I picked up a DS30 in USA - Not sure how it compares Techy-wise , but its a neat Song Stealer ! AND downloads straight to the puter !

The Olympus LS 10 or LS11 is easily the best quality of these types of devices - both in terms of the mics and the ADDA quality

It does cost about £250 - I use them as back recorders when I am recording classical performances

Unfortunately my Pro Walkman, now 18 years old is just an ornament on the top shelf above me with my Sony D7 - badly in need of a new record drum perched on top!

Yes, I was forgetting the wow, flutter, and other tape-motion irregularities etc. Mind you a couple of recordings I did on my RH1 recently suffered from apparent clipping on one channel only. By a process of elimination, I have found the problem to be in my Sony mic. So for the time being I have reverted to my Sony ECM 909 mic which I bought in 1984!

I just picked up my Pro Walkman, and was reminded how heavy it is!

Tape also tends to suffer from wow, flutter, and other tape-motion irregularities, irregular low end response and inability to cope with high levels at high frequencies, none of which apply to digital recording, especially if you record to uncompressed file format. But you are right that the lack of hiss is by far the most obvious difference if you compare with a good tape recorder - and the Sony Walkman Pro is/was an exceptional tape recorder.

Oddly enough the actual sound quality of the audio is no better than that of a decent cassette recorder - I used a Sony Pro Walkman with TDK AR tape. What is different with a digital recorder is the lack of hiss, provided of course the recording level is not set too low.

If auto record level is used, it always sounds hideous. Many Minidisc recorders suffer from this, or perhaps users just haven't found the hidden manual record level function which has to be preset before the recording is started. I have a Sony RH1 and you can change the record level whilst recording, upload to a PC via Sonicstage and save as a wav file.

The radio station I dj for has Edirols. I use an RO-9 which certainly gives broadcast quality sound.

I did some stuff for a bigger station recently, two of their stations. One guy had a Sony (bit of a posh Edirol he said).

The other had a recorder the size of a DAT machine with a a small card holder that was replaceable in a kind of caddy. Not sure what that was.

I also have a Zoom H2 which I'm happy with and accompanies me most places and have posted various things to other threads on mudcat already. Mine was £135ish but it's obviously significantly more than £40 so budget comes in! I use Reaper or Audacity to tinker with them if I need to. Easy to use. Screen is small and they are quite lightweight in construction but no problem so far - and I have dropped it once just to check if it bounces and it did.

I've got a Zoom H2 - you can get these for around £150, and they're perfect. You can select the quality of the recording from a long menu, from the smallest MP3 to the biggest WAV, it has 4 built in mics, and putting it in the middle of a session gives you superb stereo recordings. I've bought a 16GB SD card for it that'll keep me going through a week of intensive workshops at Sore Fingers Summer School this Easter, and I won't have to miss a note.
I've had a couple of Sony minidisc recorders and a good IRiver recorder, but this is better by far. I edit the files in my PC using GoldWave software (or you can use the fee Audacity).

I just picked up a Tascam DR 1 via eBay. So far, it has proven totally satisfactory. I went in looking for an Edirol but found that everyone seemed to be running the price up massively.

For ease of use I would recommend the Olympus WS110. It plugs directly into the computer to transfer files snd I think the extra cost would be worth it. Having said that I got a great deal on ebay when I bought mine

Mine's probably a bit older/not as good as it's a VN600-PC, but I've found it really useful for recording verse & chorus for tunes & for downloading to PC. Not high quality, but at least I get the tune *grin*

i have one. Mine's a slightly higher spec, I think. It's useful for sessions, or recording talks at festivals, or taking things like oral history recordings. And for sharing - the WAV files are lossless, but convertible to whatever format you need. And iTunes picks them up and converts them automatically.

The great thing is that it's so small, so you can have it with you pretty much all the time.
