Subject: Tech: Open Source sound samples and soundfonts From: GUEST Date: 13 Jul 07 - 07:03 AM I was looking for public domain soundfonts to use with Timidity and while there are a lot of free ones, I was surprised by how few soundfonts were really public domain. While searching, I ran across this web site: http://freepats.opensrc.org/ They are working on collecting Open Source instrument samples for use in music composition. Once they have some quality wave files, they can be converted into various formats to be used with music composition software. If anyone can help them out by recording some instrument samples, please do so. It looks like a very worthwhile project. The results are usuable by everyone for music composition for personal, public performance or commercial purposes. Mudcat has a lot of midi versions of their songs as do many other great music sites run by posters to Mudcat forums. It would be great to have some good instruments sounds to hear when those midi files are played back and a program like Timidity (http://ocmnet.com/saxguru/Timidity.htm) with some good sf2 files is one effective way to do that. Hope some of you will get involved in the project or at least check out some of their sound files and tools. Thanks. |
