Subject: RE: Anything happening in London 13-17 March From: treewind Date: 11 Mar 08 - 04:27 PM There is definitely a session (mostly English and instrumental) at Clerkenwell on the 16th - we've had the usual invites from Alex, Sheena &co.... unfortunately we won't be able to make it (yet again) as we'll be on our way home from N. Yorkshire. I'm absolutely certain that the Folk London listing for the Horseshoe session 16th has got the wrong horseshoe. The Borough one is, as previously mentioned, always on the 1st Sunday. Subject: RE: Anything happening in London 13-17 March From: The Borchester Echo Date: 11 Mar 08 - 03:51 PM Folk London Look up the March listings for yourselves. Or speak to Messrs Nail & Szyszkowski on Thursday. And see the May listings once the page is updated. |

Subject: RE: Anything happening in London 13-17 March From: GUEST,Peter Date: 11 Mar 08 - 03:39 PM I don't have a Folk London to hand but I'm sure that the Horseshoe entry must be a typo for Clerkenwell. Martin Nail is easy enough to contact if anybody needs clarification. |

Subject: RE: Anything happening in London 13-17 March From: GUEST,Regl'r Date: 11 Mar 08 - 08:47 AM Wesley-good advice from LTS,although searching on Folk London mentioned above should get you started. Belgravia's ok-central London despite sounding like central Europe. You can be Sloane(rather than Texas)Rangers for a few days. Reg. |

Subject: RE: Anything happening in London 13-17 March From: Wesley S Date: 10 Mar 08 - 03:17 PM If anyone has similar information about music to be heard in London from May 17th through the 24th I'd love to hear about it. The Mrs and I will be traveling from Texas to London on those dates. We'll be staying in the Belgravia{?} section of town. Or if there are any websites we can visit between now and then please pass them on. And sorry to say I don't know the names of any of the local singers. Thanks y'all. |

Subject: RE: Anything happening in London 13-17 March From: Big Al Whittle Date: 10 Mar 08 - 03:09 PM Ron Kavana used to do a good version of the Wild Rover also. Is he still around. I haven't seen him mentioned for a while. |

Subject: RE: Anything happening in London 13-17 March From: Brian Peters Date: 10 Mar 08 - 02:14 PM Margery - Just occurred to me that my scary story above might be offputting to a visitor. Rest assured, what happened was several years ago, partly my fault, and I've ridden tube trains a thousand times without incident. |

Subject: RE: Anything happening in London 13-17 March From: The Borchester Echo Date: 10 Mar 08 - 08:39 AM I was talking about the Borough Horseshoe session which is listed (unusally) as taking place on the 16th this month. It is also true that the Clerkenwell one (venue for Islington Folk Club) also has/had? Sunday sessions. Anyone turning up for the Askews on the Thursday club night will undoubtedly find both Martin and Alex in attendance and can thus decide what to do on Sunday. |

Subject: RE: Anything happening in London 13-17 March From: severed-head Date: 10 Mar 08 - 08:29 AM The other Horseshoe??? I think the session mentioned in Folk London should refer to the session at The Horseshoe 24 Clerkenwell Close, London, EC1R 0AG organised by Alex Szyszkowski which is on Sunday 16th March from about Midday. Subject: RE: Anything happening in London 13-17 March From: Brian Peters Date: 10 Mar 08 - 07:54 AM Personally I love all those more reflective versions of 'Wild Rover', but I too was a table-banger in my younger days and wouldn't want to be too precious about it. Arthur Smith (the comic) was on Radio 4 on Saturday morning extolling the virtues of the song and, in particular, those four bangs - which he described as a tradition in their own right. The provenance of the 'Irish' Wild Rover is rather murky, and it's ironic that a song about giving up the high life should somehow become a drinking song. Nevertheless, you could argue that, having spawned several parodies and football chants, and being widely recognized by the public at large, it's more of a 'folk song' than any of those authentic versions collected in England a hundred years ago. But that discussion really belongs in the 'Folk Process' thread. Meanwhile I'm looking forward to seeing the bright lights of London again, and hoping no-one pulls a knife on me in the tube this time. |

Subject: RE: Anything happening in London 13-17 March From: Sarah the flute Date: 09 Mar 08 - 03:43 PM The Greenwich Borough Hall gig starts at 7.30pm until 11pm ....not the afternoon...sorry table bangers! Sarah |

Subject: RE: Anything happening in London 13-17 March From: The Borchester Echo Date: 09 Mar 08 - 03:23 PM I shouldn't worry, Brian. Any Irish Table Bangers can get it out of their systems at Greenwich Borough Hall on Sunday afternoon before trekking up to Walthamstow. It's interesting that so many civilised variants of The Wild Rover are getting revived. What Brian does is lovely, as are ones from Andy Turner and Jim Causley. More power to the campaign to rescue songs from the bang & thump brigade. |

I hope Margery makes it along to MT or Walthamstow. |

Subject: Anything happening in London 13-17 March From: jacqui.c Date: 08 Mar 08 - 10:11 AM I got the following from a friend of Bat Goddess's:- "Hi Jacqui-- As Linn Schulz mentioned, she suggested I email you regarding traditional music in London; sd. you go over frequently. I'll be arriving 13 March and leaving on Monday the 17th. I'll be staying pretty centrally, Hyde Park Radnor near Paddington, so tube access should be easy for me. Haven't looked at buses, but not sure how late I'd be out. I'm not a musician, just enjoy it. Looking at listings on the Web, I see a tiny place in Soho (?) that has Waterson Carthy on Friday and the Askew Sisters performing somewhere, and a few sessions that seem to be out a bit. Do you know of any regular sessions that are at all central? Any other advice? I've been to London a couple of times now with my husband, but we've been early to bed, and I thought I might try something different." She won't be there for Sharpes and I don't know what else might be going on in that time frame. Anyone got any useful info? |
