Travelodges are OK if you take advantage of the cheap rates they sometimes offer, as Anahata (treewind) says. The main problem with many of them is that they are not within walking distance of any decent pubs (or even any indecent ones ;-)), as they tend to be near motorways, etc.

So it's good to hear of one that is! Thanks for the tip-off, sapper82.

My advice is to avoid the one on the M4 near Swansea - the worst ever, IMO. We got no sleep at all because a bunch of people (we suspected they were drug dealers) in one room played loud 'rave' type music (or whatever it's called), with people coming and going, literally all night (their customers, if our theory is correct). There was supposed to be a security guard but there was no sign of him (or her). The reception desk was closed the next day (Sunday) so we couldn't say anything at the time, so we wrote a letter, and got the response "you should have told the security guard or reported it to reception". I had to write again, asking if they had read my letter properly, as I had explained all the above in it. Eventually we got a free voucher which we used in a quieter location later :-)

Sorry for the thread creep - but heed the warning! :-)

That wouldn't be far from the Stonham Magpie, where I believe there's a music session from time to time. Grab a copy of Mardles and check the listings pages.

I like Travelodges, especially when we get get one of those cheap rooms - down to a tenner sometimes!

With there VERY basic facilities, I, and my collegues at work, view Travelodges as little more than up-market doss-houses, only to be used as a last resort. However, I have actually found one that I do not mind staying in!
Why? Location, Location, Location! Because just up the road from the Ipswich Beacon Hill Travelodge at the A14/A140 roundabout there is a very nice little pub that serves a decent pint of Woodforde's or Adnam's and delivers some EXCELLENT food.
Not only this, but, as there is no juke box and little piped Muzak, the landlord, when things are quiet, is more than happy for customers to spontainiously entertain themselves by playing or singing! He even tollerated me performing on the gob harp and tin whistle!
Called The Highwayman, you follow the A140 from Beacon Hill roundabout towards Norwich for about a mile and it is just on the brow of the hill, tucked in on the left just before the end of the dual carriageway section.
Don't go too fast or you'll miss it!
