Subject: RE: looking for books From: GUEST,John in Brisbane Date: 14 Dec 00 - 07:02 AM Yes Joe I guess that I appreciate that I didn't live the US experiences in Hard Hitting Songs, but I also felt that there wasn't too much new in it that I hadn't already seen in other Oak Publications, albeit between different covers. Regards, John |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Dec 00 - 01:34 AM Yeah, John - I think of Hard-Hitting Songs for Hard-Hit People (1967) as kind of the ultimate American activist songbook of the 20th century. I don't thing people from other countries can easily appreciate this sort of song - you have to have more than a tourist's knowledge of a country to be able to understand a nation's activists. There's another book that might be of more interest to you, Songs of Work and Protest, by Edith Fowke and Joe Glazer - the songs in this book ar a little less topical and a little more "timeless." It's available from Dover as a paperback reprint. Thanks for thinking of me with the Lingenfelter book, John. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: looking for books From: GUEST,John in Brisbane Date: 13 Dec 00 - 07:21 AM Joe, I picked up a copy for you last week of the Lingenfelter book, but it can sit quite proudly on my shelf. I'll keep am eye out for the other. I've just recently combed through 'Best Loved' and 'Hard Hitting' for missing tunes. I actually found 'Hard Hitting' somewhat of a disappointment in terms of its utility as a reference source, but I'm sure that you view it through different eyes - and I'm not American just yet. Cheers, John |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Dec 00 - 02:10 AM John, I looked for Songs of the American West, by Lingenfelter/Dwyer, for over a year. There was a copy availabel through http://www.bookfinder.com for something like $250. I finally found one for $30 from another Bookfinder merchant. It's a great book - well worth the thirty bucks. There are now quite a few copies available through Bookfinder in the $30-$40 range. It covers all the West, but I haven't found a betterbook for the songs of California. What I'm looking for now is Songs the Whalemen Sang, by Gale Huntington - $75 at Bookfinder, which is too rich for my taste. I'm also looking to supplement my limited collection of Canadian songbooks. Dover Press has reissued two Lomax songbooks, American Ballads and Folk Songs (1934) and Our Singing Country (1941). I suppose they have to wait until the price goes down on the rights to Cowboy Songs (1910, 1938), Best Loved American Folk Songs (1947 - also known as Folk Song USA), and The Folk Songs of North America (1960). The University of Nebraska Press just reissued Hard-Hitting Songs for Hard-Hit People (A. Lomax, W. Guthrie, P.Seeger, 1967). -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: SINSULL Date: 12 Dec 00 - 08:26 AM Both show up on Ebay. If you have questions about the condition, edition, etc. email the seller. I have found some treasures there. |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: mkebenn Date: 12 Dec 00 - 08:20 AM How could Lomax's book be out of print? What, we as a people don't care anymore. I've treasured my copy for 30yrs, priceless. Mike Bennett |

Subject: RE: looking for books From: Sandy Paton Date: 11 Jun 99 - 12:53 AM As an aside: someone named John Harris with an e-mail address that included the word "boeing" (living in Seattle?) got a copy of a reprint edition of Joanna Colcord's Songs of American Sailormen, for a very nice $6 on eBay tonight. I probably should have bid on that one, too. Sandy (severely addicted) |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: Sandy Paton Date: 11 Jun 99 - 12:48 AM Hey, y'all: Just go to BookFinder and look for Alan Lomax: Folk Songs of North America. You'll find a dozen copies ranging in price from an outrageous $60 to $17.50. This isn't a "hard to find" item. But be sure to separate "Folk" from "Songs," or the little ol' searcher will come up empty. After the more reasonably priced items are gobbled up, let me know if I still have to part with one or two of mine. Sandy |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: Bill D Date: 10 Jun 99 - 10:43 PM hmmm...seems like I've seen Lomax on shelves 6-8 times in recent years in book tores 'round here...(Wash DC)..had no idea they were getting hard to find...mebbe I'll start grabbin' 'em.. |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: Sandy Paton Date: 10 Jun 99 - 10:11 PM Frank from Toledo (Oregon) also called about my extra Lomax books. Let me pull 'em from the shelves and get back to you. Good for you, rich r. I almost bid on it myself, although Caroline would have throttled me for going after another copy! She has little patience with addictions. Sandy |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: rich r Date: 10 Jun 99 - 09:51 PM Indeed, there was a copy of "Folk Songs of North merica" on ebay recently. It now resides on my bookshelf , he says with overbearing smugness. rich r |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: Banjoman_CO Date: 09 Jun 99 - 07:05 PM Sandy: You said that you could be tempted to part with one of your Lomaxes. How much would it take to tempt you? You can email me at fwafbc38@ria.net Thanks a lot Fred Allen |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: Tiger Date: 09 Jun 99 - 12:45 PM A terrific source for used books is: http://www.bibliofind.com/ Usually multiple listings for any title. Also has pretty good wildcard searching, if you're not sure of the name. |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: