There were doubts this one would register anywhere.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

sung as a mother's-lulaby in youth and in olden age by youth with truth.

This was sung in central/Western New York as well,
identical chorus and similar verses. I'll try to
find my copy and post any alternate words I find.

It's a fun song, which I've been meaning to learn.
Thanks for reminding me.

cheers, Pamela

GET AWAY, OLD MAN, GET AWAY
(Frank Crumit)
As recorded by Vernon Dalhart, 1927.

1. Now listen all you maidens about to choose a man:
Don't take one who is ancient; get a young one if you can.

CHORUS: For an old man he is old, for an old man he is gray,
But a young man's heart is full of love; get away, old man, get away.

2. If you marry an old man, now list to what I say,
You're sure to meet a young man who will steal your heart away. CHORUS

3. Be sure to get a young man with a red and rosy cheek.
Don't get a man with a cane in his hand whose back is very weak. CHORUS

4. I'd rather marry a young man with his pockets lined with silk
Than to marry an old man with a hundred cows to milk. CHORUS

5. I'd sooner marry a young man with an apple in his hand
Than to marry an old man with a hundred acres o' land. CHORUS

6. Don't ever marry an old man and here's the reason why:
His lips are all tobacco juice, and his chin is never dry. CHORUS

Get away, get away, get away.
Get away, get away, get away.
Shoo, fly; don't bother me.
Shoo, fly; don't bother me.
Get away, old man, get away.

Something like this.....
Now listen all you maidens, pay heed to what I say,
Don't ever marr an old man, choose a young man every day,

CH For an old man he is old,
For an old man he is grey,
But a young man's heart is full of love,
Get away, old man, get away!

Don't ever marry an old man, for when the winter's cold,
A nice warm place to put your feet is better far than gold.

Ch

Don't ever marry an old man who's got the rheumatiz,
You'll have to rub his creaking joints, if that aint work, what is?

CH

Don't ever marry an old man, and here's the reason why,
His lips are all tobacco juice and his chin is never dry

CH

Probably more, but that's all I can remember

A snippet from a song chorus - perhaps, circa 1880-1910 western USA.

For an old man is old,
And an old man is grey
But a young man's heart is full of love
Go away old man, go away.

Know the tune....it was sung to me hundreds of times....but only the chorus.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle
