Subject: RE: Time Bandits Ceilidh 9 Feb 2008 Earl of Stamford From: Mo the caller Date: 18 Feb 08 - 03:45 AM That's weddings for you. Completely unpredictable. The worst is calling with a band who don't want to play tunes unless there are people dancing. |

Subject: RE: Time Bandits Ceilidh 9 Feb 2008 Earl of Stamford From: Bernard Date: 15 Feb 08 - 02:37 PM This was also commented upon at Morris practice... as was his unfair jibe 'Call yourselves a Morris side?' because some people didn't immediately take to the floor for the first dance upon arrival. The word used was 'abrasive'... As for our under-18 side, the only one who wasn't was Chris, substituting for her genuine under-18 daughter (Dad is the concertina player, and her elder sister was in the set) who had been taken ill that afternoon. She was gutted to have missed out! We're so proud of them! I don't know if you noticed Chris's clone, Shirley...? When they both dance in the same set they cause mayhem! Talking of calling at weddings... I did one a few months ago where we got a set of eight up for one dance, which included the bride and groom, then spent the remainder of the time playing tunes. Mind you, we were doing an hour in-between disco sessions. Had I known we wouldn't have accepted the booking... |

Subject: RE: Time Bandits Ceilidh 9 Feb 2008 Earl of Stamford From: Mo the caller Date: 11 Feb 08 - 07:33 AM The floor seemed to fill quick enough to me (he obviously doesn't call at weddings!). We did need a rest now and then, we're not all under 18 like most of your excellent dance team seemed to be. (Or is it just the "younger policemen effect"?) |

Subject: RE: Time Bandits Ceilidh 9 Feb 2008 Earl of Stamford From: Bernard Date: 10 Feb 08 - 01:06 PM I've just realised the last comment above may not be clear... as an Earl of Stamford's member I was referring to the other ceilidhs we've organised over the past few years in that same hall. We've been doing two a year for about four years, now. On a different tack... as they are primarily a miked-up acoustic band, I was expecting problems in getting sufficient level out of them to get a good balance and enough noise for the dancers at the back of the room to be able to hear adequately. Far from it - I was able to throttle back for most of the evening, just bringing them up in a big crescendo towards the end of the last dance so they could go out with a bang! Unlike most sound men, I don't like working the desk to get as much as possible out of the system! Then again, it's me day job... |

Subject: RE: Time Bandits Ceilidh 9 Feb 2008 Earl of Stamford From: Bernard Date: 10 Feb 08 - 12:47 PM Hah! Watch this space...! I recorded everything last night (except the caller!!), and most of it turned out well enough. Trouble was, to get a 'stereo' recording I had to take the outputs from the two monitor channels (which weren't in use), and there was no way of seeing the levels, so the first couple of dances had some 'clipping'. The rest were okay, because I was able to concentrate more on the recording once the live stuff had settled down. I've suggested taking my multitrack next time, so I can record each instrument channel separately. If nothing else, they can use the recordings as a guide to what's needed for a studio recording for dancing. It was odd hearing the caller complaining about dancers being slow to take to the floor - after every other ceilidh we've done the caller has commented on what a joy it was to get dancers on the floor so quickly... |

Subject: RE: Time Bandits Ceilidh 9 Feb 2008 Earl of Stamford From: Mo the caller Date: 10 Feb 08 - 12:07 PM I've already got their CD, but if they brought out a CD of dance-length tracks I would buy and use it. |

Subject: RE: Time Bandits Ceilidh 9 Feb 2008 Earl of Stamford From: Mo the caller Date: 10 Feb 08 - 12:05 PM Wow, they are even better to dance to than listen to (though it was nice to take a rest from the slave-driving caller to listen now and then). Good programme of dances too. |

Subject: RE: Time Bandits Ceilidh 9 Feb 2008 Earl of Stamford From: Mo the caller Date: 08 Feb 08 - 07:00 AM Thanks, that very clear. Now all I have to do is avoid the A54/556 roadworks to get onto the A49! Looking forward to it. |

Subject: RE: Time Bandits Ceilidh 9 Feb 2008 Earl of Stamford From: Bernard Date: 07 Feb 08 - 02:18 PM The Old Orchard address is, in fact, the Hall Secretary's home address - not much point in going there, even though it's only around the corner. If you're on the A559 (J10 M56) and can find the Antrobus Arms, turn down Wheatsheaf Lane, down the side of the pub. At the next junction turn RIGHT into Knutsford Road and drive until you see the hall on your right, on the corner of School Lane. The entrance is actually from Knutsford Road... PM me for my mobile number if you think you'll need it. |

Subject: RE: Time Bandits Ceilidh 9 Feb 2008 Earl of Stamford From: Bernard Date: 19 Jan 08 - 07:10 PM Sorry, Mo, it seems that the email address is temporarily not working for some reason. It's probably because we occasionally re-map the addresses when someone goes on holiday, but the people who usually get the re-mapping... have gone on holiday! So maybe it didn't get switched back last time. Confused?! Hah! ;o) Fortunately, there is an alternative which I know is correctly mapped, 'cos I look after it! secretaryATearlofstamford.co.uk Alternatively, PM me with your email address, and I'll pass it on to Sheila. |

Subject: RE: Time Bandits Ceilidh 9 Feb 2008 Earl of Stamford From: Bernard Date: 19 Jan 08 - 09:30 AM Yes, there's a bar! Yes, it was a silly question! As for the lack of reply, I'll try to find out why! Maybe Sheila's been away for a couple of days, or her PC is on the blink again. She would normally reply 'by return'. |

Subject: RE: Time Bandits Ceilidh 9 Feb 2008 Earl of Stamford From: Mo the caller Date: 16 Jan 08 - 07:03 AM Am I right that Antrobus has a bar? Silly question, it's a morris do! I did email for tickets, no reply, I'm assuming I've reserved 2. If someone was bringing some to Frodsham this Sat they could relieve me of some cash. |

Subject: RE: Time Bandits Ceilidh From: Bernard Date: 15 Jan 08 - 06:24 PM As 'Chief Musician' for EoS I can heartily recommend this ceilidh!! ;o) The Time Bandits are also favourites of mine, so I'm delighted that they've asked me to look after the sound for them! I'm not sure why it's not on our website - except that Mike's recently had a hip op and may not be in a position to do it...! Anyway, the venue is Antrobus Village Hall (O/S ref. SJ 64258 79682), we start at 7:30pm, tickets are £8.00, and supper is included. Tickets may be available on the door, but it's better to book your tickets in advance, as we can only allow 100 in the room - any more, and it's too uncomfortable!
