Homage to Lillian Shedd McMurry, the blues producer (Trumpet Records) who died on March 18, aged 77. She was practically unique in the business, because she was a white woman, and she was honest. When she was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame last year, it was noted that she had been scrupulous in paying and repaying royalties to her artists. She started out working with her husband in his furniture stores in Jackson, Miss., and one day in 1949, found this old stack of records, put on "All She Wants to do is Rock" by Wynonie Harris, and was hooked. Within a year, she had turned one of the furniture stores into a recording studio. Her main artist was Sonny Boy Williamson (the second SBW), who she kept out of all kinds of trouble, and eventually paid for his tombstone. Thanks to Lillian, we have SBW and Elmore James' "Dust My Broom". So I guess she was a sung blues heroine after all.
