The songs called the "Emma", Charlie, sorry we had to leave a bit early & miss it, it's one of my favorites that Joanne does & she does it well.
Brett, it was great to see & hear you again, I just finished your article & sidebar, real nice you've sold me on ocean going sailing canoes, see you in Guam.

Barry

Well, I just got back from a very full day and I'm pleasantly fried.

Let's see, we managed to get Brett up at 8:30 and stuffed with French toast and out the door by 9:30 so that we could help my mother pack up her trade goods for the Arts & Crafts Fair on my home island of Georgetown. We got there and got her booth all set up; she sold practically everything except for her oil paintings but was quite pleased. I helped Alison Freeman set up the sound for the musical entertainment and we did several songs together throughout the afternoon, in between the sets of various other musicians. At one point Alison did "The Cat Came Back" in honor of a childrens book my mother had published and I was able to respond with "The Body in the Bag." Midafternoon the sky opened up and poured down but much of everything was covered by tents and the fair went on.

At 4 pm we packed everything up and then I met Alison at the Maine Maritime Museum to set up the concert for Bob Webb and Dave Peloquin. It was a fine concert. Only 40 people showed up but they were all willing to sing and Bob and Dave were in great form.

So that's why I'm feeling a bit fried right now.

The Press Room session was a fine time as well, despite the World War 1 air conditioner. I triedout one new song, "From Auckland to the Bluff" by Rudy Sunde from New Zealand; it seemed to go over well. I also did "West Indies Blues," "Sea Traders", "Fire Marengo," and "Bound Away" by Bill Adams.

What was the title of the new song that Joanne led, from the same folks from Western Australia who composed "Don't Sail on the Emma"?

It was really nice to have Paul and Charleen in attendance and I'm pleased that we got to chat with them at the Flat Bread after the session, despite the deluge. It was really outrageous when we first went out in the street but it settled down to a more quiet drizzle later.

Best sign off

Great weekend! It was so wonderful to get to the Press Room and see all those who could get there. Most of those who did get there got a copy of Guahan Magazine featuring the article I wrote on the canoes of Guam. It was a lovely evening though my voice was all sung out and talked out by the end of the evening.

Today we helped Charlie's mother set up at an outdoor art festival in Georgetown. I also got to meet another old friend there and her new husband. I'm glad things are going well for her.

Now I am back in New Limerick at my parent's house. I brought them some lobsters and we wolfed them down for supper. Yummy!

Thanks to all who came out to sing fior and with me and the others. I love those evenings at the Press Room. It was great to see Linn and Tom, Mary, Barry and Justine, Dave, Tyler, the Adventure crew, and to meet Paul and Charlene. Thanks to Charley for making it possible for me to get there. I hope you didn't get too wet after I left. I drove through the rain until I was well north of Bangor.

Wonderful session - great to see Barry and Justine! And lots of wonderful songs - many of which I could actually hear over the aforementioned air conditioner. It is true we might have melted without it - and weather this hot isn't that common in New England.

Brett and Charley headed out early this morning, off to a craft fair where Charley was performing, then who knows where (well, I know where Charley's supposed to be sometime tonight...). There may be more of an update once they return to their respective computers!

Teleportation would be grand! (Hmm...party at Brett & Wakana's!!!)

Great to see Brett again -- wish we'd had more time to talk. And I didn't get to talk to Tyler Buck at ALL (and hadn't seen her in ages).

Lovely, too, to have Paul and Charlene at the sessions (they come for the weekend, so get to the weekly Friday session, too). Paul's enthusiastic singing (and really nice repertoire!) is obvious, but most of you couldn't hear Charlene's great harmonies. (I could and it's a treat!)

There really seemed to be way more background noise than usual -- even taking the Sopwith Camel (air conditioner) into consideration. The A/C is white noise and blots out a whole range of tones -- but not enough of the loud talking in the background, breaking glassware, etc. But, hey, it's a pub on what turned out to be a rainy afternoon and tourists who didn't expect a music session came in for lunch and a pint, etc. And SOME of them really appreciated what they found and stayed to say how much they enjoyed the singing.

Linn

We got home to find the power was out. While I was calling the electric co., it came back on.

It was a small but fine session. The main drwback was the noise caused by the necessary air conditioning system.

The coupel that you met were Paul and Charlene Schurr from Albany who discovered us at last year's Maritime Festival, and who have made the long trek a few time since.

Why can't we teleport?

Just back. I bailed out on the pizza party afterwards when I saw Noah's ark float by. My kitties were outside.
Freddy showed his annoyance by leaping in front of my car a few houses down from my driveway. I nearly hit the little bastard,

Anyway, it was a treat to see Brett even if only for a little while. He is travelling with a Martin that looks like a toy but plays like the real thing.I missed "Sally, Free and Easy" but heard Haul Awa' and The Punch and Judy song.I wish Guam was closer.

It was a great night for music. Peter and Joann showed up late, Joann did a version of Black Jack that I had never heard. Good one. There were some new people (at least new to me) including a couple from Albany and a Mudcatter named Tyler with a very sweet gentle voice.Linn and Tom, Charlie and Judy, and at least 6 more. Good crowd; good music. And we sang a farewell to Sweet Minerva,

I won't make it today.

The antibiotics seem to have cleared the Lyme disease, my doctor thinks, but the antibodies are still in my bloodstream and leaving me worn out from even a little effort.

Since I need to be fit for August I'm going to be taking it very easy for a while yet.

Sorry to miss you Brett.

To clarify Brett's message above (this evening, this afternoon), our intention is to be at the Press Room 3:30 pm sharp. Now all I have to do is herd Brett and Judy into the van with the appropriate lead-time to achieve that, and the one or two side-trips that Brett and Judy have suggested. We probably should be leaving the house in the next 5 minutes!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Hi guys. I am at Charley's house. I will be there this evening. It will be great to see you all. Barry, could you bring a copy of your latest Finn & Haddie CD? I'd like to buy a copy. Charley showed it to me. It looks good.

I will bring along my photo album so you can all see what life is like in Guam. It's a little big so I better put some markers in it to indicate parts of interest. AND I put in pictures of my granddaughter yesterday.

See you this afternoon.

Paul Schurr IS addicted! We got him hooked but good at last year's Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival -- and he singlehandedly added a lot of enthusiasm and great singing to the festivities!

He and his wife were at the sessions in February or March -- before I could drive again, at least. It'll be great to have them back. (And I can show off my renewed arm mobility, etc. to Charlene who suffered a similar affliction a year before me.)

There are some other friends I haven't met yet showing up, too, along with a former co-worker of mine (who also escaped the job from hell).

Linn

Brett-

You just take the worm hole to Richmond and there your chariot awaits.

Paul did a fine job leading shanties at the late night sessions at Mystic; he could be addicted!

Judy and I should be there, and Dick Dufresne is trying to rearrange his schedule. Nor and Eli are both in Ireland (where Nor is currently wrapping things up) or they would be there too.

Will we be seeing the Gloucester crowd?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

The monthly shanty/forebitter/ballad session will be taking place this Saturday, 19 July at the Press Room, Portsmouth NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.

This should be a bully session with special guests, Paul Schurr & co. from far Albany and Brett Burnham, aka, Naemanson, from further Guam.

This should also provide an opportunity to compare set lists for the upcoming Portland Maritime Festival.

Hope to see lots of you there -- Tom
