Subject: RE: BS: 'The Boys and Girl From County Clare' From: JJ Date: 27 Mar 07 - 09:27 AM I'm probably one of the few people who saw it in a movie theatre. It ran for a couple of weeks in NYC. Originally THE BOYS FROM COUNTY CLARE; they threw in the "AND GIRL" for the American audience. Loved it... |

Subject: RE: BS: 'The Boys and Girl From County Clare' From: Mickey191 Date: 27 Mar 07 - 01:13 AM Rich, After I missed a few lines I turned the captions on. One line that knocked me out--"Sure, he's got no hair on his knees." BUT-I don't know if they were referring to a constant prayer OR something entirely different & not so angelic. Kat, I found only the very short thread that fretless mentioned. Only 3 or 4 posts from a couple of yrs. ago. Michael, I guess we may be thinking the same thing-about why shoot it on the Isle of Man. Perchance to keep the money in the British Empire. Just an aside; the credits were almost the longest I've ever seen. |

Subject: RE: BS: 'The Boys and Girl From County Clare' From: michaelr Date: 27 Mar 07 - 12:57 AM I haven't been able to find it in our local video dispensaries. Hmmph... And why are films set in Ireland being filmed on the Isle of Man? (Wait, I think I know the answer.) Slan, Michael |

Subject: RE: BS: 'The Boys and Girl From County Clare' From: katlaughing Date: 27 Mar 07 - 12:07 AM I coulda sworn we had a long thread about this, but I cannot find it, now. It wasn't the one fretless linked to. Anyway, we rented it based on Mudcatters' recommendations and enjoyed it very much. |

Subject: RE: BS: 'The Boys and Girl From County Clare' From: GUEST,Rich (bodhránai gan cookie) Date: 26 Mar 07 - 05:42 PM Saw it a while ago. Enjoyed it immensely but thetre are a lot of inside jokes that someone not familiar with traditional Irish music wouldn't get. For example, the piper taking forever to get ready, the lack of respect for the box player, the van load of people playing bodhrán around one lone fiddler, the one céilí band leader commenting to the girl who played the "bad-ran" that "I bet you know all the tunes". "Play the tune, not around the tune. Leave the jazz to the Beatles". .... Still, a great movie. Rich |

Subject: BS: 'The Boys and Girl From County Clare' From: Mickey191 Date: 26 Mar 07 - 03:53 PM "The Boys And The Girls From County Clare" Saw this wonderful movie the other night . I'm telling everyone about it-even if they're not Irish. The story concerns the McMahon Bros. & their lifelong musical rivalry with eachother. They each have a ceili* band, which seems to be the main focus of their lives. They meet again at the All Ireland Traditional Music Competition. The Irish wit is there, some nice scenery, (filmed on the Isle of Man) a couple of love stories--BUT the star is the great music. The term feel good movie applies. The ending is a lovely and funny unexpected surprise. * Célli-Céilldh-Céilidh=all accepted terms. That's according to Wikepedia |
