Back track again, Simpson's "New Bouree" isn't the one in the Dancing Master, and he say that ballads calling for "New Bory" don't fit the Dancing Master one which was also called "Indian Queen". No ballads call for the "Indian Queen".

I goofed, as "The New Bouree" the "Indian Queen" is in Simpson and is B320 on my website. And there are a few songs to it under the "New Bory" title.

Golly, you guys, it took me half an hour to find this tune because the tunefinder isn't working. I hope it's not permanently out of commission. When you're talking about a song, it's really nice if you can post the song, a link, or at least an URL so the rest of us know what's going on. I feel a little guilty about sneaking links into your posts, Bruce, but I feel it's for the "common good." Hope you don't mind.
I found "Shinkin" (B345) on Bruce's Web site and linked to it, but not "Indian Queen." Simpson's British Broadside Ballad and Its Music refers to "Indian Queen," but doesn't give the tune, either. HELP!!!

The "Indian Queen" in the 'Dancing Master' from the 11th edition had first appeared in the 9th edition as "The new Boree". "Of noble race was Shenkin" takes its title from a song by Thomas D'Urfey, 1693, with tune not found earlier, and compoer unknown. (Tune B345 on my website)

No Art it wasn't a riverboat named after a gay sioux indian...I wondered about this melody, a very lively tune from "The English Dancing Master" 1st ed. 1651 by John Playford (1623-1686) while thinking about old old folk tunes. Do any of our scholars know more about it? I imagined a fiddle tune known to many currently would have a similar melody...can anyone tell me more about it and the companion tune "Of noble race was Shinkin"? harpgirl