Sandy Paton Date: 08 Jun 99 - 11:55 PM I saw a copy of Lomax's Folksongs of North America listed on eBay auctions the other night. I think it was in the history section, not in music books, so it would have been easy to overlook. I'm afraid it's too late now, but the used book sites mentioned earlier in this thread should work for you. Bookfinder only goes 25 books deep, so it may be wise to try the individual sites they list (Bibliocity, Bibliofind, Powell's, ABE, etc.) as well. I've found books listed by, for example, Ray Boas, Bookseller, on his own web site that didn't turn up when I looked for them on Bookfinder. If you fail to locate a good copy of Lomax, I have several, including one of the paperback editions. I could be tempted to part with one. Reach me via the personal message thingy up there at the top of the page. Sandy |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: harpgirl Date: 08 Jun 99 - 11:08 PM I just bought the Alan Lomax book in a bookstore in Micanopy Florida. He has a wonderful collection of music books including shelves on ballads and folksongs; it for twenty five bucks! and believe me it was difficult to get my nymphs to drag them all into Micanopy! harpgirl |

Subject: RE: looking for books From: Charlie Baum Date: 08 Jun 99 - 10:42 PM www.bookfinder.com is a search engine that will search several sources, including both powell's and abebooks. For that reason, it's probably the most inclusive search for books of this nature. Everytime I've tried to search used books at Barnes&Noble, their inefficient search engine crashes my computer, so I've stopped looking there. In the past couple of months, I've found and purchased several out-of-print folk music books through www.bookfinder.com. When you find a book you want, in a condition you'll accept, at a price you're willing to pay, you fill out a form with your request and it's e-mailed to any one of thousands of booksellers around the country. You'll get an immediate note that your e-mail went through, and then, in a day or so, you'll get another e-mail from the bookseller. They'll put the book on hold while you send them a check (or you can usually e-mail them credit card info, if you prefer), and then they mail it to you. And I've had some wonderful cyberchats with booksellers all over the U.S. The present location of the book you want is irrelevant, since the post office delivers from anywhere; so my booksellers have sometimes lived in exotic out-of-the-way locales I've only dreamed of. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: Uilleand Date: 08 Jun 99 - 12:34 PM Try www.abebooks.com I have found every possible listing of out-of-print books there. The ones you mentioned are listed. It's a website where used book stores from across the country list their inventory. They will also notify you by e-mail when new listings of the book in question are added. I have ordered books there from as far away as Alaska. I have also won a bet when I found a book there that someone thought for sure was unobtainable. They had 10 copies listed. They'll also list what condition the books are in, price, contact, first editions, signed copies, etc. |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: Rosebrook Date: 08 Jun 99 - 10:25 AM Banjoman, Another on-line resource I used is Powell's Books (physically located in Portland, OR), where I found the following listing for you: A folksinger's guide to chords and tunings. by Sliverman, Jerry Published by New York,Oak Publications[c1967] (0825600618, 1967) Section: Music-Sheet Music In Stock: 1 at $5.95 Trade paper; Used - Standard Condition; Location: Beaverton The URL for Powell's is: http://www.powells.portland.or.us/ Hope you can snag it! Subject: RE: looking for books From: Susan A-R Date: 07 Jun 99 - 10:11 PM I know that I've seen it here in Central Vermont at The Country Bookshop, which does used books, specializing in folk. I'm sure Ben ships stuff and is a great guy. Just check through information, area code 892 and ask for the country bookshop in Plainfield VT. If you are ever east, it's a great browse, and has also been the site of some wonderful singing and Irish music sessions. Susan |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: Alice Date: 07 Jun 99 - 08:49 PM Banjoman, Folk Songs of North America is in many public libraries. If you can't find one to buy, you can find it at the library to check out (inter-library loan, if necessary). alice in montana |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 07 Jun 99 - 08:25 PM Banjoman CO, Both books are out-of-print as confirmed by Amazon.com. So try those used book threads Joe suggested. Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: looking for books From: Joe Offer Date: 07 Jun 99 - 07:54 PM I think both books are out of print, Fred, but they're readily available. Try a used-book source like www.bookfinder.com. Come to think of it, the Silverman book may still be available. If you use the "help the Mudcat" link on this page, you can get to Amazon and Barnes & Noble. If you buy, Mudcat gets a contribution from the merchant. The used-book service of Barnes & Noble has prices that are way high. You should be able to get the Lomax book for $25. I got mine online for $22, and then found a better one at a store near home for $12.50. I gave the $22 one away. Come to think of it, I've been thinking of starting a book search thread. I'm looking for "Songs of the American West" by Lingenfelter & Dwyer; and "Long Steel Rail," by Cohen. Can anybody help Fred or me? -Joe Offer (click to e-mail)- |
