Check out this link for information on Art of Field Recording: Volume I : 50 Years of Traditional American Music Documented by Art Rosenbaum. I got the CD box set as a Christmas gift from my son. It's a real treasure.

Also see the Art Rosenbaum Georgia Folklore Collection at the Library of Congress.

I'm sorry to see that this article is not available online. I subscribe, and read that article in the old-fashioned "dead-tree" format just a few days ago. Pretty interesting.

One thing that the printed magazine does NOT provide is the set of sound clips mentioned above; I'll have to check 'em out.

Great article. If you have a local library with magazines, it's worth a trip.

I've listened to the whole interview now - there are number of remarkable musical clips inserted.

Rosenbaum seems to have done some great work.

Check out Art Rosenbaum's book "Folk Visions & Voices: Traditional Music and Song In North Georgia" (U.of Georgia Press 1983). Two companion LPs were issued by Folkways (Folkways FE 31461 & 31462). He did the text, collecting as well as drawings and paintings. Margo Newmark Rosenbaum did the photos.

There's a good discography of traditional Georgia music in it, as well.

Good stuff. Worth seeking out.

The latest New Yorker (28/04/08): "This week in the magazine, Burkhard Bilger writes about the folklorists Art Rosenbaum and Lance Ledbetter and about field recordings of folk music."

The article itself does not seem to be on-line, but there is an audio interview with the author available - I haven't listened to it and I don't know if I'll be able to because of my lame connection, so I can't make any judgement on its content, other than that I suppose some of you might find it of interest.

There's also a link to a "slideshow" on that page; seven photos of some of the subjects of the field recording in Georgia, US.
