Ooooooh - don't go on about cheap or free weekends in some circles here, John. How do you expect folk music to survive if you don't pay the going rate. Anything free must be rubbish. Artists have mortgages to pay as well. Etc. Etc. (Not me talking - just overheard on other threads!)

Just got back from the Railway in Whitby, great singing, good company and there probably were some musicians sessions but I didn't hear them!

Just got back from the Anchor Inn at High Offley, Staffordshire. Excellent beer, good music and singing, great company - oh, and cheap!

I'd venture to suggest that by "session", most of us understand that to mean a 'tune session' as you put it. Even Snuffy himself (in the Upton thread) says :

"Always lots of fringe at Upton, John - just about every pub has sessions or singing. Come and join us. " - sessions OR singing. Snuffy - may well join you for a tune (or a song) at Upton :-)

Terry - if I find myself at a loose end I might drive down for a session - only an hour or so to much of Cheshire from here. Do you have any idea where it will be on which night? Or maybe we could swap mobnile phone numbers and get in touch? Anywhere to stay?

It's a singaround but if someone has a tune based on Lust and Depravity they would always be asked to play it! If you go to Clennelhallhotel.com and look at the festival pages there's allsorts going on and on the last page it says there are rooms available for sessions, workshops etc.
Sounds a really good weekend and the Hotel itself looks beautiful - there's even a course fishing lake within 3 miles so my partner can go and enjoy himself while I do the Lust and Depravity!!

Thanks folks, very helpful. Mr Red has proved himself a fine chap with all sorts of practical suggestions.

If we can't get into anything this weekend we'll go to the Anchor Inn @ High Offley in Staffordshire. Although I've not been for a while, it's a splendid pub in the finest tradition of 'proper' pubs. Most weekends would see a bunch of musicians & singers descend on the place for some great sessions.

Carol: the Norwell Happening is a lovely do, we went last year and we'll certainly be there this year.

It's a bit too late I would think to organise camping near Whitby for the fringe of the Moor and coast weekend but how about these as fee or nearly free!

19th May York day of Folk
26th May Norwell Happening
8th - 10th Robin hoods Bay Free apart from camping I think or Blaydon £25 per ticket - no conc. for unwaged but not a bad price for a weekend
15 - 17th Beverley fringe free but camping hard to find
22nd - 24th June Croxdale Traditional Music, Durham, £10 per van for camping
Thursday 19th until 23rd July Staithes Weekend £22 camping for the 4 nights
Durham Folk Party 27 - 29th July cost about £10 per person including camping I think
10th - 12th August Yorkshire Traditional voices weekend about £12 per ticket including camping
And then Whitby fringe!

There will (I HOPE) be live music in a few pubs on the Cheshire Ring
Saturday Sunday and Monday (and the rest of the week). We Start at Middlewich and are travelling anti clockwise !

If you make it to the states, Cinco de Mayo* is celebrated all over!
*It commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862 on the 5th of May.

Norwell was the first of the free events we went to last year - and what a wonderful time we had! We were made to feel very welcome, even though none of the Norwell regulars knew us. Lots of singing, too much drinking, excellent company - and loads of fun. See you at the end of May.

John If you are an Old time music player there is a get together of FOAOTMAD. Friends of old time American music and dance. at Sewerby park just above Bridlington. However it's mostly session tunes and not much singing. Cheers Oombanjo

Last year we spent much of the summer going to festivals, many of them 'free'. They seemed to entail an organiser sorting a suitable campsite (near a decent pub) and then inviting singers, musicians, audience etc to attend. Mr Happy runs a successfull bash in Derbyshire (unfortunatley we had to miss his recent do). These were really great fun and we'd love to try some more.

Does anyone know of any such events - ideally in Northern England?
