the sea on Thursday with Teddy in tow.

I look forward to seeing you all there. (apart from GUEST,Guest)

Love to all

George

If it was a lorry it would now be called 'The Vauxhaul'. You don't need a premises licence with permission for music on a moving lorry mind you. Still - hope you like late nights Kevin, Bedford sessions are like that.

I shall also be at Sidmouth (for the first few days at least).

John Barden tells me that the singarounds in the Bedford are excellent so I shall no doubt end up there, although I have to admit to being a little wary of singing inside a lorry!

The sidholme was originally going to be part of the festival but the 'trustees' of the hotel decided not to move forwards due to probably licensing problems. The working programme will flag up 2 new evening concert venues for people .... please read before slagging off!

Here is the text from an email of about a week ago as sent by one of the senior organisers. Interpret it as you will!! I only offered to help before the festival so maybe the need is for more stewards during the festival. But what sort of stewards???

Hi Stephen

Because of changes to the law and new codes of practice on venue security we're going to have to have different sorts of stewards this year.

We've be in touch with most applicants now and anyone left will hear from us very soon.

Thanks for your offer. I hope we've got everything covered now, but if not I know who to ask!

Latest internet newsletter states STEWARDS STILL WANTED (large RED letters too) but who knows what the truth is?

Following the article in last week's local paper, the organisers have been innundated with offers of local accommodation for artistes - maybe the mention of £35 per night (above the going rate for B&B) had something to do with it?

Finally, what a disappointment that the Sidholme hotel music room is not included as a venue for the social dancing - the venues in the working programme are now the same as last year, including the dreary youth centre at Manstone. All three venues are therefore a long way out of town - once again giving the feeling of 'two festivals' that was a prominent criticism of last year.

As you can see from the newspaper article in the connection above, the folk festival is short of stewards and they need all the help they can get. I have checked back with my friend and he has confirmed this. He also said the person saying they have enough already is probably mischief making, though why they would want to do that is beyond me.

Quatered? As in Quatermass and the Pit? (You have to be of a certain age to know about this - I was too young, but tried to watch it between the banisters when no-one was looking!)
I thought Rattling was for snakes, bogs, Roaring Robin, gold jewellery, etc.

Bollocks, most of what happens in the folk world is driven by nothing but enthusiasm and love for the music.

Rattling a collection tin is certainly illegal - and that goes for buckets too. All that is allowed is to stand quietly, looking meek and deserving. You can be arrested for any display of enthusiasm for a cause. After all, this is England, Land of the Free. Heaven knows what happens nowadays to people who try to take out a library book using the wrong ticket. Never seen again I guess.

Steve,
The appeals for more stewards have reached as far as Edinburgh! I have bought a season ticket and CAN'T commit to the stated requirement of 4-5 hours a day as I am staying with elderly in-laws. Like you, I'm happy to do what I can, and have rattled collecting tins in the past (although I was told rattling is illegal!!)

And an umbrella, just in case.

GUEST cannot be right that anyone and everyone can be a steward - stewards mean free season tickets, and free tickets mean lost revenue. Some festivals pick and choose from too many applicants. Others always need more. Strange.

Sidmouth would welcome, I am sure, offers of help ad-hoc from people who have bought a ticket. That is what I have done - give the festival the cash they need and offer to help out as well.

I've had quite a few complaints that the organisers don't answer emails especially about stewarding and campsite arrangements but it is all now being sorted out - just too much to do at once I guess.

New laws apparently mean that stewards need qualifications (a working brain and some common sense?). Offered to help but told they have everything covered. Weather at present is HOT and getting HOTTER. Wall to wall sunshine and sparkles for Lizzie. If this keeps up, bring your desert survival kit.

If I could just correct the slightly misleading statement above. Sidmouth is not "very short" of stewards. They are merely ensuring they have plenty of reserves with a wide range of skills and that in the case of some stewards not turning up, for whatever reason (as happens with all festivals) that there are more than enough people on hand to cover.

Anyone wanting to be a steward will be welcome, as the more willing and helpful hands there are to share the load, the better for everyone. You can also have your name added to the database for future years, should you want to.

So, many thanks for your concern 'Guest folkfreak' but I thought it better to let you know the situation, there's no need to panic, but help will be much appreciated for the reasons stated above. Here's the site with all details on.

Just had a short holiday locally and heard that the Sidmouth Folk Week is very short of stewards, if they don't find more helpers before the start of the folk week, some events are in danger of being cancelled. Insurance cover will be invalid if adequate staffing can't be provided. See the website for details.

It is strange to read some of the comments - although I was in Sidmouth for the whole week in 05 I was rushing from one place to another and having the best time ever, and did not have to pay to get in anywhere.

I supose everyone has their own folk week and they are all different.

This time it seems I have to try to fit in making Border Morris tatters and getting a kilt finished in my spare time. (I have spare time? Thats news to me.)

At least the man I spoke to at the Rugby club offered to let me plug my CPAP machine into their mains at the club house this year. Maybe they were worried about finding I had expired during the week - I have sleep apnoea and the machine keeps an airway open for me. I can use an inverter and car battery for a weekend, but a week is pushing it.
One less thing to worry about.
Missing Sidmouth due to untimely death is not on my list of things to do.

I can't wait for my annual injection of joy from the man with the very large trousers and several dozen morris sides - it all whizzes by in a blur of hanging baskets and suppers in the White Horse Cafe.
Oh for a crab sarnie, a distant fiddle tune and an afternoon nap in Blackmore Gardens.

Rather too late to advertise it this year - but if anyone fancies a basic caravan instead of their tent, this link may help - also if anyone wants to pitch their caravan or motorcamper within a minute's walk of the Sidford village hall used for some of the social dances, then see the other link.

Memo to Lizzie: I know it's going to be good weather Lizzie, so I guess there is no need for a waterproof caravan...

I think, in this heat, the Lemonade Lady could sell out in an hour! PHEW!! My mouth's watering now as well.....

And Cat, will certainly do that. Been over to your site....lovely 'friends' you have over there! ;0) Great to see SoH and Siddy Folk Week in Myspace at long last isn't it!

You come and say hello too, if it's still this hot I'll be tucked deep into a bush somewhere....I've come to the conclusion that my cats have the right answer to keep cool....although those chappies who had their deck-chairs sat in the sea yesterday, whilst swigging their beer from their ice-packs, looked VERY cool!

Perhaps that's where The Lemonade Lady should be this year....in the sea...then we'd just have to stagger over to her from our Mermaid Chairs.
