Subject: RE: Obit: Lionel Stanley RIP (Dewsbury, 3 April 20 From: GUEST,Simon Chapman Date: 29 Apr 08 - 06:31 PM I was taught IT by Dr Stanley at Bruntcliffe High School between 94 and 97 he was a loud and unforgiving sarcastic old sod at times, apparently he mellowed after our year! 99% knew he was a nice chap and upon hearing the news this evening from a friend I was shocked. I cant believe old Doc Stanley is gone and I feel rather sad. We used to laugh at his Cardigans (out of earshot) and call him Papa Smurf, and I even once drew a Caricature of him which he confiscated and secretly scanned in becaude he liked it hahaha he even gave one of my best mates his nickname which we still use today. I won't forget you Doc Stanley |

Subject: RE: Obit: Lionel Stanley RIP (Dewsbury, 3 April 2008) From: GUEST,Pearl O'Neill Date: 11 Apr 08 - 04:49 AM Oh what a shock we have just found this thread. We hope as Ray's comment above that Brian Rogers has been informed, unfortunately I cannot find Brian's email. Lionel was indeed a quiet person, although when he smiled the room seemed to light up. We had the pleasure of staying with him whilst visiting the Bag O Shoddy many years ago. However during the recent years we always used to meet up with him, Arthur & Brian at the Big Sing in Chippenham. He was also a regular in the audience on the front row at our Folk Club on Friday & Saturday Nights. We and the folk world will miss him, Pearl & The Admiral |

Subject: RE: Obit: Lionel Stanley RIP (Dewsbury, 3 April 2008) From: GUEST,Anne Date: 10 Apr 08 - 03:20 AM Lionel had a great send-off,his 'folkie' friends gathered after the service and went in convoy to The Black Bull at Birstall, where we proceeded to have a real good sing for him. Many friends old and new were there, and we shared lots of memories and laughs from various times in his folk life,he would have enjoyed the music if not the fuss! Sleep peacefully,Lionel. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Lionel Stanley RIP (Dewsbury, 3 April 2008) From: Shantyfreak Date: 08 Apr 08 - 07:03 AM I too knew Lionel thru' the Shoddy and came to like and respect him. His taciturnity was legendary at the club where I dubbed him the "unsung" hero. Speaking in very short phrases and rarely seeming to smile. I knew I had been accepted when I started to recieve the loquacious greeting of "na' then Kidder". Despite his restrained surface appearance we all knew that Lionel enjoyed and appreciated good music especially the sing arounds both at the Shoddy and at numerous festivals; and his quiet presence will be sadly missed by all of us who knew him. Subject: RE: Obit: Lionel Stanley RIP (Dewsbury, 3 April 2008) From: Zany Mouse Date: 06 Apr 08 - 01:36 PM A very sad loss. I knew him many years ago and a kinder gentleman you could not wish to meet. He did in fact have a very keen sense if humour -it was just very dry. Heaven Folk Club gains another goodie. Rhiannon |

Subject: RE: Obit: Lionel Stanley RIP (Dewsbury, 3 April 2008) From: Leraud Date: 06 Apr 08 - 12:56 PM Pat and I are both very shocked and sad to hear about Lionel. He was always very hospitable towards us and we stayed with him a few times. We always thought of him and sent him postcards from wherever we were and although we knew he was ill and hadn't seen him for a couple of years, we didn't realise that he was this ill. I don't know if he had any family or if there is anyone to send messages of condolence to. Does anyone else know? Lynne Heraud |

Subject: RE: Obit: Lionel Stanley RIP (Dewsbury, 3 April 2008) From: GUEST,GUEST Anne Date: 06 Apr 08 - 03:30 AM Lionel was a very private person, but could be drawn from time to time if he knew you well enough-especially when football was involved. He and Barrie have had many 'banters' about the merits of Leeds United and Newcastle United, and on club nights he would sometimes pass little notes across with humorous messages,as the Shoddy was progressing. He was also steeped in traditional music, and very knowledgeable, and very much thought of and well respected by the many artists whom he booked over the years.Since his illness, the number of people who have asked after him and sent their respects is large, and shows how he was well thought of. I hope that many of his friends from the old Shoddy can make it on Wednesday to pay their last respects.Geoff,Mary,Deanna,Barrie and I have done our best to notify all on our lists. We shall miss him very much. Anne and Barrie |

Subject: RE: Obit: Lionel Stanley RIP (Dewsbury, 3 April 2008) From: Derby Ram Date: 05 Apr 08 - 07:00 PM Sylvia Needham here. Liam, I'm afraid it is the same Dr Lionel Stanley who taught ICT at Bruntcliffe and used to organise the barn dances for the PTA. Lionel loved singing, and he could sing himself, but was too shy to do stand up and lead. He also loved dancing, although it sometimes took a couple of pints before he got up enough courage to dance. Although a shy man, and it wasn't easy to get a laugh out of him (Lynn Heraud and Pat Turner being two of the most successful ones), at school he seemed like a different person - he really loved teaching the pupils, joking with them, especially about football. He was a staunch Newcastle United supporter, and at the Shoddy, he would either be in a very good mood (Newcastle having won and Leeds lost), a good mood (Newcastle having won and Leeds either drawing or won), or not such a good mood (Newcastle having lost and Leeds won), or a bad mood (Newcastle having lost to Leeds), as he knew he would get a ribbing at school from his pupils. He will be missed. |

My thourghts will be with all those that can pay their respects, unfortunately I will be at work, my boss is not the kind that will allow me to take time off. |

Subject: RE: Lionel Stanley RIP From: Mary Humphreys Date: 05 Apr 08 - 12:52 PM Anahata and I are very sad to hear the news of Lionel's death. We have not been in the Dewsbury area for a while, so we did not even know he was in hospital. We are unable to get to the funeral unfortunately. Our condolences to his family. Lionel's dedication to keeping the folk club tradition alive in the West Yorkshire area was very much appreciated by us and, I am sure by the many folks who came to his club. He will be sorely missed. Mary Humphreys |

Subject: RE: Lionel Stanley RIP From: nutty Date: 05 Apr 08 - 12:19 PM So sad to hear this. Lionel was a fan of Firm Friends and booked us regularly at the Shoddy. I know that he had been ill for some time but it doesn't make the news any easier. Sorry I can't make the funeral either but I will be thinking of you all. |
