Subject: RE: Lancashire UK - Digging up old Folkies From: GUEST,Penny Black Date: 15 Sep 07 - 05:44 PM Thanks Paul! Actually John was 52 and I was in my Mid 40's at the first Gig - so we were "Youngish" I still have one of the old Gourd banshaws that I played at the event, John and I made a couple based on a design given to us by a young coloured lad who had just been released from slavery by some new government act - it only had four strings so we added another - seemed a shame to waste a digit! A few years after, about 1910 I went to a mates child's christening, the kid was called Joel and I gave him the spare bandshaw as a present (I wonder if he ever learned to play it?) His dad was a great laugh and we all called him "Todd" due to his surname being Sweeney. Had some bad news today from Thwaites; They have decided not to celebrate another anniversary after this one until they reach 500, so it looks like we're going to be laid off for a bit :0( Take care - Pete and John |

Subject: Lancashire UK - Digging up old Folkies From: GUEST,Penny Black Date: 14 Sep 07 - 06:40 AM seen on the "Net" "Two Hundred Year Old Thwaites" Thwaites Brewery based in Lancashire, UK reach their 200th year Anniversary in 2007. Celebrations will abound in every Thwaites serving pub in the The UK with visitors coming from all around the world to taste their fine ales and join the Party Mood. Blackpool's favourite Traditional Pub (Home of Blackpool Folk Club) The Clarence, Preston New Road, has pulled the biggest draw of all. Through major archive research, they have established that "Penny Black" were the band that played at the original opening of Thwaites Brewery in 1807 and returned to celebrate its first Hundred years in 1907 further enquires revealed that Penny Black had retired to Blackpool. Having tracked down these two old Folkies, they then convinced them to come along to the Clarence on the 19th September 2007 to sing and be the Guests at the Celebrations which will start at 8.00pm with traditional "Night Morris Clog Dancing" in the car park (A tradition that is dying off due to the shortage of Morris's to dance on) John Bond & Pete Skinner aka "Penny Black" have said how pleased they were to have performed at The Opening of Thwaites Brewery in 1807 and then again to celebrate its 100th Year celebration in 1907 But "This is the icing on the cake" said Pete "3 bookings in a row must be a record it feels like regular work is coming our way at last" For those wishing to see 2 Hundred Year Old Thwaites performances, The Clarence will be opening its door wide on 19th September from 8pm but would request Traditional Lancashire Clothes be the garb of the day (there will be a prize) - Penny Black will also be holding a prize quiz from their years of knowledge obtained whilst pottering around Lancashire.. Come along and have a fun night.... |
