Kitty's certainly right about Hammersmith on the gen game - I was playing for them the second time (along with Ian Dedic) and none more surprised than me when the show went out (weeks later) and some of my colleagues said they'd seen it.

Not sure of your point Northumbrian but Morris dancing is amusing. That's not to say it's ridiculous or facile but grown men and women skiping with sticks makes me smile. The best teams show physical stamina and coordination while being in on the 'joke', the worst look so earnest one might believe the summer's crop relies entirely on their routine.
Perhaps a northern soul Morris should show them how it's done?

Chippenham Morris appeared as part of a "fete" on ITV's "The Farm" a couple of years ago. We taught Lional Blair to dance! As well as having Ron Jeremy, Emma Noble and Flava Flav dancing with us!!

Micca - I expect you're right about Hammersmith, but it was the clip of Herga that got shown in the tributes to Larry Grayson (and Myke Bowers who hit LG with his bladder during Queen's Delight).

The actor who played the concertina for the Morris dance on "Dad's Army" was Peter Honri who made only the one appearance in the series - "The Godiva Affair" He was credited as Private Day. He played the concertina in his first London Appearance in 1948 at a music hall and went on to establish a career in Variety, Revues, Pantos and Musicals.
(from "The A-Z of Dad's Army" by Richard Webber, David Croft and Jimmy Perry)

Looking at the episode I think he made a ten second appearance in vision in the background whilst his playing was heard behind Jones and Fraser knocking seven bells out of each other!

Cheers
Mark

Morris dancing, by way of being totally English, and laughable, naturally attracts the media in joking fasion, Monthy Python is not dead, but lives on in this rediculous form.

And many years ago - somewhere around 1980 methinks - Throstles Nest Morris (women's side from Cumbria, now sadly defunct) and Carlisle Morris not only danced on a Noel Edmonds quiz show called 'Lucky Numbers' on BBC 1, but they also participated in the quiz (general knowledge and special subject 'folk music') and won the whole series, being the highest scorers! We won a few hundred quids' worth of fabric for making new kit I think, and a 'brick' ... some sort of weird trophy!

The comedian Stewart Lee tried to get a Morris side to appear in the pilot for a new sketch show he's doing and they refused, despite the sketch not actually ridiculing them, because they said they'd been pilloried too often on British comedy TV shows. This led Stewart (who had Morris dancers at his wedding) to ponder if the whole idea of finding them 'funny' maybe derives from an appearance on a 70s comedy show.
I couldn't think of any specific examples but the Dad's Army they showed this weekend could be a major culprit. Anyone have any specific memories from before then? Maybe a Dick Emery or a Benny Hill?

Two of our storemen in steel toe capped boots with washers on long pieces of thread. Hilarious! Hadn't got a clue what they were doing but really funny. All in good fun.

Kits Coty Morris were in 'Ridgeriders' back in the mid nineties, up at the 'Kits Coty Stones' on the North Downs Way near Maidstone. They said at the end of the ride that the morris dancing was what they enjoyed the most

The biker morris team would probably have been Royal Liberty. They had already been on the Six O'Clock Show (regional magazine), Surprise, Surprise (with Cilla Black), the Tube and several others.

Who was the side which danced on Hale and Pace in the "Heavy Metal Morris Dancer" sketch? I think they are/were London based. Dressed in biker gear.

Along with all the Sheffield sides, our lot danced and took part at the opening ceremony of the World Student Games in 1991. It was televised. (We went in to make up the numbers as they were a side short). There's a wonderful shot of our drummer charging past the ground level camera, across the sports field to get to the first position, with the drum tucked under his arm!

I think Dad's Army had brought in a "proper" musician, as he played Constant Billy.

were in real life a Morris side.

I didn't know a TV was strong enough to have a load of Morris Dancers on top of it. Modern Technology Eh! Must be a bit difficult dancing on top of a flat panel TV.

The Man Who Knew To Little starred the Grand Union Morris plus some members of Aldbury Morris. The music was played by me (on melodeon) and a fiddle player who's name now escapes me. Part of my 15 minutes of fame.

The other part can be found HERE

Once was in Dad's Army and the other in the Bill Murray spy spoof " The Man Who Knew too little" Does anyone know if these were real morris sides and if so from where?
