God, so many small, intimate gigs like the ones you mention, CupOfTea, would be great to have.

For me, it would be a very young Dan Fogelberg playing at a small community college as a solo act when he was just getting going. Astounding show.

Joni Mitchell jumping onstage and singing a couple of songs at a disco club in Boulder where she was dancing up a storm, way back when.

Small community outdoor festivals are great for this, too. I saw Natalie McMaster about ten years ago on a clear, bug free summer night at a festival in Ohio. There were only about a hundred people there. Just magical.

Things I saw that should have been DVDs (because the audiences were so small, and the music and performance were so great)

Once upon a time, in the last century, there was a Folk Alliance Conference in Tucson, Arizona. This was the early days of Folkannoyance conferences, and the whole showcase thing was still shaking down. A batch of promoters & performers of Celtic flavored music put together a showcase with an invite-only audiece of known bookers of that musical genre. A thrill of that night that never made it as a road show was the duo of Johnny Cunningham and John Whelan having at it with great glee. It was Whelan's first FA and he was absolutely everywhere that week, like an energizer bunny with an accordian instead of a drum. Few of us had seen him in action with a crowd, yanking people up on the dance floor while playing, exuding energy

Slightly later in the last century, another Folk Alliance conference, this time in Toronto. Joan Sherman had gotten several acts to put on a show together in high hilarity. I think it was called "One, Two, Three, everything but the plot.." and featured Les Barker, Lou & Peter Berryman and Artisan. It was omylordi'mgoingtopeemypants funny. I think they actually got booked only one place, somewhere in Michigan, and didn't have a chance to see anything but the showcase of it in Toronto.

I sort of agree Liz, and know exactly what you mean.

shakespeare on video always reminds me of that. Why try to imagine 'the vast fields of France', when you could put a video insert of the same showing the fields in question?

However it would be nice to have some of those moments back, or a decent reminder of them - times when you thought, that piece of music was wonderful.

Music DVDs don't really do it for me... the experience of the concert is unique and even when watching a vid of a concert I attended, it just isn't the same.

Still, if I must....

Roy Bailey and Tony Benn doing their 'Writing on the Wall' series. Not exclusively musical, but full of interesting facts, great songs and a firm favourite of mine... if only my cassettes weren't stretching out beyond redemption.

Under One Sky at Cambridge last year. The performance was spoiled for me by a bunch of drunken idiots shouting and screaming behind me.

For me it would be 'The Ship' Bill Brydon play featuring John Tams and Phil Cunningham amongst many others - filmed by the BBC (I think) in Glasgow. My friend has a video of it which he keeps promising to find but never gets round to.

Otherwise Home Service and Albion Dance Band would be good

All the ones who have retired to the great music pub up above (or maybe down below), like Alex Campbell, Cyril Tawney, Tony Rose, Tony Cuffe, Davy Steele, Derek Moffat - too many to mention. Fortunately, there is footage of Lal Waterson and Hamish Imlach. Who else? Did the Spinners ever make a video?

I was thinking how I would love to see George Shearing accompanying Mel Torme again. They were very sympatico, almost symbiotic.....

Was there a dvd, I can't see one on the web?
