E-mail off to a fellow in Oz who works in this area of the music field. He hadn't heard of it but will forward the e-mail to some friends of his who MAY have heard of it. I'll let ya know if/when.

So far just the one reference from someone in 2004 on another site. Wondering if we'll have to wait for Bob Coltman or one of the other Ozites.

In a query, it was called a hill billy song and said to have been popular in Australia. This may be a clue. Peace?

Who wrote/recorded this oldie - it may be in data base already?

As through a country village
I chanced to pass one day
A broken hearted woman
A mother old and grey
She stopped me as I passed her
And said so plaintively
Are you from the city
You look like you may be

I told her I had travelled
To see my daughter there
The tears came down like raindrops
Her face was lined with care
I guess your daughters here Sir
But mine is far away
And that is why I stopped you
As you passed by today

If you should see my daughter
Please tell her to come home
Her mother's heart is broken
Since she has gone to roam
Oh send her to me quickly
And tell her not to wait
I"m getting old and feeble
And she might come too late

probably more verses?
