I was lucky enough to sit in on the first read through for this new work on Monday and it's going to be a really special production.

Seeing Mike lead a cast in singing one of the new songs was a real privilege.

It runs from 16th October through to 8th November here at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, and I'm sure if you can get up north you won't be disappointed!

All the best,

Kate.

Hi Ruth, Surreysinger,

Mike will not be appearing in the production, however he will be performing with Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy at the Stephen Joseph Theatre on Sunday the 2nd of November. Jack Lear Saturday, Mike, Norma and Martin Sunday... sounds like a lovely weekend away to me!

Kate.

Well he's not shown in the cast list Ruth (not that that necessarily means anything of course)

Mike Waterson has written original songs and music for the forthcoming Stephen Joseph Theatre Company production of Jack Lear.

Written by Ben Benison and directed by and starring Barrie Rutter, Jack Lear is a gritty reworking of Shakespeare's King Lear.

Jack is old, tired and finally hanging up his oilskins and sou'wester. At last he is divinding up his 'kingdom' to his feisty and unforgiving daughters, Morgana, Freda and Victoria. Years of being raised in hard graft amongst fish guts, leering trawler men and all that is coarse and masculine has made each one long for femininity and freedom from the heavy burden of their father's penny pinching ways.

As Jack looks towards a retirement of rest and putting his boots up, his daughters have other ideas in mind as their resentment rises and surges with the tide.

A good excuse for an autumn visit to Scarborough! Tickets from the box office: 01723 370541 or the website
